Why did you change your original quoted answer? In any event, if you have it powered on or not, stay away from the anode wire going into the tube.
I think that Osgeld was going for a laugh - I chuckled at any rate. He's a jokester at times. Full of info at other times.
Thank you for a detailed walkthrough - I myself have an Commodore 1804 and am wondering about the inevitable same thing. We're all getting older and so are our machines. The good news is that we're getting sillier. At least I hope that's good news....

What game do elves play? Basements and Birds?
Cloaks & Oaks? Spears & Ears? Baubles & Bows? I have a million of 'em...all equally horrible.

@Flashjazzcat - It's going to be a monumental achievement, whenever you complete it. I'll make sure that I have 128k at that point. It's frustrating that the stinkin' C64 had GEOS - that was a contentious point amongst my C64 friends in junior high...30 years ago.
What I did back then was what I could, I found an 80-column display program and typed it in and saved it to my 1050. I also wrote my own art program and had hi-res (192x320) with multi-colors - that was through the RF though. I created my own GUI at that time. Using a joystick as a mouse and using a missile graphic as an arrow pointer. I toyed around with moving windows and then my Father bought me an Amiga.
I'm really missing those old days though - life and computing shouldn't be that easy. We all need challenges.

Yes, just remove the capacitors. You need more signal strength through the those lines/traces. Don't replace anything....leave them open.

Just use UPS (or Ontrac for western American states) - this USPS rate-raping is getting ridiculous. I own a printing company and really can vouch for UPS & Ontrac - they're the best, with the best rates in my neighborhood. If I'm mailing/shipping something small (like a 1-2 lbs envelope, I might still use USPS....gonna have to check out those new rapes...errr rates.

Hi Kevin. Your joystick adapter looks like a great product, unfortunately (for sales) I went the whole ATARI route as a kid, and never owned a Texas Instruments computer. My childhood best friend did however, and I'll pass along the word to any TI peeps. My 2600 joysticks just plugged-and-played in my Atari800, and they never quit. I hear what you're saying. It's always good to see ventures/options like yours. Like you, I'm a new member to the boards, but have been lurking for years. Good luck with everything.

I agree with The_Doctor & Nezgar - it sounds/seems like it's an NTCS/Pal incompatibility.
You're narrowing down the problem when you said: "ANOTHER UPDATE: This only happens on my PAL 800XL, not on my 130XE. So it's specific to one of my machines. How could the system appear ok in BASIC but not under the menu?"
You're getting some timing (NTSC/PAL) timing/conflict issues... -
I'm sure that flashjazzcat will eventually weigh in, his work seems like it's the most developed/advanced. I've read his stuff and seen all of his youtube videos. I'm not going to bug a genius. It's just amazing that we're still pushing the limits of this 8-bit machine from the 70's & 80's.

Kremlin. 73 colors.
WOW! That really converts well... the colors are vibrant and the image still holds up sharply. I'm impressed. Well done.

Is this where this thread actually ended? Seems a bit anticlimactic. This work by Mr Reeves needs to continue with interest (IMO)...not by him if he's done with it; but there are many talented people here. I've been lurking for years...been looking at several GUI's in development for the ATARI 800. Most need 64K or 128K. I was hopeful for a GUI that could fit within the 10kROM & 48kRAM limits. I'm looking at several possibilities now, seems that a simple soldering of a wire and a cutting of a trace on the PCB will allow the use of previously unavailable cartridges. The future is indeed bright for the ATARI 800...40 years later.

I currenty done my mod on a Atari 800 and here is a picture how to to the mod only on solder side of the Atari 800 Main PCB

Thank you (and others) for your continued research! Especially tf_hh - this is an amazing discovery. Atari 800 owners must not be left behind - it was my first computer as a 10-year old kid. Now we can have access to so much more storage/accessibility options. This forum is a boon to an old kid.

That was an entertaining demo to watch. Janet looked great; like an 8-bit Susan Sarandon, which is even hooter, errrr hotter. She must've been a P/M graphic. Well done Philsan and team.

OK sounds fair then. Just sounded off when talking about selling copies of roms. I didn't gather it was chips from the post at all.
He literally gave everyone the PART NUMBERS and Descriptions of the physical parts in the 1st post.

Sounds like the guy doesn't want to support his project, and in this regard, I'll agree. Who needs more BASIC's?
To the original poster - forget this language variance, It's not worth the effort. PEACE.
