1. Thanks. Also wanted to address the minor DB9 plug mod that Matt mentioned. With Overdrive, because of the number of connections, I use generic Sega-compatible cords. With Vectrosis, which uses fewer connections, I'm able to use generic Atari-compatible cords, and these fit the Vec perfectly with no plug modification necessary.

  2. Cool review, thanks Matt!

Yes, as noted on the included Overdrive sheet with warranty info...

"Hyperchase relies on the spring-return feature of the Vectrex controller joystick. Because of this, you will need to return the steering wheel within the range of the center position just following a crash along the side of the road. Otherwise, the car will continue to crash to that side. Similarly, if you play Hyperchase with the joystick and hold the stick to the left or right after a crash, the car will also continue to crash. It is simply a characteristic of the game that you will quickly adust to."

The decision was made not to add a spring-return feature because Overdrive would then ONLY be completely compatible with Hyperchase.

VectRace, Vaboom, Spike's Water Balloons, Purgatory, and Night Trucker do not rely on spring-return.

    Thanks again Matt, enjoy!

Note to buyers...shipping them out as quickly as I build them! Hang on, they're on their way! :)

  3. Pole Position is technically analog as well. But the difference between Pole Position and Hyperchase is that most people find Hyperchase to be almost unplayable using the standard controller. The Overdrive Controller makes Hyperchase an excellent playing experience! Pole Position, on the other hand, already plays very well with the standard controller. With Overdrive, you have to turn the wheel quite a bit to begin to enter the analog zone on Pole Position. So technically it's compatible, and does provide a more authentic experience because of the steering wheel, but might not necessarily be "better" than playing it on the standard controller. I somehwhat apprehensively added Pole Position to the compatibility list after being bombarded with emails telling me that it is, in fact, setup with analog steering. I checked it and sure enough it is, but it's not setup like Hyperchase at all.

Compatible homebrews! VectRace (another racing game) and Vaboom by Ronen Habot are both free to download and use on VecFlash or VecMulti, or to make your own cartridge. Spike's Water Balloons by John Dondzila, is also available for free! Links are on my website.

If you're considering purchasing Overdrive, keep in mind it's currently about a 3-week wait on any new orders. Thanks!

  4. Thanks ComputerSpaceFan. It is being released a bit later than expected, but my intention is to create a game that is above and beyond anything I've ever done on the Vectrex, a game that many people will call their personal favorite. That's my goal. There will be a couple of new images added this week to my Warrior page, displaying two of the new Warriors that will be in the single-player game. This, of course, is what's taking all of the extra time. With many new Warriors to fight and each one having unique attributes, it's been a lot of work. But totally worth it : ) Thanks for hanging in there everybody, your patience is greatly appreciated!

  5. you have to buy at least ONE release from Fury Unlimited. good stuff!

Thanks for the mention ; )

I released Sundance just 1 week ago! Check it out:

    http://www.furyunlimited.com/_sgg/m1_1.htm

It's an extremely accurate re-creation of the Cinematronics classic. Several game modes, better sun graphics/animation, 1 or 2 players.

This is my first game with a simultaneous 2-player mode (2 controllers needed).

I released War of the Worlds in June. Another Cinematronics remake with some updated game play.

    http://www.furyunlimited.com/_sgg/m1m2_1.htm

At the beginning of the year I released Zantis, which is loosely based on the raster game Spiders.

    http://www.furyunlimited.com/_sgg/m1m3_1.htm

Last year, I released a series of games, the Sector-X trilogy: 3D Sector-X, Sectis, and Continuum.

And years ago, Royal 21, 3D Lord of the Robots, Vector 21, I Cyborg, and War of the Robots.

Warrior will be my next release:

    http://www.furyunlimited.com/_sgg/m1m1_1.htm

The following games are currently available for puchase:

    I, Cyborg

    Royal 21

    Sectis

    Continuum

    Zantis

    War of the Worlds

    Sundance

  6. If it is loaded with Vectrex files, then I suggest cleaning the contacts on the cartridge and trying it again. I've had carts that have sat around for a while also not function, resulting in a boot to Mine Storm. A quick cleaning solves the problem. There are various techniques but I use an actual contact cleaning liquid. Good luck.

  7. Yes it is. Good find. Now, add a headphone jack for some ear buds, CF slot for games and Bang! The new Virtual Boy. That video shows the proof of concept. Looks like it would work to me. What do you guys think?

I'd be interested in a project like this. I've done two 3D games for Vectrex, and I think that a self-contained headset console that was able to

improve upon the Virtual Boy would be great.

The Virtual Boy does 3D very well, but the all red display, and the need for a tripod support are the two areas that could benefit with an improved

console. A smaller, lighter unit that can be worn on the head is obviously ideal.

  8. Doing a modern version of a Virtual Boy really wouldn't be that hard and you could even make it much more portable. All it would take is to modify the view master idea. Which BTW, was done once before. The only difference is this time, use modern LCD screens in stead of the etched LCD's from the 1980's. Basically, a modern version of this:These worked very well. I had two of them up until recently. I always wounder why they never update the idea. It would be soooo simple.

Not mine, but this is kind of what you're talking about...

