  1. I'm not understanding what warrants such an aggressive, confrontational response here.

    ...anyway...

I have a small handful of novelties that I poke around for every so often looking for a deal. Over the years this patient approach earned me a nice, but modest collection of Dreamcast hardware. I got the official arcade stick for $30 ($100) and Samba de Amigo Maracas for $50 ($125+) among other stuff.

There are some things however that you've just gotta bite the balls and pay the price. I spent maybe a decade waiting to find a decent price on an ASCII Pad FT but they're too in-demand. I eventually just paid the $100 for one on impulse. Jaguar stuff definitely falls into this category. Sellers are aware of the high prices this shit sells for. They know what they have, and buys know what they're looking for. The odds that I'll ever encounter one in the wild is slim to none, I don't ever see even common retro-gaming stuff in thrift stores anymore. Back in the day I'd almost always see some obscure old gaming stuff on my trips to Savers.

I don't have a Jaguar and never have, it's just been a morbid curiosity for a few years now. The price of entry is waaay too much for a novelty, especially given my budget. But maybe if I feel like scratching that itch in a year or two and haven't touched my aforementioned Dreamcast stuff in a while, I'll see if selling it could fetch enough $$$ to live my Jaguar fantasy. Once the GameDrive has CD support, the full library of games will be about as accessible to me as they've ever been (or will be anytime soon).

  2. I don't have a Jaguar and doubt that will change anytime soon, but it will eventually. So I just want to say: please keep making games!

However, here's my take on the genre: I grew up with the original Castlevania so while I enjoyed Symphony of the Night, I was disappointed when they started designing ALL the sequels like that. Plus as I get older my time/patience for games isn't what it once was. I often find myself looking for linear, short(ish) games I can blast through in a few hours. My gaming sessions only last about an hour each time now, I'm not laying in bed with Dreamcast controller in-hand for hours every night. I want to be making progress, seeing action rather than exploring a lot.

I'd imagine it would take a lot of creativity to design a Metroidvania with all its backtracking, so I'd be very interested to follow the development process even if I don't have a way to play it. That's why I started following the Jag scene a couple years ago, to watch its fanbase making cool shit.

It's a popular genre, obviously! and it would add something new to the Jag library. I love the look of the demo, very authentic.

  3. Pardon me as this isn't Jaguar-related, I've just seen multiple devs here mention using Jasc PSP7 and have no where else to ask. It's also a bitch to Google (just pulls up Corel PSP results).

Sometimes I will layer a raster image atop another with similar colors, requiring a shadow effect around the topmost layer. For years I used a plugin called Eye Candy 4000 for its Corona effect, it did a good enough job of that. Here's the effect of applying Corona in black to an image:

    QXlo5L1.png

To see Corona in-use including its options, [CLICK].

Here's a couple examples of how I've used this effect in the past: [ONE], [TWO].

    So, my question:

Unfortunately I lost my copy of the Eye Candy 4000 installer at some point so I can't use it on my current laptop. I can remote into my old one when it's absolutely needed, but it's a pain.

How else can I achieve this type of effect in PSP? Do it have any similar effects natively? Are there any PSP7 plug-ins you'd recommend (if any still exist)?

    _________________________

If not possible with PSP7, I also have GIMP installed and am open to using some other lightweight image editor to achieve this.

Any info is appreciated, thanks in advance!

  4. Nuon... A couple weeks ago the topic of light synthesizes came up in conversation. I mentioned how long it took Minter's VLM to gain widespread appreciation. In its earlier forms it wasn't really understood, then he had the misfortune of it being on Jaguar CD. ~30 years passed since his earliest ones before such a thing was exposed to a wide audience and appreciated thanks to Xbox 360.

    .

I completely forgot about the Nuon... so that makes two kicks to Minter's crotch before the 360!

I'm surprised to hear Nuon players/games haven't become as expensive as other retrogaming hardware, especially obscure stuff. I assume that might not be the case if controllers weren't prohibitively expensive. Speaking of, I just took a look at eBay sold listings to get a feel for prices and yikes, usually $200+just for one of them! Not just that, but the majority of these are Logitech controllers which suffer from input lag according to this review. Apparently the input lag was a known issue reported to Logitech in testing, yet they did not fix problem before release - despite assuring testers that they would.

On 12/7/2020 at 9:05 PM, Chris Brockman said:

Most of them were recalled for some kind of bug.  Very few original boxed copies exist in the wild, the only one I know about K3V from NUON-Dome has.  It was supposed to be released again with the fix for the bug but VM Labs went bustola and about 300 copies were distributed as a free Demo in the NUON-Dome forum at the end.

