  1. pick up a gameboy player while they are cheap
  2. if you took away those 4 2nd wave games from 1987 (zelda, metroid, kid icarus, punchout), then the youre right, the NES is a glorified colecovision. but id put those four 1987 games into the second wave, as they did not use traditional scores, had passwords/battery capabilities, and had pushed tile graphics design to new heights. without those 4 titles, the NES wouldnt have become a legend.
  3. the short answer is yes, the early era NES has more in common with the golden age of video games than it does with modern gaming. the long answer would be a long discussion of how to differentiate NES eras. to simplify things, only look at first party releases (list taken from wikipedia - do not take all dates at face value) 10-Yard Fight 1985 Nintendo Baseball 1985 Nintendo Clu Clu Land 1985 Nintendo Donkey Kong Jr. Math 1985 Nintendo Duck Hunt 1985 Nintendo Excitebike 1985 Nintendo Golf 1985 Nintendo Gyromite 1985 Nintendo Hogan's Alley 1985 Nintendo Ice Climber 1985 Nintendo Kung Fu 1985 Nintendo Mach Rider 1985 Nintendo Pinball 1985 Nintendo Stack-Up 1985 Nintendo Super Mario Bros. 1985 Nintendo Tennis 1985 Nintendo Wild Gunman 1985 Nintendo Wrecking Crew 1985 Nintendo Balloon Fight 1986 Nintendo Donkey Kong 1986 Nintendo Donkey Kong 3 1986 Nintendo Donkey Kong Jr. 1986 Nintendo Gumshoe 1986 Nintendo Mario Bros. 1986 Nintendo Popeye 1986 Nintendo Urban Champion 1986 Nintendo Kid Icarus 1987 Nintendo The Legend of Zelda 1987 Nintendo Metroid 1987 Nintendo Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! 1987 Nintendo Pro Wrestling 1987 Nintendo Rad Racer 1987 Nintendo Slalom 1987 Nintendo Soccer 1987 Nintendo Volleyball 1987 Nintendo Anticipation 1988 Nintendo Ice Hockey 1988 Nintendo R.C. Pro-Am 1988 Nintendo Super Mario Bros. 2 1988 Nintendo Super Team Games 1988 Nintendo World Class Track Meet 1988 Nintendo Zelda II: The Adventure of Link 1988 Nintendo Cobra Triangle 1989 Nintendo Dance Aerobics 1989 Nintendo Dragon Warrior 1989 Nintendo Faxanadu 1989 Nintendo Short Order/Eggsplode 1989 Nintendo Tetris 1989 Nintendo To the Earth 1989 Nintendo Barker Bill's Trick Shooting 1990 Nintendo Dr. Mario 1990 Nintendo Final Fantasy 1990 Nintendo NES Play Action Football 1990 Nintendo Nintendo World Cup 1990 Nintendo Pinbot 1990 Nintendo Snake Rattle n Roll 1990 Nintendo StarTropics 1990 Nintendo Super Mario Bros. 3 1990 Nintendo Super Spike V'Ball 1990 Nintendo NES Open Tournament Golf 1991 Nintendo Yoshi 1992 Nintendo Kirby's Adventure 1993 Nintendo Tetris 2 1993 Nintendo Yoshi's Cookie 1993 Nintendo Mega Man 6 1994 Nintendo Wario's Woods 1994 Nintendo Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II 1994 Nintendo a good way to define eras is to use the flagship super mario bros series. smb 1 era 1985-1987 smb 2 era 1987-1989 smb 3 era 1990-1994 the actual cutoff points are up for debate, but 4 1987 titles (zelda, metroid, punchout, and kid icarus) have more in common with the second era (better graphics, longer adventures, no formal scoring) than the first era (arcade style gameplay). the third era is pretty easy to define. super mario bros 3 was the last monster hit on the NES. there are plenty of quailty titles in this era, but interest in the NES was beginning to erode and 16 bit consoles were beginning to pique the interest of the gaming masses. in fact, the only megahit in the 1989 list was tetris. the rest of the 89 titles can be lumped in with the smb 3 late NES era if you wanted to think along those lines.
  4. another psx can go for as low as 5 dollars. especially since you do not need cables, controllers and memory cards. or you can pick up a ps2. phat models go for as low as 30 dollars, and slims clock in around 50.
  5. yes, it was slow for me. and some of my votes werent accepted the first time i clicked on them. i had to reload the era page to register the votes a second time.
  6. http://www.artofvideogames.org the smithsonian is running an online poll to determine which examples of artwork within video games best represent each era the polls themselves are by system and genre, and at least to me they are tough calls examples 2600 action games Tunnel Runner Haunted House Pac Man 2600 adventure games Adventure Pitfall ET 2600 target games Space Invaders Missile Command Yars' Revenge 2600 combat/strategy games Combat Star Raiders Video Chess i voted for system original games whenever i could, rather than ports, but sadly how can one choose between pitfall and adventure? sure pitfall is more "advanced" but I would argue the creativity behind adventure is more impressive than pitfall. of course, due the infamy of ET and the mentality of most gamers when it comes to the 2600, it will likely win
  7. in a word, yes but i am currently holding back my points until june when club nintendo resets. i already have platinum status for this year and do not want to make it more difficult to make it next year.
