  1. Don't be sorry--I missed this thread the first time around and had a great time reading it!

Sorry to revive old threads, but having been inspired by Zero's experiment, I have decided to pit Video Chess on level 7 against Mac Chess on Strongest setting. Having heard that each move can take up to 10 hours, this might take a while....

    Here's the log so far:

    Mac (white) / Atari (Black)

    1. e2-34 / e7-e5

    2. Ng1-f3 / Nb8-c6

    3. Bf1-c4 /

  2. I have a really nice set of these, boxed, like new, with instructions. They work all right, but I think the multiple cordless phones and wireless networks in my apartment building interfere with them. I had to pretty much sit right next to the TV/transmitter box.

They look just like the ones in this eBay offering, except they are boxed. I'll get a pic up this evening.

    $30 shipped. Batteries not included.

Camera troubles, anyone want to auction a cart for me so I can get a better one? :)

  3. I bought a new TV just about a year ago to replace my 25" coax-only TV that I bought from some guy on craigslist for $50. I went in ready to spend some cash, but I wasn't at all impressed by the HD stuff, HD cable is more expensive, there were no HD players, and I don't watch that many DVDs anyway, etc. I bought a flatscreen tube for under $300 and was happy with it. I'm still happy with it. The picture is nice and clear. So put me in the camp that doesn't care about HD...for now, anyway.

Also, it's worth noting that we're on a site where the masses are still playing pixelated games from 1980. Just sayin'.

  4. These are great ideas, but I'm guessing that implementation might be tricky. Still, worth submitting to the web site comments section here? I would love to see something like this added to the AA database. I know that the eBay Developer Tools are extensive and gathering price data is fairly trivial, so this might be worth looking into for someone experienced with the eBay SDKs.

Using paper and PDF for this project is like heading into Beirut with a musket.

Why re-create an entire list when all you need to do is enhance a list that already exists?

Wouldn't the easiest and least amount of work be to add a few fields to either the AtariAge or AtariMania database that holds pricing data and allows people to add pricing information and dates? (moderated of course).

    • The design should allow pricing for several pre-defined levels of completeness (i.e., sealed, complete, loose, etc)
    • Each entry needs to have a date
    • Entries need to be kept, not overwritten so that trends, statistics, and historical values could be calculated.

It would also be nice that when an auction pops up, the auction could be linked to a game in the database and the system would monitor and capture the final price. This feature would only work on auctions listing a single title unless some kind of weighting or averaging algorithm is used -- but either way, it could be done.

Plus, this is something best presented in a dynamic and constantly updated medium. Paper and PDF just don't really cut it.

  5. I don't think this is the same Atari, but it's a story with a happy ending for a lucky person (not me):

I was on my way home from La Cantina and saw a cardboard box on a curb that read “Atari 2600 w/ games, works – FREE”. Normally there’s never any good free stuff on curbs but this was an amazing find, I couldn’t beleive it!! I got home, cleaned it up, and in no time I was jumping barrels and eating pellets!

Looks like a pretty nice score.

I'm glad someone got them instead of it ending up in the trash. Now i'm curious if there was anything good in the lot. Unfortunately I live just a little too far from Lowell to make the drive worth it.

What makes you think someone got it instead of the trash truck? The word "gone" seems pretty ambiguous.........

  6. I've been trying to get rid of mine for years. No one wants it.

The sad thing is that when I bought it in 1996, I had never seen one before and I paid $20 at a thrift. Even with all the games, that was a poor decision on my part!

  7. This is SOOOO true. I remember finally calling Atari directly, and they sent me the little mail order catalog so that i could finally get my greedy little hands on BallBlazer and Rescue on Fractalas, which I think had been pulled from stores or something by the time I wrote. It got so bad with them not releasing 5200 games that we eventually bought the 2600 adapter just so we would have something NEW to play.

But I really knew things had gone bad when I bought Tax Avoiders for 99 cents at Kay-Bee. Never thought of it as a crash, but this was an obvious sign that something was WRONG.

'Course I remember it. Although I didn't think of it as a 'crash'.. i just thought of it as "Where the heck are all the new 5200 games that are supposed to be coming out?!?!?"

  8. This is a pretty awesome find. Those hippos tend to break very easily, given all the stress they are put through to get their marble meals! I'd totally love to have a nice minty one, but I think I'd probably just play it because I love the game so much, Sheer genius.

Edit: I had no idea they were still making NEW copies of this game! I guess I just have that classic gamer mindset that these games are all old and hard to find. I might pick myself up one of the rereleases.

    Still a nice find, though!

Hungy Hungry Hippos was sealed $3.

  9. It really depends on your personal taste--there are SO MANY NES games to choose from in so many categories. Here are the games I have and like, in rough order of how great they are:

    Tetris

    Ice Hockey

    Double Dribble

    R.C. Pro-Am

    Faxanadu

    Rad Racer

    Golf

    Zeldas

Wizards and Warriors I & II

    Castlevania

    RBI Baseball

    Kirby

I have some others, but these are the ones I play most. Mostly because they are the ones I played as a kid. Lately I am playing TONS of R.C. Pro-Am. I love this game!

  11. Ballblazer is by far the best game out of these. Dig Dug is a close second for me; mostly for nostalgia. However, when Ballblazer came out, my brother and I would have epic battles. The Wico controllers are awesome for this game and allow maximum manueverability, and I think the scoring system is ingenious. The music just totally rocks. The game is fast-paced and it takes a lot of skill to really master it (in particular, thinking of the 3-pointer here)... I also like the storyline of a futuristic game...I have to admit that I actually wrote some Ballblazer "fanfic" when I was a kid. It just totally sucked me in.

I agree that the game is not nearly as good on the 7800. The Playstation edition is also an insult to the original.

When I first discovered emulation, it was because I wanted to play Ballblazer. In the days before PayPal and online registration, I actually sent an international check to England for the guy who wrote the Rainbow emulation program because I wanted it in full-screen. That's how much Ballblazer meant to me!

    Vote Ballblazer, my fellow Terrans!
