  1. Cafeman:

    Clarify this:

Is Barney the big enemy we are going after? Or is that our Hero?! If you make Barney the Hero..then the game will suck and I won't get very far cause I will be killing him off all the time on purpose!!! Now however, if you make it so that Barney is the enemy..then we could work with that. My wife would be pissed about it since my Son really likes Barney show she would have a problem with me getting the game there. But, I can deal with that.

  2. quote
I do have problems with some DOS-based emulators, but overall it works pretty well. Fortunately most of them do work and there are plenty of Windows-based emulators out there as well.

This is why I don't use the DOS emus in WinNT technology OS systems. See, the emus themselves will work. But my SBLive! doesn't provide anysound at all in them. So while many Emus that are Dos only I can get to at least show the game and play it even under WinXP...I can't get any sound period! So...Win9x emus I go...

  3. Yeap...Genesis pads and Sega Master System pads work fine. Also, the 7800 gamepad controller should work as well. I myself don't have the 7800 gamepad...but I can't see why it wouldn't since normal 7800 sticks do work just fine.

  4. Dern,,,I wanted to add that to add an increased amount of challenge...

When I mentioned about your princess be taken away...or you being stuck with a curse or spell you would in fact be imposing a Time limit of sorts in which you have to finish the game.

By the way...randomizing the mystery castle would be an easy thing as you could have it set up so that any particular spot in the game would in fact transport you to the begining screen for that mystery castle. I also was toying with an idea that would add some realism..Albiet little realism. But you could change the shadow perspective in the game to give a sense of some real depth to the areas you are exploring. For instance the yellow castle has a shadow going toward the upper right indicating the sun is actually to the upper left behind us. You could change this as you explore. It would be a static thing of course and I am not suggestion that it actually change.

But you could have spots in the game that could trigger alternate graphics like a sort of psuedo night and day affair. You could in fact set it up so that you could have a health meter instead of just a single hit and your dead approach. Then you could have it so that you can go to Camps to restore and rest. This would also cause the night - day switch in the graphics. This would be fun since some tasks might only be possible at night.

I don't know maybe this is way way too complex but from what I have seen so far in relation to what the 5200 is capable of I think it would be possible. Mind you the game really can't be much longer than the original since attention spans can wane..and also we don't really have the ability to do a Save feature on this kind of hardware. Unless you can incorporate some sort of Password feature which retains this info.

Okay...just wanted to clarify those thoughts...now to think about Tempest Secret Agent X game...

    Matt you should title it:

Agent x: The Atarian Project...or something like that.

Game play is easy..as I think yours could be based off different styles or modes of gameplay. Say an elevator action type of thing where you go in...snag some document or documents from a maze of rooms and cubicals in an office building or something.

You could have action sequences that could be both a mix of your Robotron like idea and maybe even like a side scroller of sorts. You know do a robotron game style to gain access into the building..then try and find the secret documents or document form the maze of the building itself (Could even do multiple floors where the elevator action mode could be used.) The maze itself could be guarded by either more enemies like in the Tron Tank sequence in the arcade game there...or you could do robot guards ( Hubots... ). Then you could set it up so you have to either set up a bomb in a particular spot in the building prior to leaving to destroy all evidence and prevent the enemy from developing their secret project ( Which could be a weapon or an uber secret console! (Panther) ).

Then do a Moon patrol sorta sequence as you try and speed away from the scene to victory!.

Wow...I just thought of something. Instead of a robotron sequence for getting into the buildings...why not do a combo. Do robotron but with a Crystal Castles perspective to it!!!...Oh yeah...

    Any thing else?

  5. Wow..this is a tough call. You will get more for the Glib if you leave it totally sealed. Therefore I say you don't touch it and let the new owner (Hopefully somebody from this board), actually open it up and scan the manual in later. If it were me and I were the seller...I wouldn't open it or attempt to clean it up in anyway if I even suspected it could be damaged in the process.

