  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToIiWMf_XqU&fmt=6 Well, I only can said that this demo is one of the best 3D that I ever had seen on Atari. On this type of game maybe colors are more valuable that resolution. Look this: - 128/256 colors on screen - APAC GTIA mode - Full DLIs on the whole screen - Narrow screen - Full use of 6502 CPU - Full use of memory - Banking memory (on future realeases) - Free (i hope)
  2. It looks great. Incredible the rotation is clean, it not seems 80 wide res On the real Atari 130XE doesn't load the executable. Only read 4 sectors and stop loading on my SIO2SD. Honestly first versions load fine but this and 1.4 version have the same problem on loading. For sure something easy I didn't take care.
  3. 800XL, robust and solid computer. Inside have the same useful features that 65XE.
  4. There is no much to say here that hasn't previously said. We compared both machines from different angles, and the real thing is any Atarian don't think C64 is a great machine. The initial post asking what games on Atari are better than C64 version, was covered a long posts ago. C64 users enter into this post to defend some opinions from his point of view. But some of them enter to provoque Atarian people.
  5. Do u HONESTLY expect anyone who has heard something like the arcade Commando music to prefer it to the Hubbard Commando version? Pokeys do not offer "authentic" sound they offer "cheap" sound and they only reason they sound like arcade machines is that the early-mid 1980s arcade machines used the same type of crap chips in there to keep the costs down. there is absolutely no question that the SID chip music sold c64 software. i would hazard a guess that the pokeys "authentic" sound effects never did. troll on mate. 6. That's also beside the point, CTIA came first and GTIA added features that weren't backwards compatible. It doesn't matter which order they were meant to be released in at all, the important bit is that Atari were willing to add things to the hardware at that point that could lead to software being incompatible. Incompatible? What are you talking? GTIA do all CTIA can do.
  7. Yawn... just another C64 freak with polite words. The whole tread meanwhile is about "vice versa"... C64 guys come along to an Atari forum, telling everyone that the C64 is the deus ex machina, thus not accepting that the A8 has its superiorities. So, please go back to lemon, thanks. I really have nothing to say that will make you look worse for posting this. Everyone else - thank you for your welcomes! This thread has gotten me really interested in the Atari 8-bits. Sadly I'm only re-building my Commodore system at the moment and I have very little space for that, so an Atari machine is not a likely purchase in the near future. Ah well, there are emulators... Another R from lemon
  8. No, Atari cartridge load at zero seconds, C64 Gyruss cartridge load at 3 seconds.
  9. No... GTIA came very early on. CTIA is so rare that virtually nobody here has one. When GTIA came out, the majority had a CTIA so had there been a massive influx of software that required it, users either had to have their existing machine upgraded or not be able to use it; wood_jl said that fixing the A8 to give it more flexibility would introduce incompatibility, i mentioned the GTIA modes in that context as an example of Atari not being shy of doing that. Again... GTIA was designed first, but for time reasons, Atari 8bit systems were released with a reduced prototype CTIA. On 1980, Atari sold the GTIA chip to extend the old machines (as should be), and new 400/800 production came with GTIA. In other words, that was planning before the release of 400/800.
  10. No, popular C64 machines ruins the best 8bit systems, including his own best 8bit C128 system.
  11. Nothing was "shown" to me as being superior. Just some people saying the A8 is better doesn't prove anything, same as you guys keep saying about Rockford's posts. As far as I'm concerned both Gyruss versions are ok, they each have their faults. Pete Actually what we have said about rockfords post are accurate. Selective crap just to elicit a negative reaction. in other words.. trolling. You misunderstand I think. I'm not saying what anyone thinks about Rockford's posts is correct or incorrect, I'm saying that nobody has proven A8 Gyruss is better apart from A8 guys saying it's so. And yet if Rockford posts a comparison and says the C64 version is better he gets told it isn't half the time. There's no "proof" either way. Pete GYRUSS: Only one detail of C64 version is good against Atari version, C64 version use 160x200 res meanwhile Atari use 160x100 res. But despite this: - Atari animations are really good. Anbd don't forget Atari Gyruss is a NTSC version, so if you look on a real NTSC or emulator configured at NTSC you'll find a extraordinary 60fps. - Planet looks better drawed on Atari version with his "worse-res" - Stars move faster and more smoothly - Enemies don't flick on Atari version - C64 version doesn't have perfect collision on enemies, specially when they are so far. - C64 version show some glitches on the video when mixing the text messages on screen It's easy to choose the Atari version, you only need some playing minutes.