Interesting... so what we've got here is a rare game on a rare console with rare controllers? I've been involved in enough niche hobbies over the years to know that wherever these enthusiasts with a Nuon and controller are, they probably thrilled to see the news of this re-release.

Have you played Equinox (Solstice 2) ? It came out on the Super NES. It's by the Pickford Brothers rather than the original developer however.

I haven't played it, but! While writing that post I knew I had seen other games that are very similar. Only Landstalker on Genesis was coming to mind, but it wasn't that. Couldn't figure out if I was just making it up, but you might've solved the mystery.

  6. I'm in the USA so neither of these were released on platforms very accessible to me.

Never heard of Head Over Heels so I looked it up on YouTube, looks a lot like Solstice on the NES. Solstice was released a couple years later, so maybe it was inspired by Head Over Heels.

Impossamole I've heard of thanks to Turbo Views which I highly recommend if you're ever interested in a TG-16 game but want a short video review before buying. He's been at it since 2009 and it's the most consistent show on YouTube, if you showed someone the 1st and last episodes they wouldn't be able to tell which was which. It's still a small channel after all this time so it must be a labor of love.

  7. When I'm laying around half brain-dead I gravitate towards familiar topics like video games, so off to AA I went. This thread's title caught my eye so I ended up reading through all the Jag Programming forums, never really poked around in there before... and wow. The mere fact that something like rB+ existed as an accessible entry point to virtually anyone makes this scene special enough, but it's so much more.
I didn't know there were so many underlying pieces from so many different contributors. Everything's open and free, nobody's keeping their toys locked away. There's seemingly perpetual active support/additions. Just one example, I knew U-235 is a sound engine but did not know it was released in 2011 and Linkovich is in its thread keeping things rolling to this very day.
Above all else though... I thought I was a patient guy. Nope. Receiving a bug report in the form of "it didn't work" alone takes a bite out of my patience. I have no idea how many of you, ggn in particular, remained so helpful in such a timely manner despite many discouraging things going on. There's the aforementioned "it didn't work" (continuously, even after being educated why that's useless), complaining about the tools or referring to non-existent bugs within them. Whining, snide remarks, sample projects being monetized, unfinished works being stolen and sold... so much shit that would've made me throw in the towel a long time ago.

On the other hand I did see the kind of positivity that makes you want to stick with things despite some headaches. The threads I enjoyed most were made by enthusiastic individuals persevering through all obstacles, making sure they gave it their all before taking time away from someone else by asking for help. It was fun moving from page to page, seeing ideas become reality, projects evolving. Everything's finally put together, the placeholder title/graphics are replaced with something to give the game its own identity, and just like that there +1 to add to the Jag's game library.

    In other words... cool beans.

  8. I don't have a Twitter account, don't browse Twitter. All social media platforms can be cesspools but Twitter's design makes it particularly bad. If I'm going to rot my brain cells scrolling down a feed for 5 minutes then I want to see things like inspiring travel photos, insightful comments, or funny jokes from friends I care to share experiences with. I don't give a shit about anyone's loud, uneducated, emotional opinions - be Twitter's specialty.

Then I saw one of Jeff's "Morning Sheep Time" posts a year or two ago and I dug it. I've never been cut out for the responsibility of having pets of my own but enjoy a good meow or head-scratch once in a while, as long as I can go home after without cleaning up any shit. I'm not a morning person. I'd rather sleep in than have to wake up at sunrise to feed an impatient cat. I definitely would not want 15+ animals spread out across a large farm waiting for me every morning.

I will, however, Google Jeff Minter Twitter every couple of weeks when I need something relaxing to chill out to at the end of my week. If social media must exist, this is how you do it right.

    I guess I'll have to try psp7. I'm using v6.

I was a part of a niche animation community primarily from 2000-2004, dabbled in it later. Our tools of the trade were PSP7+Animation Shop 3 which came bundled together. They're separate programs but were also designed to work in tandem.
Since then I never had reason to upgrade since it does everything I need, and none of the shit that I don't.

Anyway, sorry for the brief derailment.
Watching the gameplay video, I'm finding myself melting into my chair listening to this relaxing music and seeing those colors... very relaxing vibe. Back when I was in college there was a time where I'd get home from my afternoon/evening classes exhausted and just lay in bed for hours playing puzzle games deep into the night. This would've been a great game for that.

I don't think purging all of the posts is necessary, as this thread is just that, a thread in which discussion has been held. Yes, there are way too many posts that are less than helpful. This is why there's an index in the first post in this thread. Having said that, we definitely do need a website that hosts all of the helpful information regarding Kieren, something that lays out the information succinctly and without fluff, which gives users a very clear look at his various misdeeds. This thread in itself was never going to serve that purpose, but it's been a great repository for all of the information given by those who have come forward about their dealings with him. As such, it works fine as a repository for raw data - we just now need to lay out all of that data in a way that is easy for those who aren't familiar with him to see how he operates.

