i was playing one of my favorite games last night Wizard Of Wor and realized just how much i've always enjoyed games that talk

especially robotic voices and things like that...hopefully there will be a lot of that in some Amico games..like in Beauty & The Beast hearing

Horrible Hank taunt you would be awesome

How does copyright work on robotic voices? I had (have) an entire folder of words the Speak & Spell can say, which I intended on using for a scrapped game I was making in college that was a hybrid of Berserk and Windjammers. I was always curious if the Speak & Spell voice font was copyrighted and if so, if there was a royalty-free voice font people could use for games since I also dig the sound. I believe with Vocaloids (such as Hatsune Miku) you get a personal commercial license when you buy the software, but I could never find the legality of using older sound fonts in games. If Intellivision does own the Intellivoice and can license it out to developers (maybe by providing .ogg files of individual words it has said originally) I would totally be down to use said voices in my games. With permission, I'd also be willing to generate an Intellivoice sound bank if I knew which game sounds were free to use. Sorry for the tangent, but this is an incredibly niche topic of gamedev that has had my interest for years!

    Hi!

Thank-you so much for joining the conversation and giving your thoughts!

I am very conscious of the things you spoke about and they are important to me.  I had a handicapped sister named Karen who unfortunately passed away about 15 years ago.  She was born on 10/10.

    Yet another secret... just revealed.

We don't have the kind of money for research and development that a company like Microsoft has and we have our hands full with everything we have going on to get Amico and all the games out.  But trust me when I say that when we have the time, budget and resources to do this... we will!  It's very important to me... and especially on a personal level.

When the time comes for us to start developing something like this I would LOVE to get your input and feedback as to what is important to you!  The great thing about most Amico games is they only have 1 or 2 buttons.. unlike most of the stuff on the PS or Xbox.

Thank-you for sharing your story and concern.  Please keep checking in with me and stay in touch so when the time is right we can do some work together.  Would be great to hire someone like yourself to help us build something amazing.

    Thanks!

Thanks for replying Tommy! As I alluded to earlier, I can't really be paid for my accessibility consultant work within the game industry. I've only really been compensated with travel in the past. I just love making and playing games, and honestly I am doing nothing at the moment. Payment in Intellivision stuff is fine by me. :)

Another idea I forgot to add to my original post is the Amico is THE device to have an accessible game jam on. I was so fixated on accessibility initially I forgot to ask to be a developer, but I am interested to see what I can do accessibility-wise with your already existing dev-kit. I think an Intellivision-backed game jam having to do with accessibility would result in many developers coming up with interesting ways to use the controllers and phones for accessible gaming. I participated in Train Jam a few years ago (a game jam for people on a train traveling to GDC) and fully intended on making an accessible game for AirConsole, a cloud-based gaming service that uses phones as input devices much like the Amico optionally can do. However, I forgot that I couldn't access the internet on the train, so my ideas for that game jam never came into fruition as I had to make something playable offline.

I'm really attracted to the Amico as a platform because you (and presumably everyone at Intellivision) get just how many people play games. I've had many arguments online in the past about those in nursing homes, candy crushers, disabled folks like me, etc are not real gamers. I'm surprised how many people in and out of the game industry still push the real gamer narrative. I've always held the opinion that if you play games, you're a gamer. The Amico seems all about inclusivity and the marketing conveys it well. To me, the Amico and accessibility almost have a symbiotic relationship. I believe the more accessible the Amico is, the more successful it will be. I also see the better the Amico's games and innovations are, the better it'll do at installing itself in unlikely markets. Love what you're doing, keep it up! Thanks.

  3. The Amico is shaping up to look pretty interesting, but I'm still wondering how accessible it will be to play for people with disabilities. I've personally never gotten an original Intellivision because of its controller being rather difficult to control with my feet. I reached out to the Amico team as soon as their website went live about accessibility and making the system more accessible, but never heard back. Legally, all game consoles have to adhere to a variety of accessibility standards for operation, in addition to apps having to meet a minimum accessibility requirement. I've helped Xbox over the years with making their system more accessible, even testing their Xbox Adaptive Controller since its inception. I have also done tons of app development and QA directly related to accessibility, and of course have plenty of experience playing/making games as well. This isn't me begging for a paid gig, either, as making money is actually detrimental to my way of life (thanks US disability services!)

