  1. 18 - BREAK IT Atari screenshots This game is similar to Arkanoid levels. Ohhh....The C64 it's a pity, I can't see anymore. Atari have fast action and it's repleted of bonuses. I'd prefer playing Atari Break it! instead Arkanoid. C64 screenshot
  2. Just for fun. This magazine is from 1983, look at the table comparing features, a C64 cost $199 and an Atari 800 with only 48K cost $500, the 1200XL cost $800 Easy can see why C64 sold million of units.
  3. Here, the worst PC keyboards of all time. This time Commodore wins 4 vs 1 At least the 400 keyboard looks very cool, properly for minimal use on gaming cartridges. It was not designed for programmers. The 10 Worst PC keyboards of All time
  4. The Atari 400 computer was released basically for gaming people. The 800 was released at a high cost for seriously purposes, so it has a good solid keyboard in it.The best in his time.
  5. LCD TVs tend to create vertical scaling artifacts instead. At least my 1024x768 Toshiba 15" does, and believe me: the b/w default screen of an Atari ST or games like Lode Runner on the XL look pretty ugly this way. Thorsten Using the composite connection, I see the screen as the same on CRT TVs. The unique difference, games with flickering method (Space Harrier, Gem Drop, fe) and TIP pictures, doesn't show the flickering in anyway. It seems LCD mix 2 frames.
  6. This discussion is being very long, I think where is the recurrence error, there is a basic reason: the Atari had its golden age before 85 and the C64 after that year. The history describes one irrefutable fact : the C64 won the prices war, and for this reason had the biggest sales, soon great software companies put concentration only on the C64. Oh, and i can guess how much money they invest on developing new software and portings. I don't want to hear someone adding other commentaries, because is a easy principle. Nobody in 80's can choose exactly the better machine, only they choose a good machine with the lowest price, with more games, with more people interested. C64 is a good machine, have nice features for his time. Why they don't choose Atari computer (a good computer in his time too),.... despite the game database, the price is very important, and Atari cost twice the C64 on 1983. I see along this post and other post, C64 users can't take notice about the real power of an Atari computer. It seems happens this: - He hadn't a chance to appreciate the best games of the golden age of Atari ( before 84), maybe not his preferred style game, or simply considered "old games". Then, he choose Atari games from 1985-1994, but in this period Atari haven't the same companies that invest great money for the portings or new games. Only existed independent companies that use only the 20% of the Atari power. We can appreciate in this period a lot of games without colors, bad portings, loose of the fine animation from his golden period. This caused bad impression on C64 people for Atari games. - Technically, he thinks as a C64 or PC or Spectrum programmer. The Atari has a design very different. I want to say, all models have differences, but the Atari is really very different. I think someone needs a couple of years programming and studying the Atari to understand his real potential. Someone could believe a C64 user waste time on this? That explain why users of C64 believe that their machine is superior. The real truth is : a machine produced in 1982 should be better than the old design of Atari (1979), but there were some details that they failed (due to cost production?). I believe honestly that if the C64 can not clearly stand as a higher design compared to other machines, then I'd prefer the best and older model, inspire more respect.
  7. A reading about C64 .... http://wayoftherodent.com/features/64%203%...4%20history.htm
  8. 17 - COMMANDO Atari screenshots This is one of the most fun games that I played on 85's with my C64, it's no coincidence it was the game of the year. The C64 control are very responsive, the motion very fast, and the background music incredible. I played a lot of times this game on a C64 but take me many years later to try on the real arcade. After many years, the Commando version of Atari came, and I found is not as responsive that his c64 counterpart. Intead of that, I found a complete game ported from the arcade with the details that the C64 forgot in own version. Still now, i can't understand why the c64 version are poorly programmed at details level. There aren't intermediate screens, no initial helicopter, and the worse of all, only 3 levels (instead the 6 of original game), no map color. Maybe someone can explain why nobody create a complete c64 commando version. I enjoyed to play on C64, but it seems too easy and short. Comparing to the original arcade, I should choice the Atari version (even I had found secret chambers in his levels). However, both version are good but different. C64 screenshots
  9. 16 - SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD Atari screenshots Ok, this is a game of the great league (Alternate Reality is the other). Look what fantastic version Atari improves, still today is impressive. ç C64 screenshots
  10. 15 - POPEYE Atari screenshots A lot of fun with this game, one of my favorites arcades on my Atari and C128. Atari version is very playable and fast, despite the low resolution, the programmer did a great job. C64 version is too slow, and it's not according to the feel of arcade version. C64 screenshots
  11. People that make pictures or music (or a converse software) can continue doing pictures and music forever. Other people can continue playing the machine for many years with the old software. And those things doesn't mean the machine is live. Personally i think a machine without games, apps or demos is dead. (off course always will be a hope of a resurrection)
  12. 14 - GALAXIAN Atari screenshots The screens say all. Atari have a great playability in this game. C64 screenshots
  13. I wouldn't let others' exaggerations/opinions distract me from the truth or from what I like doing. I think you mean "I wouldn't let others' exaggerations/opinions distract me from my opinion or from what I like doing." 779 games? I can't imagine where he obtain this info. Considering JOE GUNN is on of the best of 2007 and 2008, I wan't to review all these 779 games. I have in mind an amount near to 25. Not games, everything. Demos, Graphics, Sids, Utilities, Games. mmm... It's enough with top 5 games and top 5 demos (2007-2008) for the analysis. But who will launch the list on C64?
