  1. Hello, All!

I have published VGBAnext 6.1.5, a new version of my universal GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, NES, and Famicom emulator:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.emu

VGBAnext is currently on sale for $2.99 and will stay this way for another few days. This release fixes tilt joystick operation and a hangup in the German version of Pokemon Sapphire. Also, pressing the BACK button once will now reveal the action bar.

To remind everyone, I had to remove cheats from the app since Google Play started banning any apps which even mention cheats. All you need to get cheats back though is download this file into your "Downloads" folder:

    http://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/VGBAnext-Cheats.zip

    ALL CHANGES:

    * Fixed tilt joystick operation.

    * Fixed screen rotation after disabling the tilt joystick.

    * Now showing action bar when the BACK button is pressed once.

    * Fixed hangup in the German version of Pokemon Sapphire.

    Have fun!

  2. Hello, All!

The VGBAnext 6.1.2, a new version of my universal GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, NES, and Famicom emulator, is now available from Google Play:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.emu

    http://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/VGBAnext-Cheats.zip

You no longer need to unzip this file. Just place it into your Downloads folder, and the app will do the rest. This VGBAnext release includes a bunch of fixes to the NES emulation and switches to the latest Android Pie SDK. People who had problems with the State Exchange and Box Art Download features should find them fixed now. See below for all the changes.

    ALL CHANGES:
    * Automatically unzipping VGBAnext-Cheats.zip, if found in Downloads.
    * Now searching for ROOT.chts in /sdcard/VGBAnext and all its subfolders.
    * Fixed missing library problem on Android Pie, introduced in version 6.1.1.
    * The empty File Selector search will now also find NES files.
    * Fixed NES sprite rendering at the left edge of screen.
    * Fixed vibrating sound during NES replay.
    * Fixed State Exchange and box art downloads on newer Androids.
    * Switched to Android Pie SDK (Android-28).
    * Oldest supported OS is now Android-9 (Gingerbread).

PS: My ColecoVision emulator, ColEm Deluxe, is currently on $1.99 sale:

I have published ColEm 4.6.6 for Android, a new version of my ColecoVision emulator:
This version includes native support for 64bit ARM CPUs and fixes accelerated audio on newer Androids. Unfortunately, I had to disable Cheatopedia, Cheat Editor, and Cheat Hunter features, since Google Play no longer allows them and bans any apps that come with game cheating features. You can reenable these features yourself, by downloading this file and unzipping it to the "/sdcard/ColEm" folder:
See below for all the changes.
    ALL CHANGES:
    * Added native support for 64bit ARMv8 CPUs.
    * Fixed accelerated sound on newer Androids.
    * Had to remove the cheats, since Google Play no longer allows them and bans apps containing cheats.
    * You can reenable cheats yourself, see help page for details.

  9. You basically need to get a person, demand a domestic supervisor and demand escalation to someone who can make decisions or you're just done.

I have lately started to believe that Google does not have such people, by design. All they have is a bunch of drones and a few of buttons for sending canned responses. There is nobody managing this activity, or making conscious decisions, and that is how they intend it to work.

  10.

Maybe have a chat with nanochess. He has it working in CoolCV.

It is not difficult to make this work if you are writing SN76489 emulation from scratch. ColEm PSG emulation plugs into some EMULib infrastructure that works in terms of frequency / volume pairs. That is what lets ColEm record console tunes directly to MIDI. Also makes fake wave synthesis tricks difficult though. But looking into it anyway, since it all depends on how the trick is being done.

  11.

ColEm does not emulate the digitised speech that can be heard when playing Squish 'em Sam and on a real ColecoVision. Sam can occasionally be heard saying "Squish 'em" and "Wow" when destroying the bugs in the game, as well as "Ouch" when a falling object hits him. Watch a few minutes of this video starting at 1:25 and you will see. https://youtu.be/K8oNO90K5u4?t=85

Oh, THAT. I suspected it would be something of the kind. SN76489 PSG does not really have any wave synthesis hardware, so these effects are produced with some hacks. Looking into them right now, but can't guarantee these can be fully emulated without throwing current SN76489 emulation out of the window.

  12. ColEm still does not emulate the sound in S'Quish Em Sam and Sewer Sam correctly, Maybe I don't have the latest version, I don't know. I think I have version 4.4. It is dated 4-7-2018. MESS and CoolCV has the sound correct. Just some feedback. I do like ColEm.

Chuck, I have tested both games on ColEm-Windows and compared them to video recordings from YouTube. Both games seem to play the sound just fine. Could you please clarify what you mean by incorrect sound emulation in these games? Please, provide as much detail as possible.

  13. What the hell? I hadn't heard that happened. Google can be so stupid and controlling about stuff at times. There is side loading after all, though you obviously would find that impossible to charge for in that case. Hopefully they don't catch or or someone doesn't snitch you out as that's garbage.

My guess is that somebody else has made them ban the app. The reason I am saying this is because they banned iNES under pretense that "it interferes with Android OS or other apps on the device". When I pointed out that this cannot be true, the story suddenly changed to "it allows people to cheat in games, which is prohibited". When I further pointed that the games in question are 20+ years old and do not have anything to do with Android, so Google's Terms of Service hardly apply, they started ignoring me. One definitely needs a lawyer just to talk to Google nowadays, and the point of contact probably shouldn't be these semiautomatic drones with invented names.

  14.

    Hello, All!
The VGBAnext 6.0 console emulator app is now online:
Since Google Play has banned my iNES emulator for an invented reason, and I have not been able to find a human being there who would listen and see the situation for what it is, the iNES functionality has now been folded into VGBAnext. Thus, in addition to GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, and Super GameBoy, the new VGBAnext will also emulate NES, Famicom, DiskSystem, and VS System consoles. That is a total of 8 different consoles in the same app.
    Enjoy!
PS: The fMSX Deluxe app is currently on $1.99 sale:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.fmsx.deluxe

PPS: For the current iNES-Android users, I have a bunch of promo codes that will let you obtain VGBAnext for free. Please, email me the proof of iNES purchase and I will give you a promo code, as long as I have one available.

I will check them out. It usually indicates that a game does some really unholy hack to produce whatever sound it produces. Still, worth trying to fix.

  16. @GarageResearch - Bug Report

Thought I should let you know that there appears to be a bug in the ColEm emulation that is highlighted in the bears stage when playing Carnival. When there are two or three bears it is possible in ColEm v4+ to keep firing away from the bears and still score hits (50 points) each time. Each time the fire button is pressed the previous bullet disappears, 50 points are gained, and a new bullet is fired. This can be seen in the video here (uses ColEm 4.0 for Windows) : http://atariage.com/forums/topic/287329-colecovision-hsc-season-12-round-2-carnival/?p=4202086

Could you please attach a .STA file saved at the stage (and the number of bears) when this issue occurs? This will help me recreate it here and debug.

  17.

ColEm 4.0 is the one I use (Windows PC version, by the way). I forget the name of the old one I used so many years ago, but too many games would never start/work on the older ones (Canival, Smurf Rescue, etc.). Others have been listed as unsafe by my antiviru software (BlueMSX, for instance), so ColEm is what I always use because so many games work on it and I've never had issues with it. The homebrew games that require the Super Game Module sadly do not work on ColEm, however.

SGM games work on ColEm. Enable "Hardware | Super Game Module" option.

  18.

Well some of digress's games have F18A enhanced modes but not sure of exactly which F18A features are used. I believe Tank Mission may be the game that utilises the F18A the most on the CV to date.

The first three games in Opcode's Color Line games display using the enhanced color palette of the F18A if present.

Well, I cannot promise the complete TMS9900 emulation, but can try adding the palette and a few more things. Will see.

  19. I was just wondering if you have any plans to add F18A support to ColEm?

Can't say until I see the documentation on this thing, and some software that is specific to it. So far, it looks like an FPGA-based TMS9918 emulator that outputs VGA signal. In that case though, there would be nothing to emulate: ColEm already "outputs" "VGA signal", in a way. :)

  20. Hello, All!
