looking for ideas for a game competition

and slightly off topic, but the lack of percentage scoring is the one thing that really bugged me about the gameshow starcade. -
looking for ideas for a game competition
chrisbid replied to Cynicaster's topic in Classic Console Discussion
if somebody is going to totally suck, you cannot completely make up for that handicap that said how about a two tier system. once you determine the 8 games, every participant fills out a questionaire and answers which of the 8 games they have previously played. for each game, there will be two pools of contestants. the experienced and inexperienced each pool will compete separately. the top score of the experienced players will receive 1000 points, and the top score of the inexperienced players will recieve 1000 points. This way, a low score in the inexerperienced group will theoretically get a higher score than they wouldve gotten had they been in the experienced pool. -

im running an event in june, and will score it similarly (score out of 100 rather than 1000) instead of trying to handicap scores, why not toss out the worst 2 scores out of the 8 games. -

F#Ck Ebay Lets MAke Gamegavel a viable option
chrisbid replied to atari181's topic in Classic Console Discussion
ive found some decent deals on game gavel. obviously the selection isnt going to be as good as ebay, but if you are not looking for a specific title, its a nice little site to browse through. however, i do agree that the layout is terrible. i posted on their facebook about how cluttered their forums were, and the owner simply disagreed. youre going to get that with one man operations. -
but what exactly ramps up in advanced?

the wii was an attempt to expand the dying video game market, as catering to the core market was a losing business model for the gamecube. wii sports showed there was still a huge demand for video games beyond the idiotic-teenage-xbox-live-corpse-humping-"hardcore" market. motion controls are not what sold wii sports (which was the primary driver for wii sales), it was the fact that the game was extremely fun. then a throwaway 2D mario game blew up the sale charts and showed people still wanted to play super mario bros (after a nearly 20 year absence). and yet, where have the followups been? nintendo keeps trying to push 3D mario games on us, despite none of the 3D games selling as well as their 2D originals. instead of trying to make 3D "more accessable", how about giving the public what they actually want and go back to making 2D mario games. we get zelda games that are more about dumb puzzles, stupid fishing mini-games and convoluted storylines rather than the swordplay of the 8 and 16 bit days. and speaking of convoluted stories... check out the new metroid game. i wanted the wii to succeed because i wanted gaming to return to the NES era. Nintendo knew this was a winning strategy in their minds (with all the talk about the blue ocean strategy), but they failed to convince their hearts. a more expensive "WiiHD" will be giving into to their hearts for nintendo to be a company that produces cool technology rather than fun games. the lackluster 3DS launch is showing what the game playing public actually feels about an impressive piece of technology that doesn't really have any new games to play. check out this video nintendo would rather be apple, than continue to be nintendo. and if they want to continue to take that route, good riddance. i have over 4000 video games from the past 40 years to occupy my time.

a couple of questions my 7800 is in Longhorn's shop awating an s-video mod, so i am currently without a system to find out the answers for myself. so here is the deal, in june i will be hosting a small video game competition. one of the games suggested was food fight for the 7800. obviously, its a great pick. it is probably the best 7800 (near) exclusive, and its a game that a player new to the game could pick up and play right away. but there is a problem, with 15 other games on the docket, i want to keep the average play time on every game on the shorter side. I am afraid of a ringer coming in and marathoning the game for half an hour or more. so my question is when you select a higher difficulty (Advanced and Expert), what actually increases? more chefs in the early rounds? higher speeds? youtube videos seem to be set exclusively to intermediate is there a suggested difficulty and beginning stage that would allow for shorter average game times and allow beginners to not be slaughtered on the first stage?

sounds like the final nail in nintendos coffin.

the definition of a killer app is a piece of software that drives hardware sales. seeing how lackluster 3DS sales are at the moment, id say there is no current killer app, and there wont likely be one until nintendo produces a classic 2D mario game.

lamest? making that claim shows a present-time bias. id say the psp had a similar flop of a launch.

Local classic gaming store part 2.
chrisbid replied to HatefulGravey's topic in Classic Console Discussion
you cant judge a store or a chain by a single employee. you have to judge the individual employees and/or owners. this even goes for gamestop. in general, gamestop is a mediocre chain, but if you know a great GS employee, then you have a great 'in' for freebies and deals and what not. -
GameStop becoming a technology company
chrisbid replied to Mendon's topic in Modern Console Discussion
broadband penetration is too limited in this country for a company to produce a download-only game machine. gamestop's problem isnt their sales model... it was their method of expansion. they took on a ton of debt to buy up their competitors to be the only game in town, and the results have been shakey. the moment their interest rates begin to climb, the company will be dead meat. -
if you have a tv games plug n play, use that to test out tvs when you are out shopping. they take batteries and the av cable is attached.

Joking, no but time for Intellvision to relocate... Washington is pretty safe, no tornados... hurricanes or earthquakes, damp often so low fire risk.
