  1. Hehe. That would be a problem. I didn't think about the fact that you would have to re-load.

Here's a similar idea I had a while back: Using a 32k ROM image, make a sort of video game olympics. You play several hacked shorter versions of classic games as "events" and the scores are somehow combined to deterimine an overall winner. It would be similar to the Epyx games, but the events might be River Raid, Space Invaders, Berzerk, etc. Hopefully I can start working on the programming this summer.

  2. I think the best you could do on a cuttle cart is 15 2k games. You can't do 4k games because they would access the bankswitching memory area at some point and crash the Atari. And you'd only get 15 because there's no way I can think of to put two 2k games in each 4k slot.

  3. My ST has a special board with a 80286 chip installed so it can emulate a PC. The add on is called AT-SPEED. I've been able to boot a DOS 3.3 disk on it. Anyone know much about this? Is this a common modification?

Also, if I wanted to add a hard drive, what's the cheapest way?

  4. I just installed XP yesterday (upgrade from 2000) and I'm pretty happy with it. I had a few problems with drivers and stuff at first but got them sorted out pretty quickly.

Z26 and PCAEWin run fine on my Celeron 500 in XP without changing any windows settings. I've always had a problem with Z26 running slow, but I found that if I set the speed to 120 it runs at exactly game speed.

You can run Pitfall and use the countdown clock and a clock to check the speed of the emulator.

  5. I went out and bought SSX Tricky today after renting it.

    Rented a couple more games:

Simpsons Road Rage is worth renting if you're a Simpsons fan, but I don't think it's worth buying. The voices are great and it's really fun to play, but the graphics are average and there's no depth. Plus it's a bit buggy.

And Wave Race was just too hard for me. The physics and graphics are amazing, but I just don't have the patience to master the delicate control. Reviewers seem to love it, but most of them were experts at Wave Race on the N64.

  6. You need a quality shielded RCA cable. I just tried mine with a very high quality line level audio cable and it worked fine. Maybe try one of their RCA cables designed for video (I'm not sure if their audio cables are shielded well enough.)

  7. I finally played Super Monkey Ball with some friends and it's a ton of fun as a party game. It's just not as good as a one-player game.

I rented SSX Tricky (snowboarding) and it's really fun. Tons of tricks and hidden stuff. Even with only 3 courses unlocked so far we played for hours.

  8. I tried Cart Commander, and I think it's a great program, but without the ability to add custom fields I can't really use it. Some consoles I collect for use different rarity systems, some include gameplay ratings, I like to know how many overlays I have for a game (not just yes or no), etc.

It's pretty easy to keep track of games in an Excel table, so I've just been doing that for now.

  9. Sometimes I feel bad that I have so many games I haven't played. But now that I've done the math, I feel better. I was thinking I could have my friend over and just spend some time playing every game I have, but even if we only played each one for 1 minute it would take over 4 hours! Maybe I'll just play a different one every day for 9 months.

I wish I played more Fantastic Voyage. It looks pretty fun.

  10. I got one for Christmas and it's totally awesome! Post 1985, I'm Nintendo all the way.

I've got Pikmin, Super Monkey Ball, and XG3 Extreme G Racing. XG3 is totally amazing. My friend and I played it for hours today. And we just started Pikmin today and it blew us away. It looks SO good, and it's up to par with the bizarre fun of the previous Nintendo games. Monkey Ball is a lot of fun, but not quite as good as the other two. However, all the reviews say the multiplayer party games are what it's all about, and I've only played one-player mode so far.

SSBM is next on my list.

  11. You got me curious. I read over a tech document on the O2, and it's hard to say. The O2 has some advantages over the Atari such as built-in text and four sprites that are a lot easier to handle, plus it's got a little more memory. But it looks like it would be difficult to do any sort of scrolling at all on the O2, and it doesn't have as many colors.

I think some cool stuff could be done with the Odyssey, but I'm not sure if the graphics would ever be as good as later Atari games. Although it has more advanced graphic support, I'm not sure that it has the flexibility for the tricks that allowed later Atari games to have such impressive graphics. I bet a pretty good text game could be written for it since it has text support and a keyboard.

Graphics aside, almost all of the O2 games I've played suck. The gameplay is terrible.
