What to do with modded 810 and 1050 drives
Melonking replied to Melonking's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Does that mean you could turn the disk over for a second 180k side? I went looking last night and found this box which seems to cast more light on the switches, but it raises new questions. The black box described is not installed, its here, so ether it was installed and removed, or never completed, or the switches are for a totally unrelated mod. -

The switches at the front appear to intercept with ones going to a little device above the drive and also the wired plugged into the back of the lower board. That seems like it could match what your suggesting. Is there any risk to disks having data damaged here? And also, excuse my ignorance, but whats the purpose of switching drives? Also while on the topic of the 1050, Iv heard something about a Happy 1050 mod, that allows 360kb DD disks? Would anything here interfere with potentially adding that? (I have some blank DD disks but nothing older, so it would be handy) -
Hello forum! I have been cleaning up an old atari set that I got a few years ago, it all seems fine, but the 2 disk drives have been modified in some way, and Im not really sure how to proceed with them. A bunch of switches have been added, and there's quite a bit of rewiring going on inside. I'm a bit concerned if I take them apart to clean them a doggy bit of soldering will go and Ill have no way to fix it. On top of that I have no idea what the switches do, so I don't know if they could damage disks. If anyone recognizes whats going on here or has any suggestions about what I should do to sort out these drives let me know! 1050: 810:
