Dunno if I have that Antic doc, but a lot about the 5200 is described in one article "Transporting Atari Computer Programs to the 5200". The standard doc for the 8-bit is the "Atari System Reference Manual", but "Mapping the Atari" has some good info too. I've chopped out all the 8-bit specific stuff and am adding in the 5200 stuff (there is a lot more progress in my working copy than what is shown online). Most of what I have left is finishing the rewrite of the display list chapter to include some other stuff (like those weird screen modes we were messing with a while back).. the rest of it will be a lot of cut & paste & changing addresses from 800 -> 5200. Once area that I would like to know more about is how the everything with the keypad works. We already found one difference between 8-bit & 5200 not in the docs.. I'm sure there are others. One thing that is strange: after switching the active keypads, keypad input doesn't work for a little while. No idea whats wrong there. calamari

This is because the 6502 doesn't allow register,register compares (or adds, subtracts, etc, for that matter).. the only thing I can think of that allows reg-reg are transfers (copy/move).. like tya, tay, txa, etc, even then you cant do txy or tyx directly. You also can't do memory-memory compares. You can compare a register vs memory (of different kinds.. zeropage, x/y indexed, indirect, etc), or a register vs an immediate.. so as you found you can do: CMP #$01 ;does A=1? (reg vs immed) Which is isn't any good for this situation, I agree.. but you can also do: CMP $EE ;does A=the value at location $EE? (reg vs memory) The second way works well for what you are trying to do. Let's see it in 5200BAS code: A=SCORE1 IF A>SCORE2 THEN:GOSUB STUFF:END IF As a sidenote, you'll want to avoid > if possible (comparing with > and <= takes two instructions vs. one instruction for < and >=, see the IF entry in the Command Reference).. so I'd suggest this instead: A=SCORE2 IF A<SCORE1 THEN:GOSUB STUFF:END IF I'm assuming that you will have it call different subroutines depending on who wins, so the code might look like this: A=SCORE2 IF A<SCORE1 THEN GOSUB STUFF ELSE GOSUB STUFF2 END IF You could also use Y instead of A in the above code.. or X.. whatever you prefer. Working on it a little bit. School has kept me pretty busy.. I recently got the sprites working a bit better and made a to-do list (so I know what to work on when I have the time/energy). My progress might be slow, but the project is NOT dead. calamari

I've never played that game.. but once I get 5200 Solitaire and 2600 Radial Pong done my next planned project is 5200 Moria (AD&D style rpg, top view, text graphics). This was a favorite of mine growing up. The lack of pretty graphics allowed my imagination to fill in the details so I could really get into it. Later myself (and a friend) figured out how to hack the save file to get better stats and keep/improve items, which kinda spoiled the game, but that was still fun One other Moria exploit involved adding colors to the game with a TSR (old MS-DOS program that ran in the background). This was one of my first assembly language projects.. one of the main reasons I learned ASM was for making TSRs. I guess the knowledge is pretty outdated now, but it made me learn a LOT about the details of how things worked. Definitely worthwhile. calamari

On the 2600, joystick is much easier (IMO). It's either on/off.. so you can test for that and be done. With the paddles you are dealing with how much it's turned.. I had joystick code in Radial Pong but it has since been removed.. no one wanted a pong game controlled by a joystick I added the paddle code and I can hardly control the thing now, at least on the emu calamari

Ahh, so the extended use of 5200BAS serves as a stepping stone to harder drugs like ASM.. This is good to hear calamari

Also got my copy of Koffi: Yellow Kopter today. Looks nice (label has rounded corners & straight edges). Manual printing is nice. My manual could have had the edges chopped to be even, but a paper cutter will take care of that easily. And speaking of the manual, Kalamari is in there.. That's COOL!!! Haven't played it yet, hopefully I'll get a chance to soon. Great job & thanks, calamari