    Just me thoughts...

    BTW..Glib is an excellent find!!

  6. W1ly...actualy that does make some sense.

Intinially that could have been the reason for having them face the way they did on the Lynx1. When the Lynx II came out...all Atari did was add a stereo Headphone jack, tweak the power light to indicate low battery, and or course add the backlight switch. Otherwise I suspect most of the internal layout between the two are pretty similar. So that would explain why the carts still face inward to the Lynx even if the original reason for doing so no longer exists. Namely that of protection for the carts from the door.

  7. I could see that Tempest... I guess that psuedo 3-D perspective would be hard to pull off.

But you could start it with a mission briefing screen where you are told about the mission of course and how many documents you must find. Also you could randomize as to whether you just grab the documents and run...or blow up the building...or perhaps take the documents and move them somewhere else...or something like that. Heck you could even change the scenario of what you have to get and where the stuff is. You could have to hijack a secret tank...or something. Or smuggle documents...or an uber rare game cart.

So basically you start with a menu screen to select difficulty and perhaps starting mission level. Then have the Briefing screen with the details. Then have a Moon Patrol sequence to get to the building..or a spyhunter kinda thing. Then have the robotron like gameplay outside the complex, then the maze affair with the hubots or guards in the corridors. That portion could be overhead. You could even add security keys that have to be found to access the rooms to get the documents or whatever. Also divide that up with the multiple floors with that elevator action like sequence...to the bottom. Then the moon patrol sequence again or spy hunter whichever you didn't use the first time to escape and win the level. Then repeat with everything being much more difficult.

Hmm...if I only had a napkin to sketch this out on...it would really be official.

    hehe...

Let me know if there is anything else you need my imagination for?

  8. Okay...my turn to lay out some ideas I was playing with today.

WARNING!!! This will be a looonnnggg post.

First the graphics if they are to be based off that single screen shot that we have of the Yellow castle, look fantastic!!!

The character could be a Square "Dot" or an actual sprite..or whatever, to me the character is whomever I want to pretend to be.

Now for the some gameplay ideas. I am sure you guys were thinking along this same line as well but here goes:

The basic storyline would appear to take place either right after our first adventure, or perhaps sometime after as that doesn't really make any difference. Either way our hero would be set out to the task to either save his princess to be...or perhaps he has been struck with some curse or spell that will cause him to either die or change into something not human. There we have a basic ground from which to work with. Now for the over all gameplay it could be something like this.

First our hero could either start from the same place each time in the "World" your constructing for him to move around in...or in more difficult levels you could randomize his start location.

The basic idea of the story would be to have to defeat some large enemy be it a wizard, Demon, Spirit, or grand Dragon of sorts. However this final confrontation would only take place within a mysterious castle that could change locations each time you play the game. I will explain how the character would get to the castle later. So then in order to get to this final destination and goal...our Hero would have to get items from all throughout the kingdom and clues if you will to find the hidden castles location. To do this the hero would have to get passed several obstacles throughout the kingdom as well that would require the items to have to used in certain places to pass these obstacles. You could for instance have an Ice like maze with the usual assortment of bats or Yetties...or something but then have a magical Ice gate that would require a Staff of Fire or something to melt it. This staff could be found randomly from other places or in one location like a Fire Castle..or something.

Using that basic idea would require an Inventory of sorts but that wouldn't be much of a problem. Afterall this is a 5200 project and hence there is much for use. The inventory could be done as Alan suggested by using part of the main playfield screen to display say...3 - 6 objects at once. Or your could have it accessed via the keypad to a different screen where the joystick would be used to select which object or item you want active.

