Motherboards...which to use? Need advice please!
cbmeeks replied to cbmeeks's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Thanks for the tip. That cable looks nice. Do you know where I can tell if these motherboards are even 1040's? YEARS ago when I bought one of them, the guy said it was a 520 ST. I even have the 520 ST case it came in. Thanks. -
OK, so I have six Atari ST's. I don't know which ones work. Out of the six, two of them are the very first 520 ST (no f, m, or anything..plain vanilla 520 ST). So, I'm not going to worry about them at the moment. Which leaves me with four ST motherboards. I can't seem to find reliable information on identifying these boards. Here are the boards that I have: A: C070789-001 REV. C Date code: 3587 NO Modulator All SIX of the RAM socketed on left All 32 RAM (I guess?) RAM chips soldered in upper left. Is this video RAM? B: C070859-001 REV. 2.0 Date code: Unknown HAS Modulator Only TWO of the six RAM is socketed. Only 16 of the 32 RAM chips soldered in upper left. Half missing. Less video RAM?? C: C070523-REV. D Date code: 1988 (can't find week) NO Modulator Appears to have six RAM chips socketed but on of them appears to be a battery backup board? Has all 32 RAM chips soldered along the bottom. Two rows of 16. Is this video RAM? D: C070523-REV. D This appears to be the exact same board. The only difference I see is that it only has 16 of the 32 RAM chips soldered on the bottom. My purpose is to get at least one of these running. I do not have an Atari monitor. So, I'm going to try and get some type of converter or maybe try and built an S-Video adapter (I did this with the Amiga). 90% of the stuff I want to do is play games. I would, however, be interested in running some music software in hi-res if possible. Out of the four, I'm thinking the C might be my best. It seems to have all RAM chips populated. However, it's missing the modulator. But, if I can get some other type of display out, I may not care about that. Your opinions are appreciated. I've never used the ST before so I'm flying blind here. Thanks!!! PS: I can post pics if needed.

What's the latest version of DOS that works on Tandy 1000 EX?
cbmeeks replied to cbmeeks's topic in Tandy Computers
I just bought the parts for a ISA Compact Flash adapter. I might try using that in my Compaq and then write 5.25" disks from there for my Tandy. Hmmm.... **EDIT** Wait...that's what you were saying....lol. Yeah, good idea. Thanks. -
What's the latest version of DOS that works on Tandy 1000 EX?
cbmeeks replied to cbmeeks's topic in Tandy Computers
Thanks for the link! Yeah, I think I will take that machine apart and see if I can give it a better cleaning. Especially the drive. Do you know of a way for me to get those Tandy disks copied over to a floppy? I guess I need to get a 5.25" drive for my modern computer. Thanks -
Thanks for the kind offer. I appreciate it but I found a new one for just a little over $24. Thanks for the information!

I'm building a Pentium 2 machine to play DOS games. I don't have the parts in front of me at the moment but it will basically be something like: Pentium 2 (233 MHz I *IIRC*). Could be a little faster than this...can't remember the speed. 32-64 MB RAM CD Burner (IDE) Sound Blaster 16 Low end PCI (maybe AGP) video card. Nothing special. 3.5" Floppy drive 7200 RPM Hard drive I'm wondering what power supply to get. It uses ATX but I don't want to spend much money if I don't have to. I'm running a modern Windows 10 machine now on a 750W supply. So I can't imagine I would need anything near that. What size PSU would you guys recommend? I'm thinking around 400W. Thanks for any suggestions.

Title pretty much says it all. So I got a version of DOS off eBay. It's 6.22 and it came on 5.25" floppies. I realized my Tandy 1000 EX has a 360K drive. So it can't natively read the 1.2 MB disks that I got. Luckily, I have a Compaq Portable III (286) that reads it just fine. So I created a 360K DOS boot disk. But, the Tandy won't read it. I'm not convinced the drive is good in the Tandy. Some disks get stuck in it. But I can't get anything to boot on that machine. I read that the Tandy 1000 EX shipped with DOS 2.11. How can I either get DOS 2.11 on a 5.25" floppy or find another way to play some damn games on this computer! :-/ I've tried eBay but can't find a copy that old of DOS. Thanks!