  14. 779 games? I can't imagine where he obtain this info. Considering JOE GUNN is on of the best of 2007 and 2008, I wan't to review all these 779 games. I have in mind an amount near to 25.
  15. Look what Wall-e found on year 3000 :
  16. Atari 2007 game entries : Atari 2008 game entries : It will be interesting to see a brief of C64 complete productions those years.
  17. Don't care. C64 users feel his 16 colors are enough and that's right. With some effort they can reproduce good pictures and make good games with 8/16 colors. Congratulations! again it's enough and better that many 8bit counterparts. But Atari can do better work with his 128 colors, it has proved in the past and recently on later productions. Don't be confused with arguments like Atari can't get 4 pixels per horizontal line. It's a restriction... ok... but there are own ways how to use many colors on screen and one important thing (don't said before) these 128 colors can be used along different stages along the game. Nowadays, the most of screens are LCD widescreen, goodbye to the artifacts or PAL effects. Welcome to the Atari interlaced screen that don't flicker on a LCD at absolutely (even on old NTSC TVs). Welcome to future Atari games that can use the widescreen area. C64 have a great sprite engine. Easily you can do the most of arcades and create games without effort. On Atari machines, creating a good software (game) cost a lot of brain and effort. Yes, it's hard, but you can get unreachable results. Always C64 users will think his machine can do better everything, because they have no imagination for the Atari power (always think on C64 methods) Honestly, C64 is nothing without his sprites. I can't remember any good C64 game without sprites. However it will be fun, what happens on future years. About the yearly production of C64, it will be good to know how much SOFTWARE (no including images, music, demos) from 2007 or 2008 had been released for the C64. Is dying the C64?
  18. 13 - BLACK LAMP Atari screenshots Well, this time is a later 80 game (1989). Different versions according the capabilities of the machines. C64 use many colors, the final screen is something as a cartoon mode, in the other side Atari use variations of the same color, give a result of medieval aspect. Both, have good music and are different pieces. I'd prefer the Atari version. C64 screenshots
  19. After 10 years nobody will remember the 5200, or 800XL, or C64, or Spectrum... Only one computer will survive with new productions:
  20. Honestly, I use a 1541 since 1985 and stink, I repaired a lot of time along those years. Many time hangs when loading a software, so I had to turn off and on again. Fortunately I bought a 1571 at the later 80's, it's much stronger and most of the problems were resolved. My 1050 drive still work very fine despite I used giant many times more than my commodore drives (since 1984). And i remember very well this situation:
  21. 12 - CHOPLIFTER Atari Choplifter screenshots Atari Choplifter XE screenshots Any of the versions, Atari has the best graphics and gameplay. The first version from 1982 have hires graphics and extraordinary control over the helicopter. The 1988 version have better scrolling effects and have much colors, but less a bit of control. C64 screenshots
  22. 11 - COSMIC TUNNELS Atari screenshots On early year of Atari, this game was very fun! Practically both versions are the same. I prefer the Atari because his colors combinations along of different screen levels. C64 screenshots
  23. 10 - BANDITS Atari screenshots C64 version have a little more colors on his screen, but finally the fast action on Atari side give a great playability. Sirius doesn't use hardware sprites on his programming, they preferred his own set of routines. A great classic! C64 screenshots
  24. 9 - FLAK Atari screenshots Interesting shooter game with vertical scroll, it show the high speed of Atari scroll with smooth motion. Nice Atari intro. C64 screenshots
  25. 8 - Flip and flop Atari screenshots This is one of my favorites games. I played on both platform a lot of time. Practically is equal on both, but there are some little issues with the color on Atari version that make the difference, more color combination along the different levels. C64 screenshots
