I'm currently playing on my Super Console X4 Plus from Kinhank that has over a 120k built in games, literally any game from any console before the Dreamcast runs flawlessly on this device and I only payed 70 bucks for it on AliExpress ( it even came with two knockoff PS2 controllers which are actually pretty good), this idea that only high end computers can emulate flawlessly is an old myth that needs to die off.

We're getting to the point that even low powered emulation devices can run anything up to the Dreamcast flawlessly, just like I explained in my other post just before this one, the need for an FPGA for high quality emulation is greatly diminishing with each and every passing year, another reason why I think this fad ( by fad I  really mean obsession that certain groups within the retro gaming community have with these things  ) is going to die off soon .

If I buy this thing and find flaws, I'm gonna be like JPF997!!!!!

Maybe that's the problem there?   I've never used an AT Games device,  but I've never experience the kind of lag people complain about on my emulation PC.

Yeah, that's definitely the problem.  PC emulation is pretty sweet, but I thought (could be wrong) we were talking about the mini-console gadget things that use emulation instead of FPGA.   Some of those are alright, but I haven't played one yet that didn't feel a bit lacking in areas.  And worst cases are the ones that render great games virtually unplayable (AtGames comes to mind there)

*Please don't mention "game mode" on your PC on monitor to fight lag. Ive heard that excuse for 20 years and all my monitors and TVs were meticulously purchased and fine-tuned to avoid lag.*

Yeah, that's annoying.  Plug in a Analogue console and it's like (while not perfect) playable and feels like it should.  Plug in some AT Games thing to the same tv, same settings, same input, blah blah, turn the paddle knob, go have dinner, and come back to watch the thing move (slight exaggeration) and some yay-hoo will be like "use game mode" like that's some magic fix all.

  4. Probably Tuesday.  Or maybe Wednesday.  Maybe later longer, I dunno...

It'll be sad, though, bc if that "fad" runs out, we may not have that option anymore but we'll probably still see a bunch of cheap, lower quality mini console thingies that somehow make all the games "less" when played on them, due to poor accuracy and introduced lag.

I don't know if it's "Hidden" or not...Seems like in lists,  it's always too low...

My Favorite 2600 game is Dark Cavern.

And the more I play it the more I like it!

    Yes, I second this one!

Funny thing is - I always used to see that in my rom list and dismissed it because, for some dumb reason, I thought it was gonna be a "lesser" version of Dark Chambers.  Ignorance, stupidity, I dunno... but I did.

Then I saw you squawking about it a few times on here and figured I'd give it a shot and was blown away!  It went from being something I thought was just cluttering up the "d" section in my game list to one of my all time favorites!  It's great and definitely shouldn't be "hidden!"

Would any of my wallpapers I would be using on The Atari Report (or even the name sake for the channel) if I were to bring it back be in violation of any of Atari's IP rights???

They do seem kinda sue-happy these days, so probably could bust you on a number of things --

Atari Logo -- how dare you!?!?!  Sued!

The word "Atari" -- eeek!!!!  Sued!

2600 -- They had a console named that, way back when. Sued!

5200 -- They had a console named that, way back when. Sued!

7800 -- They had a console named that, way back when. Sued!

Ray -- Former CEO had that name.  Legally change yours or face the consequences!

7ON7 -- Nobody knows what the fuck that nonsense even means, but sue anyways to be safe.

The War Room  -- "War" is too close to Combat.  Sued!!!!

Probably safest to roll everything up into one channel/show and call is <redacted> by <redacted>

Agreed!  I might play online with my buddies and think it's awesome.  Absolutely.  I just never had the opportunity so I can't say either way.  Not for any particular reason, but I also never wound up playing the first-person shooters too much, and I think (but could be wrong) that a good amount of the online stuff is that type of game, Halo, Call of Duty, etc.  I mostly play driving games, side-scrollers, etc.  Who knows, maybe I'll check it out now!  What do you guys all play?

We're all over the place, but I rarely play shooters.   Some of them play competitive matches a lot in games like COD, Rainbow 6 and such, but for the stuff that we play (we, with me included) it's primarily co-op gaming.  We'll play through the co-op campaigns of shooters like Halo, Gears of War and such, but some of us have gone through many, many playthroughs of all the  "souls" games.  We've poured several hundred hours into the newer Monster Hunter stuff.  The EDF Series is a campy blast when played with friends.   A TON of awesome memories from the original Helldivers (I haven't picked up the new one yet, but I hear it's awesome, too)

The Dynasty Warriors type of games (there's a bunch) usually aren't great on their own, but become great hack n' slash fun when played with friends.   Same for the Borderlands games.   Bro Force was pretty special and we come back to it frequently.  Not sure we'll every stop coming back to Torchlight 2.   I could keep going, but it'll get to be a long, long post  😁

Oh, you mentioned driving -- we also hit some racers co-op modes whenever they care to put them in.  The F1 series included co-op where you play on the same team, and that kept at least one friend and myself tied up for months.  Co-Op racing is rare, though, but would love to see more.

