There is no way lawsuit loving, IP protecting Atari SA is going to open themselves up to any kind of situation were you can easily use illegal roms right out of the box.
You're going to have to dual boot or wipe it to roll you own. It might have emulators for their IP, but no one else's.
It's a PC for God's sake. There will be root hacks and alternate bootable images in a matter of days and that's only because waiting for shipping!

Retropie license prohibits commercial use.
Of course it does. I'm proposing the least effort "hidden" demo done without any morals. It's only prohibited if caught as there're retropie based business popping up and shutting down in complete violation of the commercial licensing! We are dealing with a sleazy Gameband CEO here on a very tight timing window and extremely low budget.
We already know AMD is the chip partner so likely the finished product is a Ryzen-Vega Single Board Computer like one proposed picture shown below:

Raspberry Pi isn't the only cheap single-board computer that would fit in that case, and we already know it's going to use AMD bits. My guess it resembles one of these cheap Ryzen things.
Ah so true as they could just use the Linux / retropie code for these though they may need to download/recompile Linux drivers and rebuild retropie from code....easier (low hanging fruit) to use a base raspberry Linux and base retropie as you only need to change the menu graphics and add the Atari logo everywhere! Plus the raspberry pie is cheaper half the cost of AMD's new Ryzen SBCs.
From the little we get from press releases the "real" finished design is very likely intended to be one of these Ryzen SBCs. Actually for anyone that bored, checking which Ryzen SBC board matches the locations of ports on the Atari VCS would likely be the intended design for the final product.
Anyone find Ryzen Single Board Computers as ATX boards would be too big?

Would't those edit be in the history anyway?
When I looked at the history I didn't see any edit/revert ... given I didn't put that info there to begin with and I am not sure if zzip meant to say he edited it or if JamesD did it or someone else, whatever it is I'd say let it be.
In the end I liked this article:
http://ethw.org/Why_Instruction_Sets_No_Longer_Matter
it wasn't really CISC vs RISC but fast integrated caches and in general memory hierarchy that mattered and still does and can explain why the x64 is still so competitive with its CISC ISA.
Excellent link! Caches (L1,L2,L3,L4) and their coherency schemes matter most when it comes to performance.

This is SO lame. I mean seriously for a running retrobox all they had to do is install retropie on a raspberry pie and change the menu a bit to hide the origin of the software and slap on some Atari logos ? Hardware wise after installing a raspberry pie just solder in the lights! Though to match the physical USB locations would need have to solder in the spread out USB connectors and would not even need to attach more than one... as only one would be needed for the joystick. I could have put a quickly tested demo like this together using the Ataribox shell in a few hours.
Unless they demo it working tomorrow AND show the circuitry they are just being deceitful by advertising April order date.

As you might expect because of the different markets (us in the US standardizing on disks, for instance), the commercial life of the C-64 here in the US was a bit shorter than it was in the UK and Europe. A lot of us moved on to more powerful computers like the PC or Amiga by the latter part of the 80s (the US was a more affluent market at the time). So I'd say 1982 - 1988 would be about when most of us were most active on the C-64. We missed out on a lot of the better late life releases.
Very well said. I moved on to the PC by late 80's and I had a close friend with an Amiga. I still had just a few late C64 games that were great .. Three Stooges (I think only Americans can appreciate) , IM II, Airborne Ranger, California Games being the late rare gems in my collection. I was not buying any new C64 after those and well was not pirating C64 anymore... moved on to PC and Amiga.

I wouldn't mind a new console which was easy as the 2600. No patching, no instillation, no online requirements; just plug a cart in & play. But this looks like a download/streaming box, so It's not too exciting; it's the exact opposite of what I want.
Yep there will be apps (why no <insert favorite app> questions) and lots and lots of online updates and versions. Just another complex OS that needs constant updating.

All the ones below I spent many hours playing and don't think I ever saw them on c64 favorite lists other than mine. I'm too lazy to check if any of them are in the top 100.
Impossible Mission II
Satan's Hollow
Gamestar GFL Championship Football
Super Bowl Sunday
Amazon (Windham Classics text/graphic adventure)
Treasure Island (Windham Classics text/graphic adventure)
Aztec Challenge
Realm of Impossibility
5 On Side Soccer
Great American Cross-Country Road Race
Super Cycle
Three Stooges
GI Joe
Park Patrol
Frogger II
Jouste
Wow the top 100 list is quite UK biased as it does not have some of the most popular games in the USA. So below are some of my favorite games that are often favorites in the USA .. but generally not known or popular in the UK.
Ghostbusters
Beach Head
Beach Head II
Raid Over Moscow
World Games
4th and Inches
Hardball
Test Drive
On Court Tennis
Spy vs. Spy
Blue Max
Karateka
Exploding Fist
Rampage
Zaxxon
Super Zaxxon
Fort Apocalypse
Tapper
BC Quest for Tires
Marble Madness
Moon Patrol
Mario Brothers
Crystal CastlesCommandoFroggerDefenderDig DugJungle Hunt-

And give a shout out for Bubsy and the new official game.
More developments on this as inspiration hits me and I learn new hacks. - Doc Clu
Very well done! Thanks!

