  1. It's probably just the RF cable, which is horrible on all systems (Do you remember the snow and ghosting all over analog broadcast tv? urgh!) and especially bad on the Jaguar. I'm not sure why the Jag was particularly bad, maybe they used cheap components, or didn't shield them well enough or something, but they're bad compared to "normal" which is bad, so...

Get an AV / S video cable, or better yet a scart cable if your tv will take scart input.

  2. So I ordered a VGA M/F extension cable with all the pins. When it is plugged into my Jaguar it won't even turn on. Can I rip out some of the cable's pins to make it even with the regular Jag controller to any benefit?

Not really. A quick search on google images pulls up this, which (if accurate, I'm assuming it is) shows that a number of pins are often connected together as a common ground.

Unfortunately some of those pins include pins 7 and 9, which are +5v and GND. Since that 5v pin connects directly to the Jag's main 5v supply rail, you're creating a short circuit that's draining all the power of the system, as well as possibly causing damage if you keep it connected for long.

That cable will only ever be good for connecting monitors together. While the plugs are the same, the way they're connected together is not.

  3. Project Tempest supports some CD games (but doesn't run the CD BIOS intro).

Virtual Jaguar should run the CD BIOS, but it doesn't seem to boot games.

And Dio's T2K emulator (you can find it on Jeff Minter's forum) emulates the VLM.

Like I said I only really want a couple of good grabs of the cd bios loading screens (ideally the one with colour washing over the whole screen in bands) to use as a background to something else, but analog capture by composite video out isn't going to quite cut it.

I'll give VJ a try and see if I can get it to run, thanks.

  4. Hiya, can someone point me to a decent guide to setting up a Jag emulator with cd-bios. I'm trying to capture some crisp images of the CD startup / loading screens, and analoge video capture just isn't going to cut it.

  5. I would just add that you shouldn't refund him anything until the item is returned to you and in your hand. If he already claimed that it wasn't delivered when it was, what's to stop him taking your refund and keeping the cable?

Oops, just realised how old this thread is, sorry.

  6. I'm hoping someone in the uk (or at least europe) will pop up instead, the shipping would be cheaper and faster for a start, but I'll shoot him an email if nobody else shows up.

  7. Hiya, before I go to the effort of trying to find a cheap source for prom chips, finding someone with a burner, etc etc, I thought I'd ask here if anyone has or can easily produce BJL ROM's for sale, and how much they'd want for one chip (inc postage to the UK).

    Thanks.

  8. There were two runs. The ones with the black rubber keys are slightly earlier - and the ones with grey keys are slightly later (Procontrollers have grey keys too).

Really? I always figured the grey ones were earlier. If you open them up and look at the internal differences, the black ones seem to me a better (and cheaper) design. The only significant difference is in the d-pad construction, but even then it's not really that significant from a playing point of view, just a different style of construction.

  9. After this first batch is complete and shipped out, the price will increase back to $40! So get in on this preorder while you can!

At $25 usd each, I'll take two sets, one to use one to keep minty fresh.

  10. I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Skunkboard yet. While it doesn't come with a cartridge shell, I've seen several people put one on them.

Also there's the Atari Flash Cart.

Possibly not much demand for either label, but I'd say there are more Skunks out there than there are BSG's, so you might as well include that at least.

  11. The other clue is that Atari 4MB boards only have half the SRAM positions populated - home-upgraded ones can have any weird layout as Atari put a ton of jumpers on the board to configure the board for different types and sizes of SRAM. The Jag can only address 6MB of cartspace anyway, as you said :)

I know you're not that active with the scene any more, but would it be possible for you to contribute some of your knowledge on alpines before you go? I'd love to know what some of those jumpers and unpopulated chips are meant to do. For example you say there are lots of possible sram configurations... does that mean it might be possible to get cheaper, commercially available sram chips? Part of the problem with upgrading alpines to 4MB has been that nobody can get hold of the chips any more for a reasonable price. Could different chips be used that are available?

  12. They do indeed look very nice. Would it be possible to get a preview of the entire set? maybe a little more info on how easy they are to stick down? That's an awkward shape to stick anything flat too, I'm amazed that you've got them looking as good as that photo shows.

  13. I'm only going to answer a few points since I really don't want this thread to get locked. As I said, if you want to carry this on, make a new thread for it and I'll argue with you till I'm blue in the face, but neither of us is likely to change our minds so there isn't much point.

After which, you had a post that you have since edited that basically said that if the games aren't commercially available any more (meaning what, exactly?) then it is your *right* to play them for free to determine if you want to get them.

If you look again you'll see I edited that post precisely 1 minute after I made it. I don't remember why, probably to clear up a typo or clarify something.

Due to certain people repeatedly editing their posts to retcon threads, AA has not allowed post editing more than 1 hour after posting for some time now. Please check your facts before you make any more baseless accusations against me.

But, what you're missing is that it isn't the blacklist magically not making things work.

If the blacklist didn't exist, the beta that you tried playing would have still not worked.

No, it was quite clear (and I thought I was clear about telling you) that the skunk came back with a "not allowed" message, which, correct me if I'm wrong, can only be because it was tripping the blacklist.

Which maybe here's the thing -- maybe you *aren't* arguing for piracy, and you're fine with us not wanting to run pirated games on it.

So, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that I misinterpreted you and that you weren't arguing for piracy.

Thank you. I was neither arguing for or against piracy. My own views are just that, and well stated before I hope, but my point in posting anything was that the anti-piracy measures (as with almost all technical measures designed to counter piracy) backfired for me on the one and only time I tried to use the device, and that gave me a negative impression of it.

Also ovalbugman, this has to be the funniest thing I've heard you say, and you've summed up perfectly one of the problems the "community" has had for faaaar too long.

What does this tell me, logically? -that for the Jaguar scene specifically, far too much emphesis, time & work is placed and given to the abhorrence of these lurking shadowy plundering Buccaneers.

  14.

Good luck with the auctions.. those Alpine boards have a very interesting and authenticated history.. defin collectors pieces

    Nick

Oh, there's a story attached? Is it one worth telling? Would it affect the prices? If so, best to speak up now & get the best bids possible on them :)

The 4Mb one (which I didn't see listed, so maybe he's going to keep it?) if I'm not mistaken, was once owned by James "Purple" Hampton, producer of AvP.

The other one (the 2Mb prototype) I think was acquired from Nick H at one of the JagFests, attached to one of the JagCD protos, but I can't comment much further on its history.

  15. It's not "common sense" to pirate software and claim that your stance is correct.

I'm not going to get into this any more out of respect for Tursi and the Skunk.

If you insist on trying to blacken my name over this, please do so in a separate thread dedicated to that purpose.