The main reason I am so vested is that I see tons of potential for the Amico in terms of accessibility. I can totally see the Amico being used in therapy, rehab, nursing homes, and so much more. Nothing ever replaced the Wii in nursing homes for example, where I can totally see the Amico being that replacement. There's plenty of awards given out every year for accessible toys and tech that I think the Amico has a good shot at winning. But, the accessibility of the software and hardware have to match and exceed the Amico's potential. I would love to talk to Tommy more about Amico accessibility and eventually, see Intellivision itself speak on the topic. I'm excited for the Amico if I can play it, but would be much more interested if I knew of its accessibility and knew my feet could kick ass with its controllers. :)

  4. This news started me down a long road of emulating these games through MAME. There's a surprising amount of Tiger LCD games supported in MAME right now, including X-Men Project X and Transformers Generation 2, which are both getting re-released. I went ahead and pre-ordered Sonic 3 at my local GameStop and the clerk was stunned I went in to preorder one of these, haha. I'd get any of these for $5 on clearance, but they got my money with any Sega re-release. I'd love to see NiGHTs, Castlevania SOTN, and Sonic Adventure down the line as these three games I'd love to have but not for their used asking price. My personal favorite game (that I still own) is Gauntlet; supported in MAME but comes highly recommended from me should a re-release happen!

  5. The TMNT micro arcade game looks fantastic. It is single-player only, but all Turtles are confirmed to be selectable and it is the arcade version. Its Framerate doesn't look great, but I am ready for later arcade games to get the re-release treatment and cannot wait for TMNT. It'll look great next to the excellent TMNT pinball release last year. Hoping for a pair of Terminator 2 gun/pinball games down the road!

Over the holidays, I was gifted my first MyArcade product, the Dig Dug micro arcade player. I was excited to get this as it is the first official western release of the Tower of Druaga Famicom I'm aware of, but it has a glaring issue I cannot overlook. It removed features from the original games. I just wrote an Amazon review, but it isn't up yet so I'll post my review here as well. :)

I was fine with the games being Nintendo/Famicom ports. I have wanted a dedicated, western release of the Famicom version of Tower of Druaga so I was very excited for MyArcade to release this product. Unfortunately, MyArcade butchered the Tower of Druaga port, along with both Dig Dug ports.

How? Simply put, MyArcade did not bother putting a select button on this Micro Player, despite putting a B button on the unit that does absolutely nothing. There is a "select button" but it only chooses a game when you power on the system. What does this mean? Each game is missing features present in their original Nintendo/Famicom form. Tower of Druaga had a continue option right on its main menu that would start you at Level 1 with all items you collected previously by pressing select (see attached screenshot). I'm positive Continue is still present on the main menu, just with the words blacked-out. Both Dig Dug and Dig Dug II have Level Select cheats that are activated by pressing Select + A + Start on the title screen, after scrolling. None of these features are possible without a select button.

So what's the big deal? In my opinion, these features had no reason to be removed and all of them would be great on a portable device. I doubt anyone is going to go through every level in Dig Dug on the MyArcade in one sitting (the batteries would die long before you hit the last level for sure) but with the level select code, I can see plenty of people (including myself) digging their way to the last level.

As much as I love Tower of Druaga, getting every required item in one run is a daunting task, which would be made way less daunting if I could continue the game with the items I collected after game over. And yes, Tower of Druaga has tons of required items with complex requirements to spawn them that you need to beat the game. MyArcade didn't include a Hint Book or even a decent description of Tower of Druaga with the Micro Player, so I really think it stinks most people buying this product will barely even play Tower of Druaga given how poorly the game is represented.

A quick aside from this review, but if you haven't yet, play Tower of Druaga with a Hint Book. It's an impressive game that inspired so many classics (Zelda) that should not go unplayed by anyone! You get speed shoes in the second level by killing three black slimes which makes the game pace good so stick with it and have fun!

As for the product itself, I find the battery life to be poor and the screen incredibly cheap. The aspect ratio isn't quite right as each game has some degree of uneven pixels (screen shimmers when scrolling). I do love the micro-switched Start button and wish that along with a micro-switched select button, and I'd maybe love for the A button to be micro-switched as well. The form factor of the Micro Player is great. As I mentioned earlier, I wish they included a printed Tower of Druaga hint book so more people can enjoy the game.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend any product that took inferior ports of arcade games and made them worse than they originally were. I was actually content with playing Famicom ports of these games primarily because I wanted to own Tower of Druaga Famicom in some official capacity. But to remove features present in the original games? I'm not cool with that. I also feel the Tower of Druaga got represented poorly in this package due to the lack of its continue option (which isn't even a cheat code, just an option on the main menu) and the manual lacking information on the game's hidden treasures. This was my first MyArcade product and will be my last until the company puts more effort into their products.

