Not really. Doom has texture mapped everythings, floors walls, even bitmap sprites. The Jag's true strength when it comes to 3D lies in gaurad shaded polly's, texture mapping wasnt really what it was ment to do, tho as Doom shows it does it quite nicely.

I've allways thought that would be a good idea... but.... be damned careful you dont blow them up in the process.

What the jaguar was really good at...and wha atari should..
Tyrant replied to john6370's topic in Atari Jaguar
Its well known I think, I even ran across it while playing a 3DO in a display case at a show in 95. However in an indeal world they would have made a patch (obviously not possible) or a new version available, I just wondered if anyone knew if this had happened. -
I was going to mention earlier that I *think* its fixable, but I may be totally and utterly wrong. Thankfully my JagCD has been in perfect condition since I got it, so I've never payed too much attention to the many discussions about how to fix them. I decided that my less than helpful input wouldnt help, so decided to wait until the experts came online and posted (some people here are... well experts hehe). I was also going to congratulate you on getting a Jag, and welcom you to the board, so consider yourself congratulated and welcomed =) Im sure you'll find a thousand and one "which games should I buy" threads, so there's no need to start another one hehe (they go on forever and lead nowhere). But suffice it to say the Jag has a large number of really excelent games, but unfortunatly also a large number you'll regret getting unless your planning to collect everything.

The Jag has FlashRom carts, they're quite rare and allways expensive (and I believe quite easy to damage and hard to repair). Nobody made them except Atari tho, I dont think anyone has tried since they went belly up. Normal cartridges are quite easy to make, just needs a couple of standard prom chips, a simple pcb and a case, people like Thunderbird, Carl from Songbird, and B&C (I think) make their own carts, since they are the only people producing games currently. Also there is the Alpine board of course, which is the part of the official dev kit which looks like a giant T shaped cartridge, and essentially contains a load of battery backed up ram, as well as various debugger functions and things.

Much as I hate getting entangled in these "what if" or "games that would be cool" threads (they can go on forever and lead to absolutely nothing productive in the end). Kasumi Ninja feels just like MK with nicer backgrounds to me. I dont play it much since Im not a huge fan of beat em ups, and cause I dont want to spoil the headband by wearing it much (and dont want to play without wearing it hehe).

While we're talking about 3DO's, did anyone ever notice an interesting thing? I only have a few games for mine, but games like po'd (only have a demo ver unfortunatly), and Killing time (most hauntingly scarry game I've played in a long time), and even the doors in space hulk, all look very very flat... like the walls are 2D, which I guess they are, but they shouldnt be. Im not sure how much this was a restriction caused by the 3DO's hardwre, or just a design issue in a few games, but it does look... odd hehe. Oh, and while I know this is a Jag group not a 3DO group, does anyone know if there is a version of Space Hulk that dosnt crash in close combat? I love the game, but its soooo annoying to spend half an hour or more on a level, make it almost to the objective, then crash cause of a bug. -
The most interesting thing about missile command is that its the only Jag game to support the Virtuality Helmets... then again there are only 2 of those in existance so that dosnt affect most people much.

Please remember to add all these things to the sign up list on the site, so its easier to find, without re-reading through a 3 page thread.

You can give me a copy of Vid Grid and the Myst Demo hehe, I dont have either yet. I'd be happy to take a few copies of the T2k soundtrack from you too if your offering .

Well, if your programing, adding a 50/60hz switch would allow you to test your code both for pal and ntsc machines... But you can turn a standard Jaguar into a developer jag in 2 easy steps. First replace the standard boot chip with a stubulator rom, and then just solder on the pins to attach a stop cable to. Then you can plug in an alpine and you'll have a fully working dev system. One day when I get round to it, I'll take a spare Jag I picked up a while ago, and give it a 50/60Hz switch, stop cable, and all 3 boot chips on a switcher board (Retail, Stubulator, and BJL). Pretty pointless since I have an official dev jag, and BLJ on ProtectorSE, but it'll be fun.

That is something Im really looking forward to, getting my first real look at BattleSphere, how many copies / CatBoxes / JagLink2's are people bringing?