Maybe it's fun, I have no idea, I have never once played an online console game with other players from across the world, but that's the image that comes to mind for me.  I'm glad my memories of gaming when I was a kid are me and a bunch of my friends all in the same room having a laugh and playing everything from OG Atari 2600 to Genesis.

Embrace it and play with your friends instead of strangers, and you may see the appeal.

I'm a 70's/80's kid too, and I have those same memories of my friends and I in the same room playing all consoles.  But thankfully, we (some of us, at least) embraced the online thing asap and continued making those memories even after we were grown and scattered.  I'm glad my memories of gaming with my friends isn't restricted to a small section of my life and grateful that modern tech allows us to still stay connected, hang out, and continue building those memories.

I think the issue was that:

    * atari released the game in an unfinished and basically unplayable state

    * when the gaming public found out how problematic the game actually was, they opted not to buy - not sure you can call that a boycott

    * driv3r was never fully finished and the IP was eventually sold off

I thought those points were really all it was, too.   I loved the 1st one, liked the second quite a bit, but when 3 dame out, I thought it was a bit of a mess and figured the developers just didn't get to actually finish it.  So word got out that it was a turd and people just didn't buy it.  But OP said "still ended up being one of the best open world games ever made" so, I dunno.

By the way, if you could stop looking at my profile whenever I reply to you, that would be nice. 🙂

(or do it in a private window, that way I won't know 😉🤫)

that really block it?  that's weird.   I just opened your profile in incognito mode (assuming that's the same thing) -- but seems like it should still show I was snooping on ya.  Lemme know, please, I'm curious about that one.

Ol' Kirk used to check my profile multiple times per day for some reason - I have no idea why - even though I was on his ignore list.  So I figured it still tattled on the snoopers.

I was just trying to measure how many people here would say for example that they have as much fun playing Atari 2600 games today as they would playing PS2  games.

Ah, that's not how I took the question so my response was from a different viewpoint for sure.    Framed in that manner, I absolutely have just as much fun playing some A2600 games as I do some PS2 games.   But even that logic is a bit wobbly unless comparing like for like.  For example, I'd much rather play the best of Atari 2600 than the worst of PS2, but I'd also rather play the best of PS2 than the worst of Atari 2600 so, yeah.

  12. Wouldn't that mean that it's not really a big deal, though, if this is a top search result?   Like, if I create a topic that "AHJGKLFGJKFHBLEEEEHGIURTRHGJFKGH is a huge disaster!"   and that's the top result when someone searches for "AHJGKLFGJKFHBLEEEEHGIURTRHGJFKGH " then probably means it's not really a thing.

I dunno, I've never heard of "Driv3r Gate" before, so not sure of what happened and any details.  I thought it was simply that they released a crappy game (I know you like it, and that's fine) and fans wished they had taken time to finish/polish it instead of rushing it out for whatever reason.

Although I do seem to remember a magazine or some magazines being bribed to falsely give it a decent score.  Was that the deal, or something different?

Edit:  Excited to check in a few hours to see if AHJGKLFGJKFHBLEEEEHGIURTRHGJFKGH is at the top of a google search

The Atari 2600 is of course one of the all time greats. It is shit now, to most people, because it is so old, but it was awesome back in the day. No other Atari system makes the cut, though.

I don't necessarily agree with that bold part.  I think the reason most modern gamers think it's shit is because they play shit versions of the games.  Like AT Games crap, or compilations that try to use a joystick for paddle controllers.

No study or data or anything, but from my personal experience, I've seen my kids and their friends try to play A2600 games on AT games stuff and were disgusted and had the usual "this really all you had to play back in the day?" comments, and I connect the real thing on a CRT and they have a blast.  Suddenly these "shit games" become not only playable, but loads of fun.  We've had multiple days where we (me, the kids, their friends) would spend time playing Warlords, Circus Atari, Freeway, Keystone Capers, etc, and not a "wow, this is crap" comment to be had.  Just as fun as it always was.

  14. No, I don't think so.  And that's from someone with a lot of love for a bunch of Atari systems, so there's bias involved.   I think some of Atari's systems are "all time great" for their own reasons, but compared in a "all things equal" mentality, what I consider their best systems were too close to "video gaming infancy" and their later years plagued with lackluster libraries and support.

Ledzep  never actually managed to disprove my claims that Atari's identity is intrinsically tied to the Space age or that Synthwave aesthetics fit Atari games  like a glove. Everytime I provided evidence to those claims he simply moved the goalpost and demanded that I provide even more "persuasive" evidence for him to finally be convinced.

He's over in another thread arguing about some "hyperbolic statement" about Star Wars or Disney or something, I dunno...  I think we (AA Community) need to pull a "parent trap'" and get you two back together again.

And obviously it's something of a double-standard with violence versus "sexy," especially in America.

Yeah, video games really took the violence to the next level, but they haven't been "sexy" since the Atari 2600 days of Custer's Revenge, Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em, etc.  Those games had class.