  6. it's possible there may be a 'star wars' related game announced:

    These are the options

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name Manufacturer Year Type Description Images

    Star Wars Atari 1983 Videogame

Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back Atari Games 1985 Videogame

Star Wars Arcade Sega 1993 Videogame

Star Wars Racer Arcade Sega 2000 Videogame

Star Wars Starfighter Tsunami Visual Technologies, Inc. 2003 Videogame

Star Wars Trilogy Arcade Sega 1998 Videogame

Return Of The Jedi Atari 1984 Videogame

    later

    -1

Under A1UP or AtGames? Either way, I doubt we'll get any of the Sega games. This will either be an Atari trilogy A1UP cabinet or AtGames putting the three Atari games on their cab.

  7.

Based on the video of four people playing together, it looks really cramped, at least by the hands moving the joysticks and the other players' button use. Outside of the panel itself, that doesn't bode well for larger-bodied gamers trying to play side-by-side. Otherwise, it seems like a good design and a reasonable price.

Agreed. The middle gamers are basically holding hands in the promo picture!

  8. Oh my. There are going to be a lot of very happy thirty-somethings as a result of this announcement.

Twenty-something here and the Marvel cab will likely be the one A1UP cab I buy. Hoping these are still hackable as while I love the game selection (Marvel Super Heroes is my favorite CPS-2 fighting game), Marvel vs Capcom 1 belongs here. TMNT would also interest me, but I was never a fan of its button layout and being authentic, the A1UP version has not changed anything about it. That and I've heard A1UP's 3 Player Rampage was very uncomfortable to play, so I can't imagine 4 player TMNT is going to play that much better...

  9. Arcade1Up just announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel Super Heroes cabinets, coming later this year.

  10. I wouldn't mind buying a few of these mags if they heavily focus on neo geo pocket and do not have scans available online. not sure if there's an easy way to tell contents of each issue. ive been (slowly) working my way through translating some japanese ngpc manual scans using ocr, but would love to do the same for mags focused on ngpc as well (select articles at least).

  11. FB 1 had 20 games

    FB 2 had 40 games

    FB 2+ had 40 games

    FB 3 had 60 games

    FB 4 had 76 games

    FB 5 had 92 gsmes

    FB 6 had 100 games

    FB 8 had 105 games

FB 8 delux had 105 games

FB 8 gold had 120 games

    FB 9 had 120 games

    FB 64 had 64 games

So 1042 games total. So a lot more than 350.

But how many are unique games? I'd guess 120 games+10 previously licensed titles are the total amount of unique games from hardware. And then how many of those are in new Atari Flashback console compilations? All told, maybe you could hit 200 Atari games if you also include licensed Disney/Data East Atari games, assuming they still retain distribution rights for everything. 1042 is a wildly inaccurate guess. Even if 200/350 of the games end up being every AtGames-distributed Atari game ever, how many of those are shovelware? Who here would sit down for an afternoon on their arcade playing Basic Math? I believe I've said this elsewhere, but I'm sure the market research shows adding shovelware to these devices to pump up the total number of games correlates somewhat to sales. I'm expecting plenty of garbage and the ability to hide said garbage, but I doubt many games included will be played by anyone.

  12. I'm interested but am worried that with 350 games included, the vast majority will be shovelware, padding out the collection to 350. If this arcade includes every game off the Atari Flashback collections, Data East carts/mini arcades, and 80s Disney arcade/Atari games, I doubt that's even 250 games in total. Adding additional games from the Atari and Genesis PnP systems, terrible shovelware included, I still can't come up with 350 total games...

  13.

Game wise is bad, not for comics and toys =D.

Make a Rock N' Sock 'Em Robots toy using the IP and congrats, you've made the best game in the franchise! Thanks for responding to my post; Metal Masters is now on my want list. I would love to see an Atari Jaguar port! And I had no idea a Primal Rage film was coming. That's cool I guess, but I was disappointed WB didn't re-release the Rampage games to modern systems (and reprint to classic systems?). I am afraid the same will happen with Primal Rage, which is a shame because Primal Rage 2 could be finished and distributed through the right company if its source code still exists.

