    Hi,

     

    I have resently got my hands on a BlackBox with firmware 1.44.

    Been testing some different harddrives, and it works great.

    I decided to do the 74ls280 parity fix, to be able to hook up a ZIP drive, or any newer harddrive, and even that worked good..

     

    But one thing I'm wondering about, it's when I change to a new harddrive that has not yet been Blackboxed, it then takes a couple of minutes before it boots from floppy.. (or SIO2PC thingi)

     

    Is that normal?

    I'll guess BB is scanning the buss for bootable harddrives / configuration partitions.

    But little curious why it takes so long..

    Finally, I was able to make an XL/XE cartridge image. It's just a little different from 5200 images, but it's that little "bit" that counts. If you compile this code with DASM then ATTACH the resulting image to an emulator, it will turn the screen GREY. Here is the format.

    I can try the ROM in a socket based OSS cart that I have.

    Great - can't wait to try this. I'm having difficulty getting my head around the idea of the program being 8K long, though.

     

    No, go with the file from this thread... :sad:

    All I get is the diagnostic window..

    Maybe I need a drive hooked up to the computer...

    If you've got an orange cart, you will see a compact board with a few small ICs, a resistor, a capacitor or two, and two 2764 eproms (8kb each). In general, the black carts are the same except they contain a single 27128 eprom (16kb), unless its a Writer's Tool in which case it contains a single 2764.

     

    [Note as of 4-13-2002: why is the 8kb Writer's Tool a bank-switching Supercart? My guess is for copy protection, since it won't work without the bank switching... plus OSS probably had quite a few of these boards laying around!]

    What is the current status of the new MIO? I may be interested in one. I tried to ask about this on blackendtech, pressed "submit" and it seemed like nothing happened. I hope you can get all that, cause it's long, all about what I wanted to do with the MIO while I was with FTe, and I don't feel like typing all that again :)

    I just bought the 130XE field service manual. However "Shematic Diagram is 11" X 17" but quality is low with some pins unreadable.". So I was wondering has anyone redone a better version and is it available anywhere? I found a nice ps one for the 800XL here (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~sgl/atari/schematics/info.txt). However for the 130XE I only found a single page of Jerzy Sobola's 130XE Secam schematics on this forum. This looked really neat though - are the rest of these available somewhere?

    I have a friend who likes to go to recycle stations here in Sweden.

    And he is a really nice guy, he found a Veller VP 801 EC de-soldering system, that actually works..

     

    So he gave it to me..

     

    Anyway, I have this 130XE that I think de previous owner tried to hook up to a none Atari psu.

    He could not get it to work, so he sent it to me, as spare parts..

     

    So when I got this Veller station I decided to try it out on the broken 130XE, and remove some of the circuits I thought where broken..

    So with this tool I remove the circuits pretty fast..

     

    I had a hunch the Freddie was gone, also the memory chips, so I removed them..

    I also decided to put all the other Atari circuits in sockets.. (Sally, GTIA, POKEY, ANTIC, PIA, OS, BASIC)

     

    I have a 130XE that is running, but has some modifications, so I decided to remove Freddie from it..

    So with a working Freddie and a new set of working 64k1 DRAM's I manage to get a rostbrown picture.

    I verified that I had good voltage, and all the clocks where ticking, also checked that the system was not halted or in reset state.

     

    I replace the RAM for another set just to be safe..

     

    Still same rostbrown display..

     

    I had a chat conversation with an old friend and we talked about the different circuits, and we both felt that it might be an issue with one of the address decoders..

     

    Due to the rostbrown display, it did not feel like the LS138 that handles the chip select for GTIA, PIA and Pokey, it felt more like there might be an issue with the C061618.

    So I decided to remove it, and try a healthy one, Huston, we have lift-off..

     

    The 130XE starts..

     

    So basically, in this machine that presumably had been hooked up with a PSU with wrong polarization, the RAM, MMU and Freddie went to heaven..

     

    I can’t not swear that it will act the same on other XL/XE who have been hooked up with a wrong PSU, but at least it can give a hint on where to start looking..

     

    I have taken some pictures of the board in different stages, I will post them tomorrow if somebody would like to have a look..

     

    I found the Bob Wooley MMU PAL source file, I will try that one, and for Freddie, I hope I can find one at B & C or similar places.

     

    Keep on Atari preservation..

    Can you post a picture of your keyboard? There are several variations and you'll need the right spacebar.

    What is a "happy discovery cartridge (one with all the options incl 128KB MAC Rom" what does it do?

    It's a disk dupplication system with built in ROM support for one of the MAC emulators for the ST range of computers.

    Don't remember if it was MagicSac or Spectre.

     

    As I was using the Spectre GCR that where able to read MAC formated disks live, and with the happy cartridge you needed a transport tool.

    looks like you missed a few of them that have been auctioned off in the last month or so.

    Both were bought by the same guy, he is also the winning bid on the current one listed.

     

    It seems none of them have had the all the options. Just a plain Discovery Cart.

     

    Ive had three and all of the had all options except the clock.  I think the chip is hard to find. Or cost more than its worth.

    One with an cartridge port, I solderd it my self when I was working for Atari in Sweden.

     

    The other one has everything besides the cartridge port, clock, extra FDD port, MAC ROMS..

    I'm planning to design and produce a PCI adaptor for CT60/63...

     

    For that I need at least 100 pre-orders... the list of pre-orders is open up to september, the 30th of 2005 !

    At september 30th, if there is not 100 boards on my list, the project is definitively cancelled or I will check to increase the price of the board !

    - It is a small card that plugs on the CT60/63 bus and uses a PLX 9054 LOCAL-PCI bridge.

    This modern bridge is the successor of the 9080 that was used in the Milan.

    It is register backward compatible...

