  1. Nevermind, I found out that there were two pegs in the center of the long sides that were held together by friction only. Gentle pressure with a flat blade screwdriver got the pieces to seperate.

  2. Does anyone know how to disassemble an Atari tracball?  I have removed the screws from the four corners but something is silll holding upper and lower cases together.  I need to give it a thorough cleaning.

  3. The 512K memory upgrade, operating in the 256K mode will allow an 800XL equipped with Omniview80 to run the 80 column version of Atari Writer Plus. I also have a 1200XL that has been modified with the 800XL OS and Omniview 80 that will run AW+80.

After posting this I found where Nezgar had posted similar information.

  4. Thank you for that file.  When I configure the RAM to 256K the 800XL acts just like a 130XE. I can run a Newell modified version of Atari Writer Plus that was written for 80 Columns using OmniView80 and the very old SpeedScript character font.  The Rambo and Wiztronics upgrades don't use separate Antic access and the program will not run with them.  The Newell 256KXL memory upgrade will run the program but they are very rare. I have only had two since I have been tinkering with Ataris. I still have one and I sold one. (BAD MOVE). If I can get this memory upgrade to work on the 1200XL I will have IMO the perfect Atari machine.

  5. I have installed the 512K RAM upgrade in an 800XL.  I would like some help in using the commands to change the configuration from 512K to 256K.  I have downloaded the file containing the files and I have loaded the ATR onto a S-Drive.  I have even loaded the file on the 800XL.  That is where my success stops.  I do not know how to get out of the XDOS environment back to BASIC or to anywhere else.  I am not familiar with XDOS.  I have downloaded all of the information I could find with the DOS commands.  The only thing I have been able to do with the DOS is load the menu.

  6. I would like to get a Newell 256KXL memory upgrade for a 800XL. I would also be willing to trade an 800XL with a 512K memory upgrade  and supervideo 2.1 upgrade for an 800XL with the Newell upgrade.

  7. I bought another 1200XL on eBay for $150. Computer has good picture with composite video. Keyboard doesn't work. I suspect that a good cleaning will have everything working. I will connect the chroma, add 5V to the SIO, and probably do a Super Video 2.1 upgrade, and the 800XL conversion.

  8. In an earlier post I mentioned that I had performed the SuperVideo 2.1 upgrade to a 1200XL and it didn't work out.  I did go back over my work and I even reinstalled the parts that were taken out.  I did not use the old parts but installed new capacitors, resistors, etc.  When I finished, I still had no video so I went back to the SV 2.1 and performed all of the steps again.  NO VIDEO/NO BOOT Then I installed the UAV and everything works with the UAV just as it should.  I am attaching a picture just in case someone with SV 2,1 experience might take a look to see if there is anything obvious such as wrong part removed and/or replaced.1200XL MB2.jpg

  9. Two weeks ago I attempted the SV 2.1 upgrade on a 1200XL and when I finished, I could not get any video, no luma, no composite, no chroma.  I checked all my work for solder bridges, missed components etc and found nothing so I installed a UAV.  This week I started on another 1200XL and I went component by component and checked the video after every component.  Initially, I lost video when I removed CR20 so I replaced it.  I lost video again when I replaced R23 (180 OHM) with a 75 OHM resistor.  (The mod calls for a 120 OHM piggyback but the result of that would be 72 OHM)  I thought maybe if I finished the mod, the video would come back but it never did.  I then removed the 75 OHM and replaced it with a 200 (I don't have any 180s) and I got video back.  It is lousy video.  I am going to recheck my components to make sure that I didn't use an incorrect resistor somewhere.  Is anyone aware of any mistakes that were made in the written instructions.  I have successfully done this mod before but it has been several years.

  10. The UAV worked out great. I guess prefer the component by component method for the same reasons a person would choose to make a cake from scratch instead of using a mix. Another reason is that I usually buy these computers on eBay, refurbish, modify, repair, and upgrade them for resale. The cost of the components is probably less than $5 and I can resell them for less and still make enough profit to indulge my hobby.