Urgh, we're going to let amoeba people in?

This is all coming together nicely... we just need 3 things I can think of... A Venue... nothing much can happen without somewhere for it to happen in, everyone please search for cheap places in your area, if we're not expecting to hav *that* many people it dosnt need to be huge. An organiser... I set up the website, but I really dont want to be in charge of planning the whole thing, I'd be happy to do quite a lot of the organising, but we really should get one or two people who are willing and able to take on the chalange of running an event like this. A logo... very silly but a nice logo is important... Oh, and great news that 16/32 systems will be there, is anyone else coming to sell stuff apart from me? I quite like the idea of having retro people from other systems come too, the more people who come, the cheaper the room will be, and it'd be nice to convert some people . What does everyone else think?

I give up.

While mentioning the guide, if you do the bi-colour led mod... you can link it into the same switch as the pal/ntsc switch... if you use a TRIcolour led, that has 3 legs, you can connect the central one to the led's normal cathode or annode (depends if your tricolour is common cathode or common annode (positive or negative is in the center pin)), and then the two legs to either throw of the DPDT switch, this you dont need an entire DPDT just for the led as you would with a bi-colour. Just a small thing, but might be worth changing in the faq since having a seperate switch for the colour seems kinda pointless to me (except that you can change it while the jag is on and see the light changing hehe).

Anybody care to make a vidcap of this for all of us on the other side of the world pond?
-
Thats's not co-incidence. If you only play a game once, your more likely to go out and buy the sequal, mission pack, bug fix, etc. This is unfortunatly what happens when grey men in grey suits are running the entertainment industries.

If you go to the sign up list, you can set if your coming or not (just joining the group isnt enough since people who are interested but cant come could join), you can also enter any comments, for example, what you plan to bring with, in the notes field there. As for people having grudges about msn, Im very sorry but can anyone think of a better way? msn groups have some lovely tools, are free, and very easy for people to use. I thought about putting the site up on Atari.net, since apart from anything else it would get a cool url, but while they offer free hosting, they have to set up any scripts, and since everything we need is dynamic thats a lot of work to ask the operators to do and totally pointless since an msn group does it all automatically. Think of it this way... every page you view costs them money, as long as you dont click any banners you getting one over on Bill Gates every time you use the site.
-
It'll make the planning a lot more dificult if you dont register there. Obviously micros~1 are the most evil company in the world, with the possible exception of aohell, but... msn groups are very useful tools, I thought about somewhere like geocities, looked at Atari.net, but settled on msn since they allow a lot of interaction, and can have multiple administrators so I dont have to do all the work, and I cant be acused of being a powermonger (not that anyone is likely to do that hehe). You can read without being a member, but to post anything you need to sign up, for which you need a passport (any email address can become a passport by visiting passport.com or hotmail addresses are automatically passports). I really think everyone should sign up, it would make things very confusing otherwise. I understand the moral objections, but we need as many people onboard as possible to make this event work well.

Although its very very rare that people want to create calendar events, it would be nice if the option was available to create them in other boards. If Im not mistaken, an event in the calendar is actually a message in a forum, right? Since I believe most people generally only read one or two forums, mostly their favorite system, having all calendar events only in the events forum meens its easy to overlook things. The Jaguar community especially, I think, tends to be quite seperate, and I for one never leave the Jag board except occasionally to look in on the ST board. An even better idea, tho probably much harder to do, would be to establish crosslinking, so a post can exist in two boards at once, for example, Events and the System(s) related to it. Since I guess each post is saved in the forums "folder" or other logical subdivision on the hard drive, the easiest way to do a crosslink is to add a special type of post to the secondary forums, and a little code at the top of the post in the primary forum to mentio which posts its been crossposted to. Oh, and while I've (hopefully) got the attention of Alex or Albert, I'd like to point out this post which you might have missed.

Has nobody considered that maybe the poster knows very little about what he's selling? Lets not flame the guy for making an honest mistake. Infact lets not flame him at all, this isnt the JI1, I like the way this board is very polite and well mannered.