    - Because some of you have ATX tower case, they will want to use the rear brackets of the tower or at least use a rear place. So the other part of the CTPCI is a board connected with two 40 wires ribbon cables (must be short) with 3 PCI slots (one for graphical card and 2 others for what people will be able to do & develop).

    - The slots will be 32-bits with ajustable clock for PCI (default will be 33 MHz and you may tune it up to 66 MHz : the PLX is not able to run PCI 66 MHz !). Voltages will be 5V and 3.3V power (no 3.3V on Milan PCI slots !).

    - The adaptor will be slave and master PCI : this means that the PCI cards will be able to initiate a PCI master transaction to local bus and so SDRAM of the CT60 without CPU (the eclipse board is just slave, no PCI mastering and the CPU does all transfers in the 2 senses !).

    - There are several good PCI graphical cards available : one will be to be choosen by the developer(s). Several developers are ready to help and contribute, some of them have already contributed with fVDI by example !).

    So I'm confidente for this technical point...

    - I will try to design the PCI socket PCB to be cuttable between the first and second PCI slot (to have a single PCI slot card) to allow some of you to try to integrate a small graphical card into their falcon case...(why not).

    - Yes, it will be possible to plug the EtherNAT board under it.

     

    If I receive the 100 boards pre-orders, I will design the board...and will request you to pay by advance. The payment is my only assurance that I will not be with some unsold boards after : 10 to 25% of people do not honor their pre-order (do not pay and do not give sign of life !).

    Do not send money until I give you my decision (after 30.09) !

    Do not forget to give me your name (for those who send me anonymous emails !).

     

     

    Price : 120 EUR, maybe a bit more (140).

    Delays : 1 months to design + 1 month to produce prototype and try it with some software developers. After production may take 1 to 2 months according the delays to get the parts (here the only that may give problems is PLX).

     

    If you have some questions to decide, do not hesitate...

    Something I wondered about years ago, and a web page I recently found reminded me of it.

     

    There used to be an ST cartridge called "Magic Sac" that made the ST run Macintish software:

    When it was released, magazine articles explained that you needed authentic ROMs, "ROMs pulled from a Mac 128 or 512". I'm guessing that this phrase appeared in the product literature, because it appeared in every old article mentioning the device.

     

    My question: where the hell were the ROMs coming from? Did people really canabalize expansive Apple machines to make a cheaper machine emulate the MAC? Was there an underground market for Apple ROMs from discarded computers?

     

    Or was "ROMs pulled from a Mac 128 or 512" code words for "pirate ROMS" as I've allways suspected?

    Back in those days, eprom programmers where not sheep..

    But, Magi Sac used the 64KB ROM and thanks to some dealers, you could get hold of them when they upgraded a real ma to the 128KB ROM.

     

    Magic Sac where okay, but the big break game with Spectre GCR, because it could read and write MAC formatted disks and where using the 128KB ROMS.

     

    We had a lot of customer in Sweden using the Spectre GCR to be able to live in both worlds.

     

    And there was a printer driver that worked like a charm with the Atari lasers.

    So you got a very low price MAC compatible system...

    Hmm..

    There is something back in my head saying that a Space game was released on cartridge for the ST range.

    And it was like the Fast Basic cartridge, so it came up lika a program file when you double clicked on the cartridge icon.

     

    But most of the carts where tools.

     

    I still have some cartride port stuff like :

     

    8 Bit mono sampler

    16 Bit Mono sampler

    Eprom programmer

    Ultimate Ripper, and some ripping tools that are very alike.

    Fast Basic

    Happy Discovery cartridge

    Spectre GCR

    ROM port switch (4 cartridge to switch between)

    Scanner interface.

    Diagnostic carts various sizes and shapes.

     

    This is what I can think of at the moment.

    I have not used them for at least 10 years or so...

     

    I have manage to keep them away from my wife, so she could not throw them away! She loves to throw things away, specially old computer stuff..

     

    I say it is classics and nostalgias, she just complains and says it is junk... :-(

    Hmm, I didn't think any 16mhz TTS were officialy released? I thought that was part of the original design specs, along with the 68020 instead of the 68030, but that Atari never went through with it, instead going for the 32mhz/030 configuration.

     

    Or am I remembering it wrong? :-)

    hmm I am not sure. My friend has some earlier TT with CPU on daughter board. But I cannot remember it is 16 or 32 MHz. What I know is fact that this TT is slower than my.

    The early TT030 where 16Mhz, don't think many was actually sold.

    Most of them was populated with a daughterboard with a 32Mhz 68030 on it.

    The new motherboard where a little bit faster and could use a 16 or a 32 Mhz CPU by setting a dip switch.

     

    Did replace a fiew of thoes daughterboards way back, if I rememeber correct..

    This is the name of the CT60 third production !

     

    This CT63 will be a LOW COST version of the CT60 and I asked to the factory to give me a price without all components that can me removed on the board (not implemented).

     

    The CT63 will be so :

     

    - Price betwen 220 to 250 EUR with the 060 (full) : depending on the number of board that may be produced !

    - no 060 socket : the 060 will be soldered (after tested) on the board (will get more space under the keyboard).

    - heatsink will be stucked on the 060 and a fan will be fixed (plugged) on the heatsink (size of heatsink = 45*45 cms).

    - the CPU & SDRAM clocked at 50 MHz instead of the 66MHz (OSC soldered (no socket) = can be unsoldered to try to boost).

    - no boost of the motherboard (components not present = could be added by the user if he can find and solder them !).

    - no temperature captor (it is a gadget because get more than 10 deg C of unprecision !).

     

    This time I have 14 orders and I'd like to get 40 orders.

     

    Let's go atarians ! It is your last chance to join the Falcon 060 world !
