Scrolling in bitmap modes on A8
Allas replied to Jetboot Jack's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
demo1.zip In this demo the upper section of scrolling bars show noise along the middle. I notice when Atari scroll vertical bars, this noise effect appears. There is some way to avoid this noise? -
Yes, there was a lot of great computers on 1985. Basically, with the technical enhancing on industry. I would prefer a 8bit computer with 320x200 with at least 16 colors, 128K, but the great C64 success keep the 8bit industry on his standards. I like Atari 1979 tech, with a little memory enhancements was very competitive hardware. There is no computer on his time that could be compared, only C64 that came on 1982 was built on competitive tech.

Your demo is perfect for this discussion. Slow scrolls can be managed very well with adequate timings on VBI. Thank you for the new set colors, it looks fine. I guess you saved the 5th color to use as char bullets (White color as on Turrican C64 game)

No man, the best seller computer always be the cheaper computer. (And this, nothing to do with the quality, its a matter of marketing. Other way, C64 have a respectable quality for his time) When i bought my C64, i knew has scroll hardware, but never suspect how powerful in comparison with Atari after many years after. Even, other computers without scroll by hardware sold more games than Atari 8bit.

C64 1/320 scroll with 1/50 updating is the same (on speed) with 2/320 Atari scroll with 2/50 updating. There is no problem with the 2/320 movement scroll on Atari, is enough. This is a example of Atari scrolling, 4 directions free, look what smooth it is, a little better on C64?... yes, but who cares, I never change the other features for 1/320 movement. xscroll.zip

Well, I found some screens. The angle of the lines just fit on 160x200 mode, and with this mode, the game can use 4 or 5 colors, overlapping sprites, and other nice effects. Well, don't take me much attention, I really a fan of 160 mode.

A little reminder of workareas on both computers on real widescreen TVs On C64 you have the best minimal pixel on screen for detailed draws, but on overall you fell on borders too much free space (At least you use a zoom on your TV). On Atari, you could gently use all the area vertical or horizontal, but course, pixels are bigs. What is better? who knows? a matter of taste.

It looks great! you have the logic complete. Did you try with Gr 15 ? I think it fits better.

Its simple, Atari have the better scrolling system on any 8bit machine. (include the handling, the possibilities, the flexibility, more saved resources, faster) Please, don't try to say C64 scroll is better because have 1/320 movement. Believe or not, casual players, didn't take difference on 1/320 and 2/320 movements (obviously, when 2/320 movement is timed adequately)

You didn't pay attention when Crossover was released, did you? It's the same trick. One ball is background graphics and four of them are PMGs. One player + missile per ball. Balls are shaped by changing horizontal positions of PMGs and it's data definitions on "each" scanline. I see every ball has a width of 40 pixels. Do you mean you change hpos and data four times per scanline per ball?

Great demo Ilusia! Really outstanding graphics and demo effects. I think it works very nice on a NTSC machine. This time Powrooz reach quality graphics that I never can imagine G2F can do. Congrats to all productions, really it was a productive party.

Me too. Allan Me three - it was an option when I bought my SIO2USB but since it's German language I decided not to. BTW I have to say that the SIO2USB folks from ABBUC have given me great support and are extremely helpful and friendly me four !

I have a P:R: device. I have an idea how to use, but it would be better if I could take a look at the manual

This pokey music deserve to be on the top 5 Atari msx. Great work! I suspect it can't be used on background gameplay, but as a intro music, it's fantastic.

Which is the best of the programming languages
Allas replied to carmel_andrews's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
There is no comparison with anything. For that reason is the unique and best. Direct fast programming at the core computer. -

Real Interlaced graphics on the A8 - getting closer
Allas replied to Rybags's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
It works on my LCD and 130XE NTSC. With interlaced set at OFF UPDATE: Oh i forgot... There isn't any perceptible flickering. -
GACCRR is a good idea. MOTL looks the same on both computers, due to char based engine.

46 - STEALTH Atari screenshots Another 3D shooter game. First version on Atari called LANDSCAPE and was published by BR0DERBOUND under the name STEALTH. Atari version have better display because the amount of colors. C64 screenshot

What we should call "the pinnacle of 8-bit shooters" then?
-
45 - STAR RAIDERS 2 Atari screenshots Awesome action motion and colors on Atari version, great sound; so far the best version. The C64 version was based on char technique, it has bad playability. This only game beat all the 2D scrolling shooters for his quality. C64 screenshots
-
44 - SQUISH'EM Atari screenshots The C64 version have a lot of colors, better and big graphics, but have enemies very very slow. Finally game levels are very boring. The Atari version seems like a game done with 2600 style, simply, but with aggressive playability. C64 screenshots
