  1. It's possible your monitor is adjusting to it. The symptoms you will see if your monitor doesn't switch:

     

    * Full range on a limited range monitor - blacks and whites get crushed, since anything below 16 is clipped to black, and anything above 235 is clipped to white.

    * Limited range on a full range monitor - blacks (like the left/right bars) turn dark grey and the whole image seems to get slightly brighter and possibly washed out.

     

    Be sure to uncheck "dim screen while in menu", this will make it easier to see.

     

    If you have limited range on a limited range monitor, vs. full on a full, it won't look much different. There will be some fine brightness detail lost (most noticeable on gradients) but overall brightness and such should look the same, since the 0-255 range is being squashed down to 16-235. The super nt does this "squashing" conversion now, where before it just sent out full range RGB no matter what.

    Yes, my Plasma was on a Auto setting for RGB range, so it was adjusting correctly and why I wasn't seeing either crushed or washed out blacks. Thanks.

     

     

     

    BUG REPORT

     

    A youtube user told me Cho Aniki doesn't boot since firmware 4.1. I tested it in 4.3 and it really doesn't boot. (used SD2SNES). But if you do the controller soft reset, while in the black screen that shows when you try to boot the game, it restarts and boots properly. I played a couple minutes and it was fine. I tried the Reset button and it didn't work.

     

    So a short list:

     

    Monopoly is crashing on certain cards and chests

     

    Cho Aniki needs a controller reset.

     

    Fron Mission's text craps out randomly

     

    Flashback has a buzz sound in the inventory screen

     

     

    Did I miss something?

    Samurai Showdown still stops at the animated intro. I don't know if there was a firmware rev where this game ever fully booted. I should clarify that I'm using an SD2SNES. Its possible the actual cart might run.

    If your TV/monitor is set to full range you should see a huge difference if you toggle the "limited range" option on/off. The black borders will switch between black and grey and will only be black if you turn the "limited range" option off.

     

    If your TV/monitor is in limited range mode and the Super Nt is sending full range it's not that easy to see. You would need a dark image (night scene) or a test pattern to check the difference. So if you don't see a difference you may need the "limited range" option.

    So, I checked my Plasma RGB range settings and it was on Auto, so that is why it wasn't showing a difference. It was correcting for proper range.

     

    Now the question is, should I enable or disable limited range via Super NTs settings? What is the correct range to use?

     

    Since my Plasma's Auto feature is correctly outputting either range.

     

    Also, if I manually choose the RGB range via my Plasma I have 16 - 235 and Non Standard, which I assume is Full Range.

    You should always be using Full -> Full with SNES, as there is color information below 16 & above 235/240 being sent, and setting limited for both will blow out highlights and crush blacks. Detail will be lost. Limited should be used only for compatibility with screens that don't support full range RGB.

     

     

    The old gamma boost was necessary to compensate for the lopsided grayscale/gamma distribution/ramp. Now that it's (hopefully) fixed, touching gamma shouldn't be necessary when not using scanlines. I can't say for now what would be good/accurate with scanlines and at what depth.

    That is true, just with stock settings via 4.3 firmware the gamma seems to be correct. Where in previous firmwares leaving gamma boost off would make some scenes too dark to the point of missing shadow details.

    That's wrong. Activating the "limited range" option of the Super Nt should exactly avoid that problem. A working "limited range" implementation will compress the color range to 16-235 and it's hard to see a difference to full range / full range in most cases. Only mixing the settings is a problem and will result in the problems you mentioned.

    I switched back and forth and I'm not seeing a difference to be honest.


  5. Firmware 4.3 has been posted.

     

    Changes include:

     

    * Fixed Front Mission - Gun Hazard. This game did mid-frame HDMA enables and disables. Pocky and Rocky should be fixed too with this since it does that as well.

    * Fixed Ninja Warriors

    * Re-fixed the Mecarobot Golf fix, this should fix several random crashes.

    * Fixed Uniracers 2 player mode, where player 2 hovered above the track.

    * Partial fix on Front Mission - bottom of text box no longer moves, but the text sometimes does.

    * Added individual RGB gamma sliders.

    * Added "straight through" RGB when not using HQX scalers; this should fix the RGB issues people had. These are under the "scanlines" menu.

    * Linearized the brightness steps for the overall screen brightness (PPU reg 2100 bits 0-3).

    * Added limited RGB mode checkbox. This is under the "scalers" menu. Also now I am sending out "underscan" flags, and "IT content" flags which should force some monitors/TVs to disable overscan, and any filtering/processing (IT mode).

    * Super Powerpak fixed - check "use launch system timing" box under the hardware menu if you wish to use one.

  6. FWIW my LG plasma is also set to black level=low, and blacks are much deeper now with limited mode disabled on the Super NT. Everything looks more washed out with limited mode on.

     

    I see the SD card speed option has made it into the firmware. Wasnt that only in the JB firmware previously?

  7. I call fake on this one. I'm pretty familiar with analog fuzz and distortion, and the "composite" here just looks like extra heavy jpeg compression after a generic smudge up filter in photoshop. A huge tell tale is that the over-all colors and brightness match EXACTLY. Ain't nobody got time to calibrate the analog input that exactly with the digital one for a comparison shot like this (if it's even possible).

     

    Meh, looking some more, I guess I do see some comb filter artifacting around the copyright text, and some difference in the red saturation. Maybe it's legit after all, but taken with a camera off-screen that applied a lot of jpeg compression to it.