  9. Hi. Sorry for the confusion on this.

I will be re-releasing 3D Sector-X later this year in cartridge form. The game will be identical to the first run, but will not include an engraved metal box lid. The lid will have a label like most of my other Vectrex releases. In turn, the price will be $5 lower, direct difference in cost for labeled vs engraved lids. The re-release will begin with Cartridge #101, as the first run was exactly 100 cartridges.

3D Lord of the Robots will be released as a freeware rom during the holiday season (November). It's my holiday gift for Vec fans of 2010. In 2009 I

released a freeware rom of Vector 21.

    3D Vec Trek

    Announced

  10. As a fellow vector fanatic, I am BEGGING you to continute devlopment of your 3d games. It was with profound sadness that I read your email announcing that you had given 3d up. :( In fact, I think I will play a few rounds of 3d Lord of the Robots right now, if I can see through the tears...

Quite a few people were unhappy about this, so I'm doing another 3D game now (+ a non-3D game to be released next year). I just updated my website. Thanks for your continued support of Vectrex homebrews!

    George

  11. Superior topic!

    Arcade:

    Space Wars

    Cosmic Chasm

    Rip-Off

    Star Trek

    Space Duel

    Vectrex:

    Space Wars

    Cosmic Chasm

    Rip-Off

    Bedlam

    Web Wars

    Mine Storm

I, Cyborg (yes it's my game, but it's my best so far!)

And I've gone well over 5 here, but there's no stopping

    a vector fanatic!!!

  12. When unable to get a license to a particular game, which do you think was the better approach, copying it and calling the game something else or making a game with some of the same features, but with its own identity?

A great example is my particular favorite 2600 game Chopper Command. Bob Whitehead did not just reproduce Defender with a Helicopter. Instead he took some of the best elements from Defender and made an impressive and unique game with its own variations and playstyle. This made this game a big hit.

Likewise, if you take something like Mousetrap. Well its just Pac-Man with a couple of added features. A better example would have been Minesweeper on the Vectrex which is really nothing more than Asteroids. Still both Mousetrap and Minesweeper can be enjoyable games.

But, what do you think was the better approach in this sort of copywright dodging?

    -Ray

This is a great subject. I have to say though, Mine Storm on Vectrex is much more fun than the original Asteroids in my opinion. It's faster, and there are several types of mines which allow for a varied game playing experience.

  13. George:

You are so humble!  Your two homebrew Vectrex games are cool!  I can hardly wait to see what you have been programming for the Vectrex recently!

Thanks Rob. I'm still working on it...progressing s-l-o-w-l-y. I know I've announced everywhere that it will be out by the end of this year, but probably not. I may still release a small game in December, and then this larger project will surface early-to-mid 2006.

    George

  14. There isn't, of course, anything stopping anyone hence however from making their own cart version of a game and selling it because the ROM is available to get over the internet, but you've at least covered that angle in your page.

As for the CD argument on the front of RG... that's why it there, it's a ploy in general by publishers to entice people to buy. My point is though, would more people buy that issue because Vectrex ROMs are on there compared to if they were not? A question we can probably never find the answer to.

    891530

On the ROM issue... a person really cannot make a cartridge of a game and sell it. If someone decided to start manufacturing Vectrex Star Castle cartridges (as an example) and tried to sell them anywhere public, they would be put out of business very quickly. Same is true for any other copyrighted ROM, assuming that it's noticed by the author or any number of Vectrex fans.

The CD... I personally believe that if you offer more features (magazine + CD vs. magazine only) you'll have more customers overall. It certainly won't hurt sales, anyway ;)

    George

  15. I don't think that's been discussed yet actually. Are you okay for yours to be used George? Anything generally available to download from people's sites I figured would be okay (seeing as they are freely available) although some don't work with emulators (such as Protector) but could be used with VecFlash for example.

To be honest, I don't know when the deadline for submitting to the cover CD is. I can go ask...

    890851

Actually, I don't allow it. I have it posted on my site:

    http://geovector.tripod.com/_sgt/m2m3_1.htm

The reason is that once a compilation like that goes out, a small

percentage of the recipients will assume "public domain". I don't

know why this happens, but it happens. I've read numerous times,

for example, on the Digital Press forum that the GCE Vectrex ROMs

are all public domain, which of course is not true. The Vectrex

multi-cart completely infringes on all of the copyrights of the original

games. At $75, I dare say that profits are made on the multi-cart.

If it were distributed "at-cost" there would be no problem. The

VecFlash, on the other hand, is legit. Anyway, once "public domain"

is assumed, it opens the door to all types of problems with pirated

    cartridges and the like.

Of all the GCE and homebrew ROMs, only V-Frogger is in the public

domain (put there by the author of the game). I would say that you

need to ask for the authors' permission on all of the other ROMs.

If the CD is listed as being "free", you're still not off the hook because

you normally need permission for free redistribution (this is what Jay Smith

has granted, but each homebrew author must decide for their own work).

Plus, it can be argued that the CD, even if free, enticed the consumer

into purchasing the magazine, thus becoming a part of the sale.

I'm still looking forward to the article, though it's a shame that it's been

chopped down in size. I know that your original version was complete,

and that the sizing limitations were inevitable.
