  1. I should have given you a "thank you" for the info. I decided to go with the 32-in-1 on that 1200XL. Now I am working on another and I want to do the internal basic and use an eprom with the XL/XE OS and Omniview XL
  2. I am working on the mod that installs an 800XL OS and internal BASIC, the instructions say to pull out all of the jumpers except 11, 12, and 13. Since my 1200XL doesn't have jumpers in those places, am I supposed to insert jumpers in those places.
  3. OK, today I tried out the UAV with the jumpers positioned correctly. On my first test the colors were off when I booted pole position. The sky was green, the road was light gray, and the grass was dark green. When I booted with BASIC the screen was light blue and the text was dark blue. I tried another UAV and everything worked exactly as it should. So now I know that I have a defective UAV.
  4. Yes I adjusted the jumpers BACKWARDS, I was holding the UAV 180° out of position. Too late at night to do anything else so I will report on the oitcome tomorrow.
  5. I just installed a UAV in a 1200XL and the color is really bad. There is way too much black. After installation I inserted a Pole Position to check our the color. The grass was almost black, all of the darker spots in the clouds were black. All of the other colors except for the blue sky were way too dark. I tried another UAV and got the same results. I tried to adjust the color with the monitor controls and that didn't help much. I am using a Dell monitor that has s-video and composite inputs. When I boot without a cart, the Atari Logo screen has all of the colors but they are darker than usual. I tried two different carts so I know it isn't the cart nor the UAV. Has anyone experienced a similar problem.
  6. I just realized that your location is given in your initial post.
  7. Pull a keycap and take a picture of the mechanical switch, I may be able to give you some tips on repair, depending on the type of switch.
  8. Where are you in NC? I am in NC also about 25 miles east of Raleigh. I have repaired dozens of 800XLs and I would be glad to see if I could figure out what exactly is wrong with the DOA. If you are going to get seriously into the Atari community you probably want to fix it yourself. The first step would be to solder sockets into the place where they are missing. Then you insert working chips into the missing spaces. If the computer is still dead, you start swapping chips from the dead one to the working one until you find the culprit. I could mail you the sockets if you want to become a regular Atari freak/nerd.
  9. I know it is possible to replace a ribbon cable but I don't know if replacements exist anywhere. You should just get a new keyboard from Best. There new improved mylar type keyboards are supposed to be very good and long lasting. Sell replacement keycaps on eBay. You can probably sell them for $5 each. You could also sell the key switches on eBay. It might take a while to recoup your cost but it is possible.
  10. That is a mechanical switch keyboard, there is no mylar. Each key has contacts inside the switch that are activated by depressing the plunger.
  11. Those opportunities are rare, I have only had one in the past two months and if you have a computer that you can't use you might not want to wait for an indeterminate amount of time while you hope to find that "GOOD DEAL".
  12. Best Electronics has keyboards, they have the mylar version and the mechanical version. Mechanical is more expensive. You need to call Best, they are very slow about responding to emails. I get the feeling they are way understaffed.
  13. A 600XL that is missing two keycaps and a space-bar. I hope to do a SV 2.1 and a memory upgrade on it. If I botch the SV, I will install a UAV.
  14. I don't have any of those type switches. Best Electronics is your best bet.
  15. That is a memory upgrade that I haven't seen before. It will be hard to troubleshoot. I would try swapping chips into a working computer if you have one.
  16. You can usually get switches and key caps from Best electronics. I have some spare switches and I would give you one if I have the same switch. Take a really close up picture and post it.
  17. I have sold many of these machines and I have always wondered why the seller didn't care enough to at least clean the exterior.
  18. Maybe it isn't unusual for 1 pin out of 40 to stop working.
  19. I removed, checked, and reinserted the PIA and nothing changed so I replaced the PIA and that solved the problem.
  20. I have touched up the solder joints for the joystick pins, checked the pins and they are all present and none are bent.
  21. I have a 600XL that screen objects will not respond to an UP movement from JOYSTICK #2. I have tried multiple joysticks. The objects will move left, right, and down.
  22. I saw a mention of a 256K RAM upgrade on the Best Electronics web site. Has anyone have any experience/knowledge with it?
  23. I gave up and installed a UAV,never could get composite.
  24. I just finished upgrading a 600XL with Supervideo 2.1. The S-Video is great but I can't get composite. I have a ferrite bead in L12, everything appears to ne installed correctly. The composite cut off switch is supposed to be connected to the holes of L13I didn't want to add the switch so I put a ferrite bead in the holes. No composite with the bead, no composite without the bead. Does anyone know where composite originates so I could pick off the signal and run a wire directly to the monitor jack.