How to load programs on an old PC/Tandy 1000?
cbmeeks replied to spacecadet's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
One thing you should look into is getting a GoTek floppy emulator. That allows you to plug in a USB stick into the floppy emulator and DOS thinks it's a normal floppy disk. You can buy them all over eBay but don't pay more than about $35-$40 or so. Maybe even less. Much more than that and the seller is probably ripping you off. General information about GoTek is here: http://www.gotek.in/ -
Those lo-tech devices look to be exactly what I need. I emailed the guy and asked if I could help out with any Tandy 1000 EX testing and if he had anything to offer for that machine. Thanks for the help, everyone.

I was afraid of that. So my only option of an internal hard drive/CF drive is going to be finding an authentic adapter made for the 1000 EX? That sucks. Thanks. That's better than nothing. I've ordered some DOS disks. Do you know how I can get Telix on disk?

I just bought MS-DOS 6.2 on 5 1/4" floppy. I hope to run DOS and maybe Window 3.11. I only want Windows to make networking a little easier...and maybe a few Windows games.

Thanks. I have a Gotek but I don't believe it will fit. Any info on a hard disk solution?

My search skills are failing me. I really want to play some games on my Tandy 1000 EX. Unfortunately, I only have the base unit. No software. Games on eBay are too expensive thanks to scalpers. So I'm looking for recommendations on what to buy. A CF drive inside would be ideal if that option exists. If not, then eBay games it is. I feel like I have a beautiful vintage car with no way to put gas in it. Kings Quest looks fun. Any other recommendations? I like platformers, Zelda like games, etc. But just getting the software on the computer is proving to be a challenge. Thanks.

Speaking of memory, check out my recent haul of 72 and 30 pin SIMM's!

I have fond memories of using DJGPP with DOS when I was young. I want to relive those memories. Doesn't have to be with DJGPP or Allegro. But I thought it would be fun to do some DOS development. Anyone still doing it? Do you use modern tools? Thanks

@barrym95838 Ugh. You're right. UPS was right at $75 and US Mail was way more than that! Hmm. I haven't tried DHL but I think they are pricey and better for international shipments. I'd really like to have it but I'd hate to pay $75 for shipping. Plus, I'd want to give you something for it. Especially for packaging up that beast. Anyone else know of cheaper shipping methods? If not, I'd rather see it go to another good home instead of a landfill. Thanks for your help.

The Amiga 1000 had a 256K upgrade (512K) plus the 512K of the Amiga 500 + the others is well over ONE MEGABYTE.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the delay. OK, I just bought two Sound Blaster 16 cards. One is a CT2230 and the other is the newer CT4170. Got the 4170 for $4. Anyway, I plan on putting the 4170 in the P2. I want to build a 486 from which I will use the CT2230. I already have a Tandy 1000 EX and plan on getting a 5150 this year. So I will have the gamut of DOS machines. :-)

Is it possible to read all Genesis controller buttons (A,B,C & Start) from an Atari 800? Without hardware modification or adapters? Thanks.

32k expansion for the side port - released

What's the latest on this? Me wanty. Me wanty very much. -
Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I need to get 32K for my TI. :-)

I just got my Flash99 rom kit. After some soldering, it's working like a champ. Anyway, I was wondering if there are any VGM (video game music) players out there? I'm weird in that I like listening to music on these chips. Something that worked with 16K machines would be great. Thanks

That's awesome. But what is this WHT you speak of? Thanks!

Those are good suggestions. I need to get me a de-soldering pump considering all of the vintage hardware I have that could use a little TLC.

Other than just swapping parts, what are some tips for debugging a dead board? Perhaps some continuity testing? Voltage tests?
