What's with the excitement for Analogue to repeat the mistakes of Sega? The Sega CD and 32x being expansions made it the laughing stock of the video game world. No console since has repeated that mistake for good reason. Personally a lot of the appeal of an FPGA Genesis, 32x, and Sega CD is not ever having to deal with those expansions again. My current Genesis is a mess. Sega Genesis 1, Sega CD 2, Sega 32X, video cable, headphone audio cable, 32X crossover cable, 3 wall wart ac adapters, model 1 extender, mounting bracket,, and just to add to the spectacle a set cartridge clips. The poor thing looks like a crash victim in the ER.

I really doubt it. The problem with handheld clones is sourcing the displays. They would need a stellar but cheap off the shelf solution. If something like that existed the mod market wouldn't be built on the backs of Gameboy advance and DS Lite screens. Cellphone screens are prohibitively expensive. Designing a screen and tooling up for a factory run would require a crazy amount of interest. Playing handheld games on a big screen seems like a pretty small market. Look at the failure of the poor Playstation TV. The Gamecube Gameboy Player and Snes Gameboy are cool but I'm not sure how much of a success they were. They offered neat ways to grow the handheld market but didn't seem to gain much ground as a replacement for it.

If you're interested in trying out the 240p test suite there is a Snes version that should work on the jailbreak firmware of the Super NT.
-
It's weird looking at the console sitting within eyesight, gathering dust, and knowing it's going for that much money. I'll get back to it after my Snes high wears off. I bonded with that console. It sat in my lap for 2 hours while I caressed it with q-tips soaked in alcohol. The glue used to assemble the box melted in shipment and made itself at home on the nice black surface.

What are you all playing on your MiST?
-
Xbox will play sega cd games through software emulation. Either off the harddrive or actual discs if I recall correctly. Pretty much every console can be software emulated but the whole point of fpga is to emulate on a hardware level. Snes emulation is at a "good enough" level but here we all are. Heck, people like Byuu argue that Higan is better than Super NT or at the very least the same quality level yet look how much we all like the Super NT. Never going to happen. The masses have spoken and they want cheap lcds. It doesn't matter if one format is superior or not. Cheapness will always win. Lcd vs plasma, vhs vs beta max, etc. Heck the premium tv market is smaller than ever.

Relatively cheap. The market even 10-15 years ago was very different. Especially for the few who made trips to Japan and used brokers to find items. Games that went for $10 back then are going for hundreds now. You have to understand that these collectors didn't just buy up their collection back then and hoarded it all this time. People who kept their passion going through the years have witnessed the market slowly going to heck. Especially the last few years as new ways of playing are introduced. It's completely changed collecting and a lot of people resent it. CRT televisions and old systems were treated as junk and it was the days you could find entire collections while dumpster diving. Ordering gaming items international was very strange back then and the used market was wide open. Many Japanese live fairly spartan so the used stores were unbelievably stocked with mint condition stuff. Neogeo has pretty much always been a rich person market. Bargain basement compared to what people are paying now but getitng the arcade experience at home has always been very specialized and elitist. Some scary people love the Neogeo.
-
It depends on the subreddit. Some communities have been largely isolated. You hang around like minded individuals long enough and you all start feeding off each other's anger. So when they see someone come in with new ideas they circle the wagon to protect their passion. Neogeo and Tg16 seem to be the worst offenders. Plus all the renewed interest has made their hobby expensive. It went from a basement dweller hobby into the boutique feel of the Nt Mini. Change is scary and humans tend to fear and hate it. All the rich people are ruining their hobby is basically the vibe I get. It's a shame. The good news is that mentality is becoming the minority. People want to experience those games for the first time. I'm all for introducing new ways to do it. So much would be lost if not for the efforts of people like Kevtris. So many new players are getting to enjoy the games we grew up playing. It's surreal

I guess I kind of get it. Game collecting has gone from a dorky hobby into something driven by people who think of it as an investment to eventually cash in. It's really expensive now and like anything the people who were there when it wasn't cool dislike the new comers. Its just human nature I guess. I personally largely ignored the Turbografx growing up. I didn't know anyone who could afford it and it was rarely talked about in the magazines I grew up reading. I was a huge anime fan but my interests went to the PC after the Nes era. I've never even seen a Turbografx at a yard sale and I did it hardcore for years before collecting exploded. I hope this new age of fpga gaming brings it the attention it deserves and makes it far more approachable. It's a really fascinating console

Played the first level 3 times as I kept forgetting to pay attention to the audio. I'm using headphones at a pretty unhealthy volume and I'm not noticing anything odd. Sd2Snes and the USA rom 4.0 firmware.