To simplify this you could have the sword always be avail and not have to found as a seperate object. You could provide more powerful swords later on that could have magic or something. Anyway use of the sword primarily would be done with one fire button. Use of the currently selected item from inventory could be done from the second fire button...or a key from the numpad. You could set it up so that the sword will kill all creatures if they hit it directly...but you could also set it up so that if you had a secondary weapon use it could shoot fireballs or lightning...or darts...or I don't know what else. Each of these or course would be more damaging than the last like Darts to Fireballs to Lightning or something.

Now you could set the game up to also have it randomize key items you need but only certain items as some things need to be accessable from the start just to get going.

But if you use different mazes like a fire maze...water maze...etc...then of course the creatures should be done to match. You could also have a thief who wonders around and is a general pain in the butt that cannot be killed but can be sent away with your sword or some magical item.

Well..that is a basic for now that I was sorta tossing in my head. This type of game would be largly played out like one of those old Sierra On-Line graphic adventures but without the typing needed and therefore be more of a SwordQuest sort of affair. Only the items would make sense as to their use.

Phew!..Okay...back to work I go. (Doing more screenshots for the Age...)

  9. Let confuse it further by noting that while the while the 2600 had the cart labels facing away...the 5200 had them facing towards you. Then of course the 7800 comes out..and Atari once again decides to start facing the labels away from you once again. But then comes the Lynx where you can't see the label at all since it faces toward you...but is covered by the unit itself once inserted. And then of course there is the Jaguar where Atari goes back to the 5200 roots and the labels are facing towards you once again where they can be seen.

    Moral?

There isn't one...only that Atari apparently couldn't make up their minds as to how they really wanted the carts to face. My suspicion is that the 7800 is reversed like it's related older brother the 2600 simply to make it easier for those who got the 7800 to use it if they were prior using a 2600 before that. After all the marketing back in 86 was more towards getting the 2600 user to upgrade to the 7800 for it backward compatibility.

Okay, enough speculation for now...anyone else have any other ideas?

  10. While I agree that most of the crap in XP isn't needed for the power users such as most of us...I also haven't had it crash once!!..and trust me...I have tried to.

As for Dos console stuff...forget it...most of them cause page faults withing the dos session, so I am basically limited to using only Win9x Emus now...Hence Mess32 is my only available 7800 emu.

Otherwise, I think XP essentially ROX!!!

  11. Tempest:

We have talked this before...the 7800 Robotron does have two sticks as an option. Plug in a second controller and start moving it...and you will start to fire with it as well.

Just don't have that cool stick holder that the 5200 has for these kinds of games...so it gets a bit awkward.

  12. Malix....

The Below pertains to Mess32 as it is the only Mess I can really use in WinXP.

The problem is that Mess isn't seeing the 7800 bios file correctly. You need to get the a7800.zip file that contains the 7800.rom file in it. Leave it zipped and put that into a new folder that you create called "A7800". This folder is also where all the roms will go still left in Zip format.

Now the weird part is that you may have to rename that a7800.zip file. I have downloaded it from many places and it had all sorts of various names so make sure it is called "a7800.zip".

Now in mess itself you have to configure the directory lay out so that the roms section points to this A7800 folder you made earlier. You also have to point the software folder to the same place.

Then in Messes Default options area...there is tab labeled as "Software" In here you need to once again specify that A7800 folder. That last bit will actuall cause all the roms to show up in the list. Now you only need to double click on a game to start it up.

Other versions of Mess work similar to this but I haven't played with any except for the Mess32 version.

Give that a try as I have had most success with this.

  13. Impossible Mission doesn't work in any format either NTSC nor Pal under Mess or V7800 right now. Mr. Boris updated some bugs outta the 7800 driver and now has Impossible mission and some others working. But we all have to wait for next release of Mess before we can really test them out. BTW...this driver update should allow either Pal or the NTSC versions to function under Mess once released.

  14. Tim:

The Bin files are raw dumps. They have not had the rest of the info added to them (Headers) which are required for Mess and other Emus to run them. Also the headers haven't been added because these games do not currently run correctly in Emulation. Therefore the Roms remain in their raw .BIN format for developers to work with and hopefully increase compatibility on the Emus with so that someday they will run correctly.