I don't see the purpose of locking this thread. However, it could do with some cleaning up.

I typed what I just posted before reading this comment, but I agree - and fortunate timing for me to write that reply!

  11. I posted a few pages back with some scatterbrained thoughts about how the information accumulated here should be made useful in the long term. I've been pondering it since, have let the thoughts digest a bit, and here's what I have to say. But first:

I've always had a fascination with scammers and fraudsters, I've been reading up on them for a good 15+ years now. A few things are common among all of them: these people will never change, it's all they know. You might throw them in prison for 20 years, you might publicly expose them to the entire world, but they will eventually be back to doing what they do.

A couple of my go-to examples:

    • Peter Popoff - Televangelist who was publicly exposed in the 80s to the entire world. He was smart enough to stay out of the public eye for a bit, but every decade or so he comes back with something new. His current thing, which I can't believe people fall for, is Miracle Debt-Cancellation Water. You drink this water and one day wake up to find all this extra money in your bank account, just enough to pay your debts. Praise Jesus!
    • Kevin Trudeau - Like Popoff, he made a lot of money. Unlike Popoff, he wasn't smart enough to disappear between fuck-ups. He got into legal trouble every year or two and is now in prison.

These guys are at the top of the fraudster ladder. At the bottom of that ladder are the Kieren Hawkens of the world. But regardless of success or cunning, the thing they all have in common is they're going to keep doing what they do until they're in the grave.

When everyone started coming together and sharing their experiences here, it was like an eruption after years of rumblings below the surface. It's always hard to imagine at the time but these things always eventually settle down and life moves on. So what purpose has this thread had, and what purpose would we like it to continue having? In my opinion, 3 things:

    1.) Long term - Warn Would-Be Employers

As I said before, someone needs to write a clear, concise summary for those outside of the scene - future employers, book publishers, event organizers, etc. They need to know that he's going to provide shoddy work and damage their brand's credibility, but more importantly he'll leave them with a big mess to clean up afterwards.

Many of these Retro-themed publications and events are a labor of love, they aren't the most profitable thing in the world. They're the result of passion and Kieren will kill their passion... then as they're left to clean up the mess, trying to undo the damage to their brand, Kieren will be using your brand to add credibility to his name a la Retro Gamer.

2.) As an archive of the nitty gritty details

For people that are connected to this scene enough to want to read every single page of this thread, they can use this as education as to the scope of the damage he's caused. A lot of people who normally keep quiet about things have come out of the shadows to tell their stories now.

3.) As a sort of group therapy, showing support for each other

These hobbies are supposed to be fun, a positive experience. People aren't here for the drama, but it's a testament to their passion for retrogaming that they've stuck around in spite of it. Tragedies are... well, tragic, but they can bring communities together. As everyone has come together here to share stories with each other, it has made the community tighter - and therefore, further blocking Kieren out of it.

By now it appears the most damning evidence has already been presented, yet the replies still have enough momentum for the pages to keep piling on. Some have suggested people refrain from commenting on particular things or that separate threads should be made. This would require mass cooperation which us humans aren't very good at. For for what I proposed, there just has to be a few people - or even one person - to achieve the long term benefits of #1. Otherwise this thread can continue to play out as it would.

I think everybody here wants the same things to result from this thread, there's just some disagreement on how to achieve it. Those are my 2 cents.

Could someone non-UK-based be able to upload a mirror? Like I said, the video is essentially public domain, so feel free to rip it off YouTube and upload it again as much as you want. Having it on Dailymotion seems to be a good idea as well.

  14. I'm not close enough to that situation to know either way so I believe it, but could see others in the future having difficulty separating fact from fiction.

Also, couldn't figure out to quote you into an edit so I'll reply now:

I fully agree with this, but for some of us he just won't let us do that

Indeed, a lot of people haven't had that luxury... you being the best example I know of. I had to deal with swarms of 4chan kids as a moderator/tools dev for this online game earlier last decade. I thought they were bad, but I'd honestly prefer that to this shit.

I should have made more clear that I'm fully on you guys' side - this dude is a total piece of shit and I'm fortunate that I haven't had to deal with him. I've just been meaning to mention this for a while speaking through my psych lens. If I was in a similar situation back in ~2012 about those 4chan clowns, I definitely would have overwhelmed the listener with too much information as I was too close to the matter.

