VIC 20 rainbow colors in border during warmup

Yep - specifically UE8. Mine were MOS branded though, so from what I've read not very reliable. I replaced all 3 while I was at it. -
VIC 20 rainbow colors in border during warmup
jc13 replied to BriGuy_the_AtariGuy's topic in Commodore 8-bit Computers
I recently had a similar symptom, but mine didn't clear up as it warmed up - it would lock up completely. I did a couple of troubleshooting things at once, but I believe it came down to one of the original MOS 245s because it fell apart as I was removing it to troubleshoot. Once I put in a new one everything looked good. I didn't really investigate how/if it could have been related, but the VIC's been stable ever since. -
Atari800MacX Version 5.4.4 Released - Bugfix
jc13 replied to atarimac's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'm not 100% sure this is a bug, but I noticed that if I have the SIO patch enabled when using U1MB and Side2, the ATRs are missing from the loader. With SIO patch disabled, U1MB/Side2 loader will list the ATRs. -
Atari800MacX 5.4.1 Released - Bug Fix H: and D: Patches

Awesome! Thanks for looking at that. I've noticed something strange on Basketball as well. Looks like the computer controlled player can't seem to shoot very well. Looks like it could possibly be a timing issue of some sort since the player doesn't hold the ball long enough to take the shot. Same xex works ok under Altirra. -
Atari800MacX 5.4.1 Released - Bug Fix H: and D: Patches

I saw that thread too, but I was thinking that the lock up described was that the birds didn't fly. The XEX I have that works under Altirra and the ROM from Atarimania both run the intro screen fine, but the game won't start. Is that what you are seeing? BTW, stereo pokey wasn't enabled on my install. I'll see if I can find the 5200 variant. Thanks! -
Atari800MacX 5.4.1 Released - Bug Fix H: and D: Patches

Thanks to atarimac for pointing me in the right direction... Got this working well, but ran into one other issue trying to get my favorite game Bounty Bob Strikes Back working. I've seen other threads about problems running this under emulators and eventually found a copy that worked well under Altirra, but it seems to have an issue on Atari800MacX. Basically it just won't start the game - the birds fly, but no response to keyboard or (emulated) joystick. Anyone else care to give this a try? -

I have it running on Big Sur, but I'm seeing some strangeness with the os roms and directories settings occasionally changing to previous values. Seems to be happening after I try to get the U1MB / Side2 expansions to work. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong there, but after adding the U1MB rom file and selecting an XL machine with U1MB it crashes. I tried running the it from the terminal to see if I could get any additional output, but all I got was a seg fault. Anyone else seeing this behavior? -

Hey Thom - I was working on making one of these to play around with and haven't found a part number for the pins themselves - can you share that info if you have it? Thanks - John -
I have it updated, but am traveling at the moment. I’ll post it as soon as I get back to my computer.
-
Thanks for checking - I was able to create the couple of parts I was working with, so no need to go through backups!

Got it - thanks for the quick response!

I don't have any particular application in mind, but I was curious if it was possible to control the S0/S1 (or M0/M1) lines from within the OS or BASIC (i.e. outside of the U1MB setup screens). I'm guessing there would need to be some sort of driver/handler to do this, but couldn't find an answer.

Hello Ivop - if you still have this and it's not too much trouble, I'd like to get a copy of it if you don't mind. It seems like it may have been attached to the post at one time, but I don't see it anymore. Thanks - John

Thanks for the feedback on this - all valid points. Not sure if all 600XLs are like mine, but it really wasn't too bad removing the shields - the top/bottom shields were held together with the bent over tabs you mentioned and maybe 4-5 screws holding it together and to the bottom case. At any rate, I already had it in my head that I wanted to try to get the shields back on and it actually worked out pretty well. The main issues were getting the vertical headers for the MMU cable low enough, having the older U1MB with the right angle headers so I didn't have to desolder too much, and replacing the vertical header with the HALT/RESET, etc. signals to a right angle header and flipping it to the underside of the board. As you mentioned, I needed a longer cable for the ROM adapter, but it all went back together pretty easily.

I was just working on this today and this is my planned location (RF modulator spot). I pulled an older U1MB from my 800xl that had right angle headers and swapped the smaller connector (at the back) with two rows of vertical pin headers (with the plastic bit underneath and the pin height adjusted so the connector made contact properly. As others mentioned, removing the strain relief on the connector was also required. I need to figure out another support standoff or two, but it looks like this might fit completely under the RF shield. Also, I'll likely have to modify the headers for the HLT/Reset, etc. lines since the supplied wires will stand too tall.

Here you go. I used a bench vice with some spacers to crimp them on. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/274004-sophia-revc-dvi-board/page-7?do=findComment&comment=4097750

Another BTW, the jumper setting image on page 3 is reversed, but otherwise a great compilation of all the info scattered about. Thanks!

This was the forum post I followed to test mine - you basically end up bridging two pins on the 4050 which basically bypasses it... I still went ahead and replaced the 4050 - they are not expensive at all. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/139202-6-switcher-left-player-always-firing/?do=findComment&comment=1683197

Like Banquo said above, I’ve had this happen on a few 6 switchers and it’s likely the hex buffer (CD4050) that’s failed. There was a workaround that you can use to verify and you could leave it like that or just replace the chip. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have this one, but I'd have to unbox it to get one inside the shielding and I'm not at home until tomorrow.
