Yeah I'm curious on this shift also?
Yeah, I'm a Christian, and not even remotely interested in Amico.

In my opinion their initial criticisms of the system were fair, but after T.T and the Amico bunch came after them everything went downhill. Now they are certainly biased but T.T has left a considerable portion of the gaming community alienated with the way he responds to critics and how he unnecesarily bashed Nintendo.
What was the bashing of Nintendo? I missed that.

I surmise that if Atari does not get a certain amount of new preorders, none of the backer systems will be filled. They need to get 2X the orders before they can scale to cut costs. Unfortunately they actually have a chance to leap forward due to the recent news that the Amico is nowhere near anything that is ready to ship. They have an add for Ziprecruter (sp) for a position and the description of what they need is someone who can actually BUILD the entire system. So what the fudge do they have now? Most of what they have shown is mobile games, this is ouya 2.0 with a Turbo.

It's been a long day, let me see if I can process this:
1) Unspecified release date of the system, 4 months away. I seem to think we've seen this before.
2) Piece of software was unannounced that the original developer may or may not actually be aware of (Tempest 4K anyone), and isn't what most people would call a killer app?
Yeah, it's the beginning of a new quarter alright. Time to remind people you have a product, you know, in case anyone wants to buy your company (hint, hint).
No disrespect to the makers of the Missile Command game. I can't make a video game, and maybe this one is quite fun. If I'm buying a new console, this wouldn't be a justification.
Supporters are happy, and I guess they're getting closer to the finish line. But I have to imagine most aren't going to think the race was worth the prize.

Yep. Making games isn't a cheap business. There is a reason that so many titles go multi-plat; Developers are businesses first, as you can't make games without making money.
When Nintendo released the WiiU in 2012, it sold around 425,000 units in that first month. Despite being the successor to one of the hottest gaming consoles of all time, and having a name like Nintendo attached to it, all that wasn't enough to keep 3rd party devs on board. They focused their resources elsewhere, and the WiiU hobbled along until it became a footnote. The VCS over it's lifetime won't even manage a sliver of the first month's worth of WiiU sales.
11-12k is nothing in this business. It's beyond a flop. Even the failed Ouya did better than that initially to the tune of 50-60k units. Atari has done nothing to fuel sales beyond that, and when people do finally get their little underpowered PC box, no one is suddenly going to scream "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" for something that can barely get CoD to work. Especially when you'll have the PS5, XBSX, Switch and even the Amico to compete with. No major studio is going to commit any kind of resource to it, it's just that simple. Nostalgia can't cover up for incompetence, and that+lawsuits is all Atari has left to peddle.
How many units did Dreamcast sell? 10 million? And was still considered a commercial failure.

You're not wrong. And the looks of it are actually the least of my reservations about the project.
Kind of taboo to say on this page, but I agree. Doesn't appear to be a scam, but uh...hmmm. Not really sure I agree with TT about the niche it's supposed to fill.

When they get the inevitable "It is with great regret.." email it will be
FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUJI!!!!!I think most of the anger will be directed at us. As though us internet poop throwers somehow have the power to derail the comeback of a video game pioneer with memes and snide posting.
Occam's Razor would suggest that this project never had a chance in hell from the beginning due to the history of shady behavior held by Atari's current owners, and the fact there really isn't widespread interest in a product like this. But forget common sense. It was definitely the memes and trolling that killed the Atari VCS.

A little confused here. Based on the last batch of videos, the hardware looks done, although underwhelming. What's the problem now?
The shutdown obviously bought them some time. But now they can't even say for sure it will be out in another 6.5 months? So back in November when they said "Weeks, not months," that was obviously incorrect, since they're now effectively saying "Months, not weeks...hopefully not years."
Not sure why people continue to support this mess.

It is having issues running an 8 year old game. That's just...sad
I usually have a hard time noticing framerate drops, but that's impossible to miss. Some weird stuff going on with the backgrounds at times also.
The COD Warzone video was embarrassing. Again, framerate is a joke. Reminds me of the Xbox One version of PUBG. Other than that, it seems to be running in very low detail mode. Why would Atari show this and think it would help their case?