    Its a direct capture of composite, so no comb filter to clean the composite up. Thats why a comb filter is a must for composite signals.


  8. Lon Seidman did a pretty good review of the Super Gameboy on the Super Nt:

     

    Input lag added about 36ms over the base Super Nt (he got ~80ms of input lag with the Super Gameboy in the Super Nt, compared to 44ms of input lag for snes games on the Super Nt. Note that this measurement included his TV's input lag, which presumably makes up most of the 44ms).

    Yeesh, thats over two frames of additiona lag. I wonder why that happens. I mean even if you have a LCD/OLED with around 1 frame of lag as base that would mean at best 3 frames of total lag playing GB games. Does this happen on a regular Super Nintendo as well?

  9. I want to get a hold of the remaining SA1 and FX titles I don't have, but am holding out for an SD2SNES successor that will do it all. Maybe in another 5 years...

    I actually just bought the Japanese release of Kirby Super Deluxe for $9.50 off Ebay. As long as the games aren't text heavy like RPGs or Strategy games I recommend you save money and buy the Super Famicom carts.

  10. I remember seeing the CMVS and thinking it was beautiful and something I "needed" to own, but never got around to it. Got giddy like a school girl/boy when the Nt was announced. All this time has passed and now I have the Nt mini and the Super Nt.

    I still would like the Nt mini in a plastic shell and would gladly obtain one, especially now that we've heard news of the DAC. (I'm of the mind they've already got that cranking what with the surge in sales for the lower-priced Super Nt.)

    The aluminum shell is nice and all but since I've grown up with plastic consoles I would prefer that material, especially as it makes it cheaper initially.

    Pretty sure we'll get a Neo NT sometime down the road. I never owned a Neo-Geo before, but I'll definitely pick up an Analogue clone if the price is not too crazy.


  11. For me, the biggest real difference is the latency. Like.. yeah, it looks sharper, but I don't mind the horrible composite appearance just because that's what I grew up with. But composite into an HDTV often results in far more latency than a digital signal, it seems.

    Well, I don't have a problem with clean composite into a nice CRT, that can look acceptable with some consoles that have decent video encoders, but composite looks noticeably worse on HDTVs.

     

    Also, yeah latency can be an issue with your TV having to both convert the analog signal to digital while also having to upscale such a low res image.

    Definitely not close to fair but to the vast majority of average people that is how it would be.

     

    Back before the days of easily accessible information unless you had a vested interest in AV you probably wouldn't have known about the jumps to component and RGB. Even after our first component TV sometime in the 2000's, it still wasn't common knowledge which input was best until a lot of trial and error.

    100% why the comparison is still somewhat relevant. There are still plenty of people that are still hooking up their SNES straight to their HDTVs via composite.

  13. What beta. Did you just read me post that kevtris wants to do a beta, and are now just assuming there is some closed beta testing being done? Or did I miss something?

    I watched your live stream. Kevtris said he wants to do a beta to prevent a 4.1 from happening again.

    "I got a couple people lined up that will do some good hard testing for me so that it isn't rushed out."

    I was not. I would like to have a look at it to do comparisons using the 240p test suite against Higan and my various SNES consoles though. I would hate for the firmware to become 'official' and then I get a hold of it and find something was off spec.

  15. I just got third new Analogue NT Mini for warranty, why the hell they send me faulty shit, look dat shit!! I just cancel my Super NT orders, cause they sell people full of shit!

     

    I'm sorry, but at this point I blame user error. Your setup must be whack, because I doubt you could have that much bad luck. Three faulty Analogue NT Minis, I highly doubt that.

     

    I've questioned your motive since your original posts about hooking up your HDMI enabled console into a framemeister via composite. Your setup makes zero sense.

  16. People should also remember the NT mini had many more years of development and was essentially already finished. I would be interested in a fully complete 8 bit Sega FPGA clone. The SMS core for the NT mini was never completed, have this system fully duplicated would also allow for more ground work being laid in the genesis. SMS enjoyed reasonable success outside the Japan and the US. Architectually, it might make sense to do a TG-16/PC Engine clone as there are similarities between it and the NES/famciom. While this system wasn't much of a hit in the states it was a major success in Japan. This might also sell well if you keep the expansion port

    Good point, I think he said he basically finished the NES Core pre 2010.


  17. Lon.tv did a comparison to a typical consumer grade CRT in his nt mini review and the 5x looked pretty much identical. IIRC the CRT might have even cut off a bit more.

    I have two CRTs and when I plug my OG SNES in either of them there is less information cut off via overscan compared to Super NT with 5x vertical height turned on via my 1080p Plasma which is set to 0% overscan.

     

    I can try and post pics later on.


  18. Yeah the accuracy of that NES core is on point. Don't interpret this the wrong way, overall the total number of bugs we are seeing in the SNES core is small, but it feels like there are more than there was when the Mini was released. Also I have horrible memory.

     

     

     

    Are either of these necessary (5x or the new interpolation) when outputting 720p to a 4k display? My NT Mini is hooked up to my PVM, but I did briefly have it connected to my 4k vizio and from what I recall (again horrible memory disclaimer) I just had to set it to 720p, it filled up the whole screen nicely, and I didn't need to mess with anything else.

    I'm still rocking a 1080p Plasma, so I don't know. Even when I buy a 4K TV I still plan to run the Super NT in 1080p mode.