I would like to see this thread result the community coming together as a united front against this douche, while also remaining useful years down the road when he tries to pull this shit on new people. He won't be changing he ways anytime soon - it's all he knows.

    No we don't.
Those that are following this thread know exactly what it is about and where we are up to on a daily basis.
This isn't a narrative. It's not the Silmarillion.
People aren't coming in and thinking "what's this all about?"
People come because they know exactly what is going on and virtually every post is commenting and quoting a specific point.
The vast majority of those who follow this have been reading since the beginning and come in when there is new material. They pick up from where they left off.
It's not a book where you can lose the thread of the plot.
The Plot (and I know Kieren would love the use of that word) is simple, he's an obnoxious, self-important, talentless, irritating little fake who is jealous of other people's success, subconsciously knows his social and professional shortcomings and subsequently has pilloried the community for a decade and a half.
    Now the tide has turned.
If you think there is even a vague possibility that people here are incorrect in their accusations and assertions then perhaps this is not the thread for you.

You misunderstood me. Of course anyone bothering to read this thread knows what's up or they wouldn't read it.

I'm saying if you want this thread to result in preventing Kieren from talking himself into more writing jobs in the future, you need an effective way to communicate all this info to naive publishers. Something concise that explains the extent of his bullshittery in a way that makes it clear this isn't like any other forum drama, this is one assclown fucking up what should be a fun hobby for dozens of people for over a decade... and a guy that isn't even knowledgeable about the topics he writes about, he just presents bullshit with enough confidence to fool those that don't know better.

I'm about to fall asleep so can't find it now but earlier on in this thread (maybe first 10-15 pages?) somebody commented that they have a book coming out soon that Kieren contributed to, but they didn't realize the extent of his bullshitting until now that the book is on its way out. This is the target audience I'm referring to.

  16. I'd like to point something out that's in the interest of everyone here yet some of you may not realize it due to how close you are (and have been) to this burden. I am very much an outsider here. I just developed a morbid curiosity about the Jaguar a couple years ago and stuck around mostly as a lurker.

I believe it was Sauron that added the "index of the more notable posts" into the OP. That's great to have for people involved enough to want to read every last detail, but you must remember that you need a concise summary for people that aren't that invested.

Think about other examples of "drama" you've seen in such niche forums/communities. Personally, I've never fucking seen anything like this in nearly 20 years of being a part of groups like this. Not only is it ongoing for what, 10-15 years now? but - sometimes you can tell that the people on one side of an argument are bigger dicks than the other side, but it's never 100% one-sided like this with one man standing alone as the biggest dick against such a large and varied group of people. Even his former goons have jumped off the sinking ship that is the USS Hawken.

Suppose you're killing time at a bookstore, flipping through this month's issue of Retro Video Game and Vintage Toilet Enthusiast magazine. You see an article written by Kieren. He talked his way into another gig and subsequently dragged down the quality of this otherwise spectacular periodical. You want to contact the publisher and warn them of the effects he's having and will continue to have on the magazine. If you link a 43-page thread with a TOC nearly 100 lines long you're going to look very emotional, not objective. It'll just perpetuate that "it's just another typical forum drama," "there's 2 sides to every story" assumption.

    -

So I appreciate the efforts put into that TOC as does everyone else here I'm sure, but you should also have something in writing that's very brief. Make clear the things he's done wrong, how many people he has affected, what type of people he has affected (magazine publishers, game developers, etc), stuff like that. Afterwards, you can provide a link to further info.

An important detail to note here is how many of you seem to be the types that would rather move on with your life as soon as you can rather than kick up a big stink about it - but all sorts of people like that have been coming out of the woodwork now as a result of how far-reaching this issue is. If he didn't continue causing problems, your stories would have remained untold.

  17. I read Kieren's response shortly after it was posted, but sometimes it takes my brain a few days to digest things...

When I first read it I wondered "Why the fuck does the Octav1us section span 4 pages? With 2 edits???" Some of these other people have been his enemies for 10+ years, wouldn't they be the ones with the longest parts? Hmm...

These quotes are from his PDF and an alleged sockpuppet email Octav1us received (with similar phrasing). I get it now. He's furious that she's met with sympathy and care when she talks publicly about mental health issues, but it doesn't work when he does it. He doesn't seem to realize that it doesn't work like magic, it won't work if you act like a douche.

Edit: and he even snuck in a "but I'm not angry, bro" after his angry rant!

I'm just now reading the past few pages of replies but I agree with above about it being hard to find stuff - it took me a while to find the page this quote from the email. Reminding people to be concise is good, but the thread will be huge either way. It'd be cool if someone could make a Table of Contents to edit into the OP like was done for the Coleco Chameleon thread.
