  1. The question is why DAC if you own original hardware?

You assume all original hardware has quality outputs or everyone owns a CRT with component inputs or a PVM,  they don't.

As an example, Original Genesis consoles have terrible composite out and while you can get RGB out of them even that isn't perfect without some mods, same with SNES.

The DAC will guarantee quality Composite, S-Video, Component and RGB across all cores it supports.  Some legacy hardware still doesn't have component/RGB mods available.

I have read some opinions that the MiSTer setup sounds more like a Genesis than the Mega Sg, but have there been any comparisons posted?

The LPF is more accurate on the MiSTer, but it lacks ladder effect.

I've got to ask again, how come now that there's a dedicated thread for MiSTer we do not see the participation of those so into "Analouge is evil, MiSTer for president" camp?

Because this thread is for those that actually want to talk about MiSTer instead of crapping on other alternatives.  I personally enjoy both my Analogue products and MiSTer setup.

  4. Congrats on successfully shipping this project.   While I had my concerns and freely spoke about them, never once did I want to see this project fail, so I'm happy to see this product finally reaching people's homes. Looking forward to see what this product will offer down the road.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong with my screen size settings on my Super NT? I save them but they disappear upon powering the system down.

I was just reading a comment on YouTube from someone wishing the Super NT would save some sort of setting after watching a video about the most recent jailbreak update. Was confused then, but think I understand now. Does it not really retain this stuff when powered down? What exactly am I saving when I select to save?

I think it might be a bug.  I've been holding off new firmware for a future fix.

I was already thinking it sounded a lot like the RetroN5 and a the "Duo" and "Dual" NES+SNES clones from the likes of RetroBit, Hyperkin, etc. IIRC, RetroN5 is named such because it has five different cart slots. I know: it looks hideous. Still, think about a system like PolyMega but with 8 bundled adapter modules and actually delivering on the promise of FPGA. It would sell like hotcakes! If anyone could do that concept right, it's Analogue.

Heck, they could do the whole "install your games to the system" thing too where you don't need the cart module once installed, which would be a legitimate way to incorporate jailbreak-like functionality. I can see a core store and an eShop actually being successful on such a device.

I don't think there are enough potential customers with actual game cards outside of Japan to make it feasible to sell a modern system for those, and they can't really bank on the jailbreak. It kinda needs to be part of an ensemble system, IMO.

Same for Neo Geo, really, unless they partner with SNK on this Neo Geo 2 and Neo Geo 3 thing and reissue classic titles alongside new/enhanced titles... and an eShop.

Well, they can advertise it'll work with flash carts.

How about Analogue 8, as a double meaning...8 systems, which are also 8-bit systems? ;)

    1. NES/Famicom

    2. Game Boy / Game Boy Color

    3. Neo•Geo Pocket / Pocket Color

    4. Atari Lynx

    5. Sega SG-1000

    6. Sega Master System / Mark III

    7. Game Gear

    8. TurboGrafX-16 / PC Engine

    ..

    ..

    ..

And all on a portable system.

    My list

    1. NES
    2. Gameboy/Gameboy Color
    3. Atari 2600/7800
    4. Colecovision
    5. Master System
    6. SG-1000
    7. Fairchild Channel F
    8. INTV  (Technically 16-bit, but its really looked at more as a classic 8 bit system.)

As much as I'd love to see PCE/TG-16, I think they will save that for a standalone console.

Somehow, I would be surprised if that were the case. I would tend to expect a multi-system with older classic 8-bit cartridge ports: Atari 2600/7800, ColecoVision and Intellivision, at the very least. The FPGA cores for these already exist (and Kev hasn't released his Inty core on any Analogue product so far, if I'm not mistaken) and it shouldn't take a very long time to develop the console hardware around them.

However, the availability of controllers could be an issue. Could Analogue convince 8bitdo to create a custom DB9 joystick with a self-centering analog thumbstick and a 12-key keypad? That would fit the Intellivision and ColecoVision very well (2600 games that require a keypad like Star Raiders would also benefit) and even an Atari 5200 core would become possible, if only in jailbreak ROM-on-SD-card format. 8Bitdo already does controllers of all shapes and sizes, so one can dream, right?  :)

But I'm still clamoring for an FPGA GB/GBC/GBA console with a Super-NES controller port. That's what I really want to buy, personally.  ;)

EDIT: It just occurred to me that the Analogue 8 could also be a multi-home-computer system, with a USB port to plug in a keyboard, and built-in cores for the Vic-20, C64, ZX Spectrum, MSX, Coleco ADAM, Coco 2, TRS-80, TI-99/4A, you name it. But somehow, I can't picture that selling really well...

    1. Honestly, consoles with a ton of cart ports are ugly.  I think offering adapters for all those pre Famicom/NES cores Kevtris has makes the most sense.  It makes the console cheaper and they won't have as much limitations on how they can design it.

    2. If you want a GBA/GBC/GB console then get Woozle's Consolizer.

    3. Definitely not gonna be a a multi classic computer system.   The only classic PC core he almost has completed is a C64 (For his FPGA Chiptune player).

Wrt Analogue 8 my guess is it's finally an all-in-one 8bits (no NES maybe?) with an added Intellivision core to wow us all out (even if that is technically 16bits ... you know what I mean) ... so yeah likely an NtMini redux with some core removed and some added in the spirit of 8bits game nirvana.

Wrt Analogue Pocket if kevtris can pull out of his magic hat a handheld FPGA that can run on batteries while sipping power my jaw would drop to the floor, FPGAs are not exactly the most energy efficient ... time will tell, October is close and that's when normally they announce some marvel that would ship the next March/April.

