    I built my first spinner for a MAME panel some years ago. I went with an opticoder rather than a pot. It was pretty sweet too - machined the whole thing out of stainless steel, pressed in sealed bearings, the whole nine yards.

     

    Later, I wanted to play Discs of Tron properly, so I built another one, but this time with the proper up/down motion to correctly control aiming. This time I went with a black anodized steel knob and machined all the guts from scratch out of black delrin. It works, but I never got around to finishing the rest of the panel, so it's sitting in a box somewhere.