  14. Great to know Feet.

Glad that you're getting the Japanese version as well. A fine edition to add to your collection. We can't wait to listen in on what you have to say. If you would be interested in taking request, I would say, Magician Lord would be the top choice to try out. Challenging, but fun to play.

Thank you as always for stopping by Feet. Looking forward on seeing more from you and posting away with us here. icon_smile.gif

    Anthony..

Well, my "Japanese" Neo Geo Mini came in this afternoon, and it isn't the Japanese version. It's the International Neo Geo Mini in the Japanese cabinet, the cabinet I already have, except in came with a single Kyo marquee sticker instead of G-Mantle. I am too lazy to send it back (I got a decent deal...), so I decided to hack it. I would have been fine with just restoring the Japanese firmware, but the hack image floating around also comes with multiple pre-built emulators and games, in addition to the original 40 Japanese games. The included FBA emulator in the hack plays Neo Geo games perfectly (as expected, though the games are their MVS versions), and the CPS-1 games also run fairly well. CPS-2 has a bit of slowdown and sound lag, it didn't come with any 6 button fighters, and interestingly there's a pornographic puzzle game among the FBA rom list, but what's there is definitely worth checking out.

What isn't worth checking out is most of the other emulators, those being GBC, GBA, NES, Genesis, and SNES. All of them have non-integer scaling, lack of battery backup (save states do work) and sound issues, ranging from NES and Genesis with "okay" sound to GBA and SNES having sound so bad it actually hurts to listen to. GBA doesn't have L and R mapped to anything, so most of its games are unplayable (I only could play Super Mario Advance, many games that may work end up crashing). NES seems fine, but the included game selection is piss poor, with Namco PacMan and Ninja Gaiden being by far the best. No Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, or really any of the usual Famiclone games are present. GBC emulation is the definition of okay, not broken but with shimmering and sound channel issues, it's not worth bothering with its 15 Pokemon games and 10 Winnie the Pooh/Yogi Bear kid games. Genesis is the only emulator worth checking out as while it does have minor sound issues and shimmering, the game selection is solid and it plays better than anything AtGames ever put to market. Super Nintendo, however, is rough. Lack of buttons is obvious, but the game lag and sound are the worst I've seen in emulation. And I played bsnes on Intel HD Graphics! You can play more games with a USB drive, but why would you do that? In short, if you MUST play games on your Mini outside of FBA, Genesis is the only library worth your time.

As for Magician Lord on my International Mini? Love it but damn is the AES version difficult! Infinite continues are nice, but you don't respawn right where you die like in the MVS version. And reloading a memory card save puts you back to the beginning of the level! There isn't a difficulty select, but I am assuming it's on easy as you get 3 hits (6 powered up) instead of 2 (4) hits. Despite that, I find that respawning right where you die is far more valuable, so I won't be playing much AES Magician Lord until I'm better at the MVS version (which I now have on my hacked Mini). Love the game, but it is really difficult and I'm stubborn to use save states. Trying to stick to internal memory card saves only, which means I'll have to 4CC Shock Troopers/2nd Squad as I learned today neither have memory card support.

I guess this is a first impressions again, but I do love both of my International units. I'll try to more formally review both in some capacity eventually, and when I do, my posts here will be great to reference back to.

  15. Hey Feet,

Great to see you back on with us. I always use to like when gamers show their skills using their feet. I remember as a boy when those played the Rubik's cube with their feet as well. So this is always cool in my books. 8^)

Interesting that you mention this about your Mini iI this a later version that maybe they fix the issues with compared to the launch versions? It could be that you have a later model that was introduced.

Also bro, maybe you like to do a verbal review on the Mini of yours or play a favorite title on it to share your thoughts on the game? We would love to listen in on what you have to say since you enjoy your investment in it. icon_smile.gif

    Anthony..

Thanks. I'd have to figure out how to record footage for longer review, but I can definitely type up the script. I'm getting the Japanese version in the mail today so I can compare the two. I've put well over 20 hours into the International version by now, and most everything plays great. The one strange glitch I've run into is when playing Crossed Swords, the text language will jump between Japanese and English at random. I found one archived post elsewhere reporting the same glitch. I was not able to replicate the behavior in FireBurn Alpha on my PC, though I can't say for sure what triggers it. My Mini also runs warm if played for more than an hour, but otherwise, it's great.