  12. Clearly CPC have different colors, but those are not bad. Despite all (no sprites, no HW scroll, no advanced musical chip), I think CPC is superior to C64, it's a powerful machine. 100 Amstrad games
  13. Welcome Tom and Lee! Good to hear something from you. It was 25 years ago, my world was an Atari and Analog magazine on hand.
  14. You posted this already.. The Atari version is much closer to the arcade. I know as I own Gorf. You should really try owning some hardware before making these silly and uneducated statements here. Not only does the c64 version sounds a bit off and the game mechanics are wrong. Looks like GORF but does not play like gorf. Also the Atari version you are showing is a 16k cart and STILL beats the c64 Jump up and down as you usually do but remember I have the ACTUAL arcade to compare with. Sorry to burst your bubble.. At the beginning I tried to alert Rockford about bad comparisons. But with some attempts, I believe that's a waste of time. Some people (as me) look the games technologically, others (the most) look at the viewpoint of playability. Because games are not only pictures, there are animations, fps, sounds, music, etc. Rockford find what version have some blocks of hi-res definition, how many sprites is used, How many color have,.... Not really the best way. The result is 50% Rockford comparisons are argueable, because Atari have better performance. Maybe Rockford can't understand his own problem... Rockford, I give you an exercise comparison, and you'll find interesting results: - Do POPEYE Atari and C64 comparison - Please put all your concentration here
  15. Hi Marci and Sal, I hope Sal will recover soon. Good health is very important and I wish strenght to Sal. Please, tell us how progress go on. Take care Mario
  16. Off course, Atari 8bit computers has the most largest game selection and the best versions. So far.
  17. I think those type of text mode flicks a lot on PAL monitors, but works fine on a NTSC. However, taking care about mixing with the same luminance will reduce the flickering drastically. I don't see the program listing, but it seems the registers change on any position of screen. This should be on a VBI toi get a better screen mixing.
  18. Could you send the test with autobooteable DOS with TurboBasic and test files on it?
  19. Honestly, I think if an Atari game doesn't have DLIs on screen, only is fast production for money, the minimal effort for money.
  20. This was answered before. Because, most of the production on those years are polish productions, and most of them only have monocrome TVs.
  21. What is ROAR ? game on A8 or C64 or some other 8bit beast ? ROAR or TANK (this is the arcade name) for C64. It's a great ikari warrior type game but with a tank with cooperative multiplayer. Really is fantastic and it's a great game on C64, mixing hi amd med res. Use all color along the different stages. I like the classic sound of Patton movie in this game. My favorite vertical scrolling game of all times. I found it as 'TANK'. Played it for two minutes maybe.... In my opinion there is no chance its better then Ikari Warriors in any way... One enemy soldier attacking me ? badly drawn. Running away from me ... Tank has machine gun with range of maybe 30-40 pixels.. I had to corner him against the rock and then kill him (kinda iteresting detail, put a smile on my face ) Ran into a tank battle was fast and stupid... Sorry man, can not see anything good in it... Please, try Ikari Warriors (UK version) with a friend, play long enough to reach places where there are two tanks, get in them (hold fire while close to the tank) and make mayhem in duet You have not played enough time. Initially the tank have very reduce amount of poewr, more gorup of letters you take, more powerful your tank will be. Soon you will find: - Lots of enemy atacking you. Human enemies do little damage, the most dangerous enemy are the tanks or grenades. - Range machine gun will increase with the letter bonus you caught. - On multiplayer mode, one player move the tank and use the machine gun. Other player take control of the bombs with his own movement. - Second world war is always an interesting topic, it's a long way to reach the final Nazi barracks. I played both games and finished both. So, maybe it's a matter of taste.

  23. C64 programmers need at least 3 years of intensive programming on Atari machines to say an opinion about what type of game would be better on C64 or Atari. Just Operation Wolf is an good example how Atari can do with more than 32 colors on screen. It's a pity nobody try on the past, maybe because there are some clones there.
  24. Here some artwork from Animal Party