Ooh, that's a cool idea. The C64DTV came out before flash cards were everywhere. Do you know of a how-to for this?
I liked the blue one that was shaped like a Ms. Pac-Man arcade machine, with the twisty stick for Pole Position. Is the Pac-Man controller as difficult/uncomfortable to hold as it looks?
This guy did the hack though he sawed off the plastic for the batteries. Not sure what I plan to do but need another in the event I mess up the mod. The Svideo mod would be nice also as the picture is well a little rough with composite.

robot city games in binghamton ny is a glorious arcade
Oh that's cool. Next time I'm in Binghamton I'll have to stop by .. before I hit the Water Street Brewing Company!

We will wait and see what happens the next months. My advice to you: If you dont like it, dont buy it.
Most of us are pretty confident we will not even have the opportunity to buy it. Feargal Mac does not exactly have a good past in delivering his promises. As I stated before if it actually ships I'll buy it when it's on clearance for under $50.

says less than nothing.
Perhaps we'll see more soon, but I remain skeptical about it being "so much more than" anything currently available. I have plenty of "connected devices" in my "today's living room" and would need a lot more compelling reason to want this besides it being vaguely Atari-themed.
Well we know it's basically a nice looking overpriced Steam Machine with streaming (likely Netflix, Hulu, Pandora etc). and an interface to an on online Atati cryptocurrency based web portal.
Sounds like a huge fail to me! By the way I'll be the first one one to buy one of these once they are quickly moved to clearance and selling for less than $50. This is assuming it actually ships which now I'm guessing is well below 50% chance.

So I had to make an Amazon order for random stuff.... so I snuck a 3B+ when my wife wasnt looking. Im so ashamed...
If you have a kid just tell your wife it's for a STEM project. My son writes scratch programs for his robot. I made a retropie SD image for my son's GoPiGo robot. My son loves that he can swap SD cards, hook up his robot to the TV/game controller and play video games!
My wife was not thrilled but at least I got my retropie robot to play video games.

I still don't see Atari listed in the GDC exhibitor list. Maybe they are just making the announcement during the same time, or maybe they will be at AMDs booth ?
Gee why am I not surprised ? I doubt AMD is willing host Atari as Atari surely should have their own booth. Seriously look at all the no name companies at GDC that can afford a booth surely Atari could afford a measly small booth.

Have any video capture cards gotten smaller these days? Assuming that shell is real, what other boards could fit in there? That question is not confined to older consoles. I am sure there are plenty of off the shelf crap boards that run some emulators can fit in there.
Raspberry Pie

So I went to Barcade Jersey City, NJ and played the following:
Mappy
Rampage
Rolling Thunder
Metal Slug 2
Tapper
I like to play video games first then drink otherwise I'm sure I would not play near as long.I'm going to head to the Brooklyn Barcade sometime next week as I want to play:Berzerk
Dig Dug
Satan's Hollow
Q*bert

Gamestop's recent move towards toys and other trinkets reeks of desperation, and the stores are a cluttered mess because of it. And their stuff is usually marked up, so they're not even competing on price.
..until items go on clearance. Just last week the clearance table at the local GameStop had about 20 of these tacky Christmas stormtrooper sweaters for $2. I got one to wear for the yearly tacky Christmas sweater day at work! It was marked $34.99 retail. Who the hell would pay that ?

I'm actually hoping GameStop closes all their stores and so I can buy up all the used 3DS games for pennies on the dollar.
-
And there are a few stores left.

That's great! The best line I found:
"Please stop sending us photos of abandoned blockbusters. That's like us sending you photos of your dead grandparents."

Look at the old Atari magazine for the typical prices:

Probably because the manager got on her/him after you left and she/he claimed it was discrimination because she/he is transgendered, lol.
Oh definitely a different server. I know exactly who the transgender server was as I have been to that restaurant a few times before. It's very obvious who the transgender server was. Even my 5 year old at the time asked if that server was a girl or boy as even he notice voice did not match the appearance. I responded I'm not sure that person knows. My wife was pissed at me for saying that as she needed a big boy "discussion" with our son about it.

New Atari Console that Ataribox?
in Atari 2600
Posted · Edited by thetick1
Read the whole article.. wow IF what he said is legit they really have bad PMs and likey non existent or extremely bad QA testing!
Atari says it had an unspecified issue with its hardware partner on the gamepad, and that caused them to abort the initial launch. But the way execs tell it, that one issue triggered a full audit of the project, which brings us to the awkward state of things today.
"As we started digging a little deeper, we found there were more things that were maybe 90 percent of where we wanted to be instead of 100 percent," says Arzt.
And now, it's been long enough that the company's considering whether it should move to a newer, faster AMD processor than the Bristol Ridge chip it originally planned to use. Which could mean a longer wait