Retro RGB Roundup replacement
Shadowgate replied to konradklaus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I was also late to the game with him. I was looking for a good source of retro hardware news and now that I found one he quits the game. Is there anything close to what he was doing? Video or text. Some resource that talks about new products, preorders, and other things of that nature. -
The world is a big place. There will always be profiteers. I wouldn't let them sour you to the point where you're wondering the motivations of excited fans. Just think of the resellers as doing their part in hyping a product.
-
Wow! You have a very low opinion of people. I think you're getting a bit lost in assumptions. The prices on Japanese games is cheaper vs the American ones on every console and its always been that way. All those precious rpgs we all spend hundreds on are in the 500 yen bargain bin in most cases. Not every collector treats their collection like an investment. I'd say that is a very small minority from my experience. Personally I'm just glad all these games that were released in a time that video games were treated as childrens toys are getting the attention they deserve. Edit: Speaking of demanding fans. Can anyone link me to where the TurboGrafx community soured Kevtris on the console? I know I'm opening an old wound but I would like to see what actually happened. All I know is that something happened at some point where TurboGrafx purists attacked him.
-
The white knights are just as bad as the demanding fans. Are the people who don't want to spend money on real carts somehow the enemy? Looking out for the eBay sellers? A few rude people are annoying but I am glad to see people are so excited for these features. All these fans you despise are the reason products like the Super NT has a market. I hope people keep asking for chipset support.
-
I keep seeing information like this. That's why I'm wondering if the SD2Snes has peaked. It's been about 9 months since the last SD2Snes firmware update and the only things currently being worked on according to the status page is cheat support. Cheat support has been in development since 2015. Additional chipsets are apparently not even going to be worked on for another 2 updates. It must be bringing in money so I wonder what the deal is. With the SNES more popular than ever I hope this is the case. I'm happy with the device but it would be nice to know if it's been taken as far as it can go chipset wise. Amazing how far we have come in retro gaming.
-
Anyone have thoughts on the Sd2snes ever getting more support for the various expansion chips? All the status page says is its planned to attempt but I've seen a lot of speculation that some of them are not possible on the existing hardware. It's an expensive device selling a lot of units so I'm surprised it's not getting more active support. My hope is that the super nt eventually fills the gap but I wonder if we will eventually see a new version the Sd2snes with updated hardware.

The people on the fence about scan lines make sure you try them for yourselves at the proper scaling. Also do not watch videos and look at screenshots to form your opinion. They look awful in video and that's the primary reason the lets play crowd avoids them in videos. Try the following settings on the Super NT. These are from another poster. Resolution: 1080p60 Width: 1600 Height: 1200 Hyrbrid and normal scan lines look pretty good at this resolution. Use the 240p test suite to dial in the vertical position. I also really like the following 720p settings. It makes the image a bit softer on my tv but it's quite nice. 768 48 720 38 Hybrid scanlines at 200.

Interesting... I wonder if it's really connected. It's all just so strange. All the hype of the Super NT is making people want the NT Mini so there must be a good reason it's not there for sale to take advantage of this. The darn thing is going for over $1000 on eBay. All the packaging and such is designed around including the 8bitDo controller so I guess it makes a sort of sense. I guess there is just more profit to be made selling cheaper hardware to more people. I wonder if they will be moving away from the Boutique feel.
-
Has there been any official news or word about the NT Mini being sold again? I keep seeing small talk about some lawsuit against 8BitDo for their controllers but I can't find much info just googling. Is this the popular theory about why the NT Mini isn't currently being sold? The bundled controllers lawsuit?
-
Not a dumb question. People like scan lines because it recreates the look of crt televisions. These old consoles are designed around crt televisions and their limitations and you are not meant to be playing them on crystal clear modern displays. Scan lines create a unique look and the art was designed with them in mind. People like to recreate this look for that authentic feel or simply because that's how they remember the game. There are various schools of thought but a popular opinion is that you should only be playing these games on crt displays. Scan lines provide a middle ground to people with modern displays. Try it some time. Dial in the scan lines and crop a bit of the image like a crt would. You'll be experiencing the game exactly how the developers intended. If it's better or worse is a personal opinion. You may notice pixel art start to make more sense when scan lines are added. Things come into focus. The art was designed knowing scan lines would be there so it doesn't always look right without them.
-
Do you prefer the look of scanlines in 1080p vs 720p? When I use scanlines on 1080p they never seem to look right and the text gets lines through it. When I use the scanlines on 720 it looks more natural with the scanlines not going through text when using hybrid scanlines. I might just need to mess with it more
-
This one you already have on any console that can run roms. The 240p test suite. It's the gold standard.
-
- 720p 60hz - zero delay mode - interpolation left on - 8:7. I was using 4:3 for a 16:9 screen but I think I prefer 8:7. I'll dial it in when not feeling lazy. - Hybrid scanlines with gamma boost with the default 120 thickness. The 1080p settings from the my life in gaming video look good as well.Based on their 20L5 PVM Width: 1365 Horizontal Position: 38 Height: 1149 Vertical Position: 42 I couldn't get scan lines looking right in 1080p no matter what I did and the scan lines made text look like crap. On 720p they look just right and the text comes through perfectly clear.
-
Should I stick to 720p if using scan lines? I can't seem to get them looking right in 1080p. I'm starting to like the hybrid scan lines but they just look odd no matter what I try in 1080p

Hah! I just received a text and an email saying my Super NT has been shipped. Mine was delivered yesterday but still nice they got the notifications out finally. Edit: Dang, a lot of you sure got hit hard on shipping. I paid $22.64 and it only had to travel a few hundred miles to me. I wonder how they are calculating it to get rates like that.