I’d love to proved wrong, but I believe they have used backers funds as seed money to pay wages (remembering they didn’t pay Tin Giant) and startup all their other ridiculous projects ... all in the hope that they will be able to chase enough $s to bring it all together ... a lot of their delaying is exactly that ... hoping they can talk shit long enough to fund the 10,000 units ... I don’t believe they have the funds to do it all in one go, hence the freebie units to potential investors etc. All IMHO of course.
That seems like a pretty likely scenario. It's hard to tell what's going on in their minds, but it seems like releasing a low tech video game console would be a lot simpler than introducing a new cryptocurrency, or any of their other wacky ventures. Something's clearly wrong here, but most of us figured that out a few years ago. But hey, if Atari hasn't said they've scamming us, I guess it's all good.

You can't undercut something that doesn't exist.
The fact Atari gave the green light for this thing, knowing it would interest the same group of people the VCS is targeting seems to be more evidence the VCS is no where near completion. Afterall, it wouldn't make sense to sell a 99 dollar model when you supposedly are going to release a 300 dollar model that is only marginally better. It kinda reminds me of the 32X debacle, except in reverse.

The TurboGrafx Mini was complete. The VCS is not. I would expect Q4 2020 or Q1 2021 at this point.
I really don't think the comparison makes sense.
If they had 500 systems to send out to developers, I'd say it was pretty darn close to completion. I'll grant it may not have been 100 percent, but there shouldn't have been much left to finish if they had systems to send to third parties.
Certain electronic devices, like Xbox One controllers are in short supply, so I don't have an issue with the actual hardware being AWOL, but if people can work from home, it stands to reason they would have SOME kind of progress to show on the software side since the hardware is all but finished.
Does anyone else think it's strange we don't know who those developers are? Usually when a new console is announced, the creator is all about letting everyone know who's on board. If Atari was sending out 500 systems to developers, that means they should have at least 50 third party companies on board, right? And we don't know a single one? That's not something there would be any reason for secrecy. But, oh well.

Behold fellow haters! Atari has released the AtariBox!
We should all bow our heads in shame as the company reclaims their birthright as Masters of the Gaming Universe.
Of course, there are other options out there more competitive on the price, but since many a shill has claimed they just want something with an Atari logo on it, then the above should do the trick+allow you to "play Atari games" via HDMI and any of the computing options a VCS could do..
(H/T to PlaysWithWolves for the discovery)
Honestly, this is what the VCS should have been in the first place. This would have sold fairly decently, especially if they found a way to package a couple classic controllers with it. No one wanted an Atari box that could play PC games in low detail mode, or watch Netflix. This would have filled the nostalgia thirst nicely. This might interest some people, but for most, Atari has burned all their good will.

It sounds like it's the same update except now they're treating as a bigger deal than last time. Atari's post above really tells us all we need to know about how close this is to release - Atari has absolutely no idea.

If anyone still cares, there was an exciting update today to get backers' hopes up unnecessarily. MASS PRODUCTION (of 500 units) IS UNDERWAY!
Notice, it says the Indiegogo header page has been updated to show the system is officially in the production stage. Excellent! Let's take a look!

LOL. Werner's making a list, and checking it twice! For those of you not on his scumbag list, what's your excuse? But yeah, I'll double down on my scum baggery. In spite of COVID 19, Polymega is shipping units to beta testers. The virus is absolutely a very convenient excuse to cover Atari's incompetence. They've been stalling for time since the get go, and this pandemic gives them a blank check to drag it out indefinitely.

Check out David Halliday's epic meltdown on IGG. I don't want to screen shot it here because it has a few f-bombs in it.
It's gone, which means Atari is monitoring the page. But they didn't respond to Scroggins' post, so clearly that means production is starting soon.

Isn't this one of the people that would go after anyone in the IGG comments if they were asking for updates/news/etc.?
He's definitely one of the feistier supporters. I get it that they want info, but at some point you have to accept you got played. This system being released this year was a long shot as it was. With the disruption to the economy and supply chain, they might as well forget it. If they EVER release this system, I'll be shocked.

New Atari Console that Ataribox?
in Atari 2600

I have 4 kids who play games. I've made it pretty clear to them what the rules are. If Nintendo releases some horrific Leisure Suit Larry/Splatterhouse crossover, and my kids get a hold of it, the failure is mine.
Besides all that, I think TT is really shooting the system in the foot with this approach. If they're relying on the brand name, they have a very narrow market of people in their 40's and 50's. People much younger than that aren't going to be interested in spending money to play these games.