  16. I'm a 90s kid, one who didn't grow up on DOS at all, and the only IP I know my generation would recognize from Piko Interactive is Duke Nukem 3D. I know a few more IPs listed, but Switchblade is not one of them. Human faces with crap paint put me off to most action figures, and Switchblade definitely falls into that category. A Duke Nukem figure with shades could work, but my interest would increase exponentially if there were also alien figures such as Pig Cop. You don't own the IP, but a rerelease of the Primal Rage figures from the 90s would be my ideal retro figure. I collect Power Rangers stuff to this day, and the brand, build quality, and Megazords are what keep me interested. The Megazord designs and connectivity are great. Like Transformers before, Megazords were designed as toys first so that gives them more appeal over the competition.

  17. Horizontal games are included on the Namco Museum MyArcade? Why? I can't see Splatterhouse and PacMan 2: TNA looking or playing well at all on it. Could be worth it for the vertical games, but this is MyArcade we're talking about. Their emulation and joysticks have been historically trash.

  18. Posted over in the Mini Arcade thread, but thought this may be of greater interest here.

Haven't posted in a while, but I recently purchased a Neo Geo Mini International. My unit is different from others I've seen in reviews, as it contains the International game set with the Japanese cabinet design. I shot a short video of me playing Magician Lord on it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIX8ucIFFsk

Also worth pointing out is that my unit came with one sticker in the box, and surprisingly, it's G-Mantle. I believe this sticker was sold separately in Japan. G-Mantle has cameos in several games, of course, but I can't find any English promotional material featuring G-Mantle which makes me wonder why this sticker in particular came in the box. What confuses me is that G-Mantle isn't playable in any Neo Geo game, and is only a secret Striker in King of Fighters 2000.

    b8K4WVR.jpg

But what is more surprising than the redesign is that I believe SNK fixed issues with previous versions. The screen brightness at max is perfect for me; I can see everything except some tiny text perfectly, despite playing it way down at my feet. The controls also feel spot on, both the Mini's stick and the external joypads (I opted for the $110 bundle with controllers and generic mini-HDMI cable, all packaged separately). I've never felt like I had more control in Metal Slug than when playing the Mini (I play the Neo Geo X handheld recently, and felt the microswitch controls to be inpercise for non-fighting games). I can do King of Fighters supers that I consistently on the Mini (the ones I know), though I haven't attempted to do Geese's pretzel super yet. Although it still does not have an internal battery, personally I LOVE having this thing powered on all day through my computer. And from the brief time I played in HDMI, it seemed the same as in earlier reviews, but mine came with a generic cable so I can't say for sure if the official cable would be any better. Does anyone else own one of these? And have access to the black International mini? I have not seen much discussion on my Mini anywhere.

  20. Joe is Game Sack, so it should be okay without Dave, though I will miss Dave's friendly and honest reviews, as well as the banter between the pair.

Thanks for the mention, Reaperman. These threads always make me sad about what I feel certain our channel could've been. My two brothers agreed to team up with me because we thought we stood more of a chance together, but they didn't share my thirst to create content. It's difficult to go on alone, especially considering the ridiculous amount of free time making videos eats up.

I've been loving your Neo Geo videos DJ. Watching you complete and break down the Neo Geo's library is great, and beats most of the reviews I've watched/read; I often question if the reviewer even got close to beating the game (recent ACA Neo Geo reviews are a good example of this). Using the Neo Geo's product numbers is an excellent way to do the series. Not to steal your thunder, but I may revive my YouTube channel and do something very similar for Neo Geo Pocket games, if there's interest. Even if I never get to my own project, thank you for the inspiration and I hope to see you continue content creation on your own because you're killing it right now. Also continue because King of the Monsters is one of my favorite Neo Geo games, and I'd love to have a video to link people whenever they tell me its gameplay is braindead!

  21. Are there any channels with a blatant Neo Geo bias? I follow over half of the channels here, and their SNK coverage never goes beyond the dedicated/digital re releases. These videos bum me out not only because the re releases are never great, but also because time is never spent talking about the games themselves. I suppose Game Sack, Ashens (recommended!), and CGR have done Neo Geo/Pocket/CD reviews, but their reviews for SNK games are surface level at best. I'd love to see more videos like The Geek Critique's Sonic Pocket Adventure retrospective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQnXoaBoUAo TGC would be my second recommended channel as his recent Sonic reviews are excellent and I hope he someday goes back to give Pocket Adventure the same treatment.