  8. but doesnt na have an affiliation with retrousb? they make quite a few "reproductions" there...
  9. i question the ethics of a website called nintendoage come up with your own name, name pirates
  10. the genesis 2 is the worst option of the three. the sound is horrible (i dont have youtube access at work, but look up some sound comparisons between genny 1 and the genny 2).
  11. the slow pace allows for longer clips of gameplay footage. 1-2 second gameplay clips do not do a good job of showing how a game plays
  12. astrosmash and astroblast are really 2 different games sure, the basic gameplay element in the two games are the same, but astroblast is a manic shooter that is over in a matter of minutes, and astrosmash is a trance shooter that most people can play for hours. at the X6 level in astrosmash, the speed is pretty much the same as the standard level in astroblast.
  13. neither show me original unique and fun games to play on your platform. im not dropping 250+ to play the same old things on a shiny new piece of plastic
  14. he was first back in 2000, and he reviews a wide range of games from the 2600 to modern games. he has the same general tastes i do (2600, Genesis, Dreamcast/action games over rpgs), a dry sense of humor, and he doesnt pretend to be a know-it-all. he isnt tech savvy, so the context of his reviews arent as clouded with nerd speak disguised as real opinion and knowledge. i also love that he doesnt grade games.
  15. Pending Sale for this Unit. Sold to a gentleman in Canada. I bought this unit off of Yurkie and I can attest to its sheer awesomeness! Seriously, he did a great job restoring it and I would highly recommend buying from him or having him refurb one of your own less-than-stellar units. He really cares about ensuring there will be classic gaming goodness for a while to come and I for one appreciate what he does. (Plus he called me a gentleman which doesn't happen enough to me. ) BUYER BE WARE!!! I sent my own WORKING ColecoVision I tested it before I boxed it up. Yurkie was going to perform the A/V mod as well as switch refurb (I don't even think it needed it, but wanted to be safe and get it done) I was also getting the insides of my working ColecoVision put in a new shell because I'm from Canada and my ColecoVision was bilingual. Phus two controller refurm and ball knobs. Well it cost me $180.00 for all this and when I got it home it didn't work and the new shell was in poor condition. I contacted Yurkie and he offered to try again if I ship back he would cover return shipping. When he got my console back he said it worked fine there. He replaced the shell once again and sent it back. It cost me $20 in customs fees to get my console back and it still doesn't work with either of my power supplies. My other Colecovision works with both of the same power supplies. How can this be??? I'm out a working ColecoVision, $240.00, and my wife is super pissed. BUYER BE WARE!!! try a different television and try using the rf again. for whatever unseen reason, my colecovision a/v mod will not work on my sd gaming tv. but i tried three other tvs (two hd sets and a small sd tv) and it worked on those sets and the rf works on everything.
  16. i ended up getting my ps3 fixed at the local play n trade. it cost me 100 dollars. a much better deal than mailing it to sony.
  17. I really enjoy Rescue Mission! and how can one top Missile Defense 3-D! I love my MasterSystem, it stay connected to the tv, most of my systems don't. That said I'm looking for more arcade style for the MAME cab. On a side note, what is the deal with the 3D games on the MasterSystem? Can I use other set ups to play them or what because I've seen the games, but I've never seen hardware to make them playable. Just a really screwed up looking screen. I never got into the 3D games for the system back in the day so I have alot fo catch up on. the 3D glasses are technically required for the 3D games. i remember zaxxon 3d having a 2d option that is selectable with a code. check gamefaqs for codes. as for the 3d glasses, they arent super rare, but they tend to break easily. most of the pairs i see have one or both of the arms broken. the 3d effect in 198x was pretty cool, but nowadays they are a curiosity at best and a pain in the butt the rest of the time.
  18. gameboy tetris - the quintessential handheld game
  19. i just got a few of the cables from tototek, they arent super long (i think 4 feet) and they are a tad too tight for the 5200 controller ports, but they do work and the price is more than reasonable.
  20. correct me if im wrong, but dont you have to use different light guns for different games? you have to use a guncon for namco games, a justifier for konami games, etc. but, a playstation 1 in an arcade cab setup would be dirt cheap.
  21. with a US dreamcast youre sol you can play HotD 2 on the original XBox, there is an ok gun for that system. Or you can pick it up for wii, which can be fairly good if you have the right gun attachment for your wiimote. or you can import a japanese dreamcast (they really arent too expensive) and official lightgun http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3437/3893972234_98680a0bc2.jpg i still vote for the saturn for your cab
  22. Thats the one I liked the look of much better and seemed like it would be easier to hold and use, but also the one that had the most negative reviews. I'll take your work for it and order a pair soon. Thanks for the information. they are very poorly built, ive had 2 of them break on me. you have to be especially careful of buying used ones
  23. for gun games, you really cant go wrong with either choice saturn virtua cop virtua cop 2 area 51 house of the dead crypt killer dreamcast house of the dead 2 virtua cop 2 (sega smash pack) death crimson ox confidential mission however, the actual gun controllers are another issue. the sega stunner for the saturn is a fantastic heavy plastic light gun. its the closest youre going to get to a real arcade light gun. US Dreamcasts can only use 3rd party light guns, and none of them are great. with an import system, you can use official sega dreamcast light guns, but they arent as good as saturn stunners.