In a nutshell these .Bin files are nor ready for playing in an emulator. They are only provided for download here at AtariAge for future use and development.

  15. Okay so I just recently joined the Lynx club *Yeah Me!*

Anyway, the Lynx II I aquired is missing the battery cover which isn't a huge deal as long as I don't jump up and down while playing with the thing. But is there somewhere online...or perhaps one you frequent Lynx hunters might know of where I could get a Battery cover for my Lynx II?

Also is there someplace online where I can get the Lynx ac adapter? I know that RS probably has a universal I could use in it. But I would rather keep it all Atari original.

  16. Not that I was able to tell. I played them both thoroughly and all the sounds were the same...the speed was the same (Which is still way too fast in Mess), and the graphics looked all the same between them.

I haven't done a Byte compare on them yet but I would imagine there isn't really much of a difference.

  17. Well no rare titles were to be found at that guys shop. He did have about 5 or so CIB games but I think they were all commons. Otherwise besides the system and a few loose carts of the same stuff that was CIB and some Sticks..that was all he had for O2 stuff...sorry.

Perhaps I can find something at a later time.

  18. Hehe...not much in my collections either..but here are some of my prized ones.

    2600: StarWars:TAG and Track n Field

5200: Rescue on Fractalus w /inst. I just won off ebay for $15.

7800: The unit itself is modded to play pal games and dump 2600/7800 carts to my PC. For games I would say my carts of Rampage,Double Dragon and then the following i got for 3 bucks each, Mat Mania,Ninja Golf, and Commando.

NES: My Boxed MicroMachines and Complete Dragon Warrior 1.

    SNES: My CIB Chrono Trigger

Genesis: Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force 2, etc...my Genny collection is almost as large as my 2600 collection so there is too many to list for favs...

    Intellivision: Happy Trails

ColecoVision: Popeye and Frogger because they are so much fun to play!!!

  19. Osbo..

Hehe..enjoy Ft. Sill...cause once your on the other side of the tracks...your world will change forever. You don't know what I mean right now...but you will come the 20th or so.

I too did my Basic, AIT, and was permanently stationed at Ft. Sill, OK. Heck...I live in Tulsa so it worked out well for me.

Good luck at boot camp son and remember these three rules...

Always do "Exactly" what your told to do when told to do it.

Never try and set the standards for the Platoon...that is...don't make yourself look too good because standing out...only makes your mistakes more obvious.

Finally, Never volunteer for anything!!!..You have to make the attempt as if your going to...otherwise the whole platoon gets dusted...but don't ever jump ahead and volunteer. In Boot camp...that usually means KP personell are needed and you don't want that trust me!

That is about all I can provide for now. Oh...hope you like the sound of Chains clanging in galvanized trash cans at 4:30-5:00 in the morning...heheh

Remember this, sunday you are allowed to go and worship for an hour or so...do this even if your not very religious because if nothing else...you get some time to yourself.

Above all, remember that the drill sergeants are human beings just like yourself. They do what they do for your protection believe it or not. They have a stressful job ahead of them and being jerks is basically the only way to get things done. Just follow my three rules above and you will do fine.

    Enjoy!

  20. Tempest,

I made both of these in about an hours timeframe by doing frame by frame screen grabs in the emus..

anyway, I can redo them very easily from the main screen grabs at any size you need without loss of quality. Otherwise you could do this with them now...but they will pixellate on you.

    Just let me know.

  21. Actually I have already reduced Tempest's avatar down and submitted it seperately to Alex and Albert...but not sure if they will swap it out or not.

His is so large because they are basically taking the actual image which is like just over 200 pixels in size..and squashing it into the 64x64 size for the avatar..problem is..the image is still the same size..it is only being drawn smaller..

But after optimizing his image..I got it down to 3k and it still looked as good as ever...