It'll definitely probably based around NES with cart adapters for other systems.   If Analogue 8 is indeed a multi 8 bit system.

What was your setup? Did you use the serial IO or was USB enough? And is it using VGA or the HDMI out?

In any case this is a nice achievement, well done!

HDMI out into a Plasma Display with 28ms of lag and using a M30 2.4Ghz controller via USB.

    Me very confused.

The oddball refresh rate is due to how the original console was wired wrt clock sources, Kevtris is replicating that, if you want exactly 50Hz to use the DAC to go to OSSC to go to HDMI, you already have it in the actual MegaSg/SuperNt HDMI, unless you really really like OSSC scanlines or such but that defeats the purpose.

It seems we want all eight combinations:

HDMI at 50, 60 and the original 50ish and 60ish (last 2 just in case your HDMI set might support them)

DAC at original 50ish, 60ish and then perfect 50 and 60 (last 2 so you could say you could do:

HDMI -> DAC -> OSSC|XRGBMini|RetroTink2x -> HDMI for whatever reason you may want to do it)

Maybe kevtris will enable all of them just so he can sleep at night.

Original timings without that framebuffer would be ideal.   And you can just have some kind of count down in case your display can't handle the original timings and it'll revert back to a safe mode.  Don't see why they wouldn't add them if its now possible.  This would be amazing and speedrunner friendly.

Assuming the DAC allows for 32x comparability (a big if) I’d hope for the reverse option of perfect 50hz or 60hz through the DAC.

PAL MD’s have such an off spec refresh (a switch modded NTSC console is actually closer to 50hz!) that I’ve never found a TV that doesn’t tear or frame skip though the OSSC.

Actually has it been confirmed that 50hz will be supported through the DAC at all?

The DAC has a switch for Pal and NTSC.

Since the DAC allows for the Super NT to run at the slightly lower than 60 fps that the original SNES runs at, I hope Kevtris puts an unsupported option in to have the HDMI output run at the same 59.53 FPS as the OG sNES.  Many HDTVs can handle the nonstandard SNES refresh rate.  I have an OSSC and my mid-range Samsung LCD TV can handle it.

Otherwise, I am going to chain my Super NT through the Analogue DAC and then thru my OSSC to my LCD HDTV.

OG SNES runs at 60.09.  Kevtris slows it down to a perfect 60hz for HDMI 1080p out.

The wait game starts for the JB fw with all the fixes.

It's interesting they had to enable DAC support on both, obviously the output is not HDMI spec anymore (can be just timing or a completely different beast) ....

the Cyclone 10 LP 006 is pretty inexpensive at about 10US$

    https://www.mouser.com/Intel/Semiconductors/Programmable-Logic-ICs/FPGA-Field-Programmable-Gate-Array/_/N-3oh9p?P=1y9hzufZ1yy6lwuZ1yxyvun

I wonder what the final cost of the DAC would be.

enlarged pic of the DAC proto here:

Kevtris said timings are identical to real hardware.

"Since no one asked, the timing coming out of the dac exactly matches the original system, down to the missing pixel on the snt every other frame"

I´m not expert but looking to the pcb I was expecting something simple, with less components. Even a cyclone 10 is there. Maybe is just for the test board...

Naaa, the Cyclone 10 carries the bitstream.  That PCB is basically the final hardware its just making sure the software is in a good state.

  17. This turned out to be one of the most interesting threads in AA for sure.  Also, can't believe someone would question Kevtris's skills considering his track record.  That is quite ridiculous.

Having said that, the game itself looks pretty decent, just too bad about the whole DRM issue, especially considering all the great homebrew releases without the need for DRM.

I personally feel DRM has no place in the retro homebrew community and just on principal couldn't support something like this.  I would purchase a non DRM rom release though.

From Polygon interview 10 months ago:

When asked what’s happened to this thing (DAC), Taber said, “It’s been done. It’s like 99.9 percent done and has been for like six months. We just didn’t have the time to focus on it. We had a small window of time to be able to focus on something else before we needed to get on Mega SG to be able to stick to our development schedule, and we even pushed the envelope a couple of weeks out and we just couldn’t spend another fucking day on it. We had to drop it. So it’s basically done, ready to be produced. We even have all the parts for it and everything, we just have to pull the trigger on it. So right when we get through these last little details with Mega SG, that’s the first thing on the list.

    https://www.polygon.com/2018/10/16/17979024/sega-genesis-mega-drive-mega-sg-release-date-analogue-super-nt

If he told the truth, native timings over HDMI are done. The only thing on the technical side that I imagine could delay the launch of DAC would be to make 32X compatible. But can only be a matter of again focus on it as he said.

What will come first? DAC or SG adapters?  😁

NT Mini Poor Man's Edition, or PCE/TG-16 FPGA.

  19. I'm going to assume that the hold up for the DAC was possibly Kevtris needing time to be able to output 240p and native timings via HDMI.  Before the DAC was announced he stated that offering original timings via HDMI out would be very difficult because of something to do with PLLs or something.

  20.   Yeah I was super critical of the MiSTer because for awhile there I felt they didn't take user experience seriously.  Preservation has always been touted as the goal for open source cores and MiSTer, but until recently it just didn't have a great user experience with its 2+ frames of lag and horrible HDMI scaler.

Well now that is changed, so I felt it was the right time to invest in a MiSTer for my own personal use.  I bitched enough to Rysha over the year about some changes/features I thought should be in the MiSTer, and whether I had any part or not of convincing people to add those things I'm just happy they have been implemented. MiSTer is turning into a really solid multi system FPGA system. Now we just need those direct to FPGA controller adapters to bypass USB polling for even lower lag.
