  1. Has anyone besides me had any problems with their assembled boards? I have done two and neither one is working. I am pretty sure that I have done something wrong but I can't see the problem. I have compared my work with a blowup of Manterola's pictures and nothing looks wrong. I also had a problem with one of my XF551 boards. I assembled two and only one works. I have examined all of the components and found nothing obviously wrong. I have checked solder joints, looked for solder brIdges, and even swapped out socketed chips all to no avail. I just wonder if it may be these old tired eyes and an unsteady hand that is the main problem.
  2. I have another 800XL motherboard that I have tested every IC on the board and they are all good but the computer boots to a blank blue screen. If I boot with a Star Raiders cart it sometimes makes some static like noise and then the screen goes completely black. I plan to eventually start checking voltages on pins but that is a job for a bad weather day or something.
  3. I ended up replacing the ICs mentioned earlier plus the GTIA, ANTIC, and that strange IC that in in a 16 pin socket but only has 4 pins on each side. Now everything is working.
  4. I just started troubleshooting a nonworking 800XL and started with memory chips. All of the memory chips were bad, the MMU was bad, and the BASIC and ROM were also bad. Before I replace a bunch of chips I would like to know if there is a likely cause for all of those chips being bad. I would hate to fry another set because I didn't know enough to check for a likely cause.
  5. I have used one with my system for several years and it has worked fine for me. I have the XEP 80 connected to one of the inputs and the chroma/luma connected to the other input. You can use one of the audio inputs as a video input as long as you match it up correctly on the monitor.
  6. David Young's version only works with a 130XE or with a 800XL with a Newell 256K upgrade. The upgrade has to be slightly modified by adding a switch to select between banked and main memory. I worked on that problem for several months until I just happened to purchase a 800XL with the said memory mod. Way too much trouble for the reward. Now I just use my 130XE.
  7. I don't know what is going on with this new format, but if I have lost the ability to view MY CONTENT and to find MY MESSAGES then the Forums will be too much trouble to even visit.

Both of these are available. You can click on the small speech bubble icon at the top to get to the Messenger. I will be making an easier to find text link near the top thst is more obvious. As for My Content, you'll find it under the "My Activity Streams" link near the top of the page. You can also customize these queries to suit your needs.

You are looking for My Activity Streams -> Content I Posted In and the word balloons in the top right.  At least copy/paste with screenshots works now:

  8. You can probably have some made at most "Trophy Shops". I had some 800XL and 130 XE labels made that way.
  9. I went back changed to a 5.25 EPROM and tried the board with a 5.25 drive and everything works. Evidently my EPROM has somehow gone bad.
  10. I removed the drive from the case and removed the heat sink to insure that nothing was grounding or shorting.
  11. After using the 551 board for 6 weeks to test different 3.5 drives; I decided that I would finally install it in a case with a 3.5 drive mech. After getting it in the case, I booted up with MYDOS and tried to format a disk. The process seemed to be working but then I got an error 163. The same thing happened with 3 other disks. After experimenting with several other disks, I found that it would only boot with MYDOS, I assumed that was because the MYDOS disk was double density. If I set the drive as drive 2, and boot drive 1 with DOS 2.5; the computer doesn't even acknowledge that there is a drive 2. Is this also because of the double density of the 3.5 drive. I have tried two different ROM B ICs and get the same results. I can't format a disk. I tried ten different disks and get the same results. Any suggestions.
  12. I hope some electronics savvy person will answer a few questions about an electrical schematic of the ANTIC chip. Why are the numbers not in the order of the pin numbers, what are do the labels inside the box represent (A15, AN1, RNMI etc)
  13. I know about the resistor swapping and I haven't tried piggy backing the RAM but I will.
  14. I have picked up another non working 130XE. When I turned it on I got a blank screen so I tried the Star Raiders Cart. This time when I turned it on, I got a blue and white screen with many characters appearing and disappearing on the screen. I thought this might be an antic problem so I removed the ANTIC put in a socket and tried another ANTIC. When I turned the computer on I got a green screen and it was the same with or without the Star Raiders Cart. I then looked at the old antic chip and noticed that I had pulled up the solder ring on pin 16. Does anyone know where the trace from Antic 16 connects. I will have to remove 3 or 4 chips to follow it. It appears to go completely underneath the OS ROM chip, I can't tell if it goes completely underneath the BASIC chip or not. I don't have any schematics for the 130XE.
  15. I finished a board but it isn't working. The computer acts as if there is no disk drive attached. I have triple checked my cable and it appears to be correct and all wires conducting. I think I will just build another board and cross check each step with the non working board to fi d my error.
  16. Does it matter to this drive whether or not a downloaded program is single density or double density? I have been trying to run a particular program that I know is double density and the ATR will not load from my Sdrive.
  17. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong with the Atariwriter+80. I have downloaded the zipped file, extracted the ATR, saved it to a micro card for the Sdrive, when I attempt to load the file the computer makes two of the clicking noises that indicate loading a disk then nothing. I have downloaded several other programs using the same process and on the same card that work flawlessly. I have tried on a 130XE and an 800XL with the same results. Any suggestions, is there another source besides the one in this forum (post#37). I know that others say they have successfully run the program on real hardware and Both of my computers will run the program from an actual disk drive but the ATR is giving me no joy.
  18. I just recently purchased my first side2 cart and don't know much about using it. I know I will have to read a lot of posts and watch some YouTube videos, but what goes into the top of the cart?
  19. I just tried a SF314 drive with a mixed parts board and the hyper XF B and it worked. Loaded DOS 2.5, loaded a file. I had tried it earlier with no success so I took the mech out of the case so I could see is the motor was turning at a reasonable speed. There must be some pinched wires of maybe a bare wire that is grounding on the case so I have some investigating to do.
  20. That is very good to know. I have almost finished my first board, just waiting for the cables to get here so I can wire them together.
  21. I know that my sample size is statistically insignificant, but I started buying 354s and 314s as soon as I knew the PCBs would be a reality and I bought 5 354s and 1 314. None of the 354s have a 34 pin connector; so I wouldn't expect to be able to use the board on a 354. I am going to try to fit a standard 3.5 inside a 354 case. If that is possible, my investment will not be completely wasted.
  22. I am hoping to use an old style SF354 with one of Dropchecks new boards. I have a 34 pin connector from an older version 551 that had individual wires instead of a flat cable. Has anyone verified or used this pinout?
  23. I have a SF354 that doesn't have a ribbon cable. It has a 14 wire connector. Is there an adaptor or a pinout that would allow me to use that model.
