  1. Been playing around on my 360 quite a bit lately and jumped into Titanfall for a quick game, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE THERE....... So just thought I would throw out an invite for the next few days to anyone interested that I will be in lobby around 8pm on 7/20/2020 through the 22nd trying to get a few matches of attrition. Hope to see a few folks there!!

  2. Why does this basically read like a Craigslist personal ad?

lol.... If I thought a cragslist ad would work I'd try it. I'm actually sort of starting over on my streetpass collection now. I previously had a 2ds that the screen broke on and had quite a few Mii on it. Being near 70 and since my job has me driving through lots of residential areas so much I was getting quite a few hits. But that was last year and now it seems that the use of the 3ds line of systems has dried up around here. I really enjoy my 3ds and it's a real shame more people aren't still playing it..... Darn smart phones and tablets!!

  3. I'm looking for some fellow 3ds owners to do some sort of meet up. I live in the Zanesville Ohio area which being right along Interstate 70 between Columbus and Wheeling Wv makes it fairly easy to find. I'm specifically looking to do a streetpass meet so I can unlock a few things and maybe do some buying and trading. If anyone's interested or knows of anything nearby leave a message. Thanks guys!

  4. the best system to develop for is the one you like

and it depends on what one means about develop, as there's probably a option to use basic on everything ever made, which will make a game, with some effort a fun game

then there's lower level languages like C or ASM for whatever cpu is being used + support for the custom chips and blah blah blah

its not really a question of easy (heck there's a gob of stuff for 68000's used in genesis and about a billion computers, but the SNES's 65816 was used in that and the Apple IIGS) but if you have not noticed, Nintendo systems tend to draw in a lot of "enthusiastic fans" so you tend so see more on those type of scenes

Thanks for the response. I was wondering about what sort of tools are available for the different platforms? A lot of the stuff used on older systems you would think would be hard to find or use now but since I haven't given it a really deep look yet I'm not sure. Saw a tool set from Microsoft called XNA for use with xbox 360 and tutorials for using it so thought about checking it out. What have you used if anything?

  5. I'm a big Sega fan and have seen recent games being developed for various Sega hardware. Of course while checking these out I've seen lots of things being made for the SNES and NES. Now is this because these systems are easiest to program for or wide availability of systems/emulators? The original xbox and the PS2 are popular for emulators and media centers but don't seem to attract much actual game development. Just thought I would ask those who actually do this stuff.

  6. WOW! Quite the response...... I realize that the game consoles are computer based but a computer is not always a pc or a game console. My primary irritation with more modern systems is the similarities to pc gaming. Updates to fix system errors, or updates for game issues, or my favorite..... hangs or crashes. So my criteria for a "Real" game system would most likely be... Turn on, game starts, play game, turn off (really turns off, doesn't go to sleep). Keep in mind that this is just my opinion and in no way demands that anyone else believe the same ;-)

  7. I was recently having a discussion with some friends and associates at work about game consoles. During the discussion the recent xbox one and PS4 were being put forth as the "best" game consoles but I threw in that neither was really a game console. I felt that pretty much every console since the original xbox has been a pc in disguise. I would have to say the GBA or N64. Anyone else like to throw in their opinion?

  8. Seeing just that still above makes me wonder if it would be possible for someone to hack a DIY setup to get what people want, the 3DS consolized, or at least let's be more accurate with hybridized. Using the Nintendo Switch as a model, what if it were possible to dock the 2/3DS and have (since we know with 2DS it internally casts one tall (wide) screen image) and then with the dock or wired (in the still there) have a controller attached. From that unit, another wire from the base, an HDMI wire like the Switch dock to the TV. The system will simultaneously display to BOTH sources so you don't have any loss of function for touch based options in games. No it would not be ideal for a touch only or centric game, but the majority of 3DS games are touch optional or minimal at best with standard controls anchored within.

The external video used by the Katsukity mod is based off USB and has some lag issues. It works just fine for capturing video for playback but requires a computer to display it and on anything approaching a twitch type game it can throw off move timing. RGB signals could probably converted directly to a RGB scart cable or maybe a VGA type connector but there would be no upscale. Some sort of line doubler to bring the resolution up to modern flat screen dimensions would be needed. Biggest problem with a dock style system would be the connector between the 3ds/2ds and dock. From what several modders have stated there really isn't a huge amount of room for add-ons in the case or on the board. That was the main reason I stated they would probably have to eliminate the portability to make it home console usable.

  9. I too have wondered about a DS family home console. Found the Katsukity 3ds video capture and a couple others doing the same thing but as was already stated it is not exactly what we're looking for. There is also and external controller mod,

, which allows a variety of controllers to be used with the system. I think someone would have to look at removing the portability of the system to really get somewhere. The display seems to be a parallel RGB setup and some sort of converter to a different standard would be needed. Perhaps an standalone board with video and audio in place of the screen assembly. External hookup for a controller and maybe a converter to translate the screen digitizer inputs to mouse movements or a touch pad. Obviously a custom enclosure would make it a cleaner looking setup.

  10. Obviously not a complete solution but it does offer a look at something that someone could mess with now if so desired. Not sure how the core in the analogue Nt or super nt is implemented but wonder if the FPGAGen could be ported to that and put on the DE-10? Anyone with a few extra dollars and some time on their hands wanna order one of these things and report back I'd love to hear all about it.

  11.

Yeah, we're thinking alike! I wouldn't care if it didn't have a SMS cart slot or support the 32X. I think we're already reaching a bit, but a built in CD drive would be the bees knees. I'd think that would be easier than getting it to run BIN/CUE off of the SD. But now we're easily back in the $400 league.

Well it appears that at least to a certain extent your dreams have come true...... A FPGA based Genesis is already out there,

. It uses a DE-10 Nano kit FPGA. Downloads of a Genesis core can be found in the video description along with some basic directions. Haven't gone much further checking it out than that. Check it out and see what you think. Maybe someone can ask Kevtris what he thinks and any input he might have such as controllers and fine tuning.

  12.

lol, that thing was an off the shelf $20 USB dvd drive stuffed with a Raspberry Pi and marked up an additional $100.

PCs have taken care of CD based system emulation for years now. You can put together a much nicer setup on your own than any overpriced crowd funded nonsense project will offer. There's tons of emulation front ends to choose from, go nuts.

True. But while you, me and the great majority of people on this forum could throw a Orange Pi and disc system together for gaming, a consumer friendly option would probably go over pretty well. There's a business opportunity staring you right in the face :-)

  13.

An original XBOX is not a bad compromise at all if you are OK with emulation. It does all three very well and it will even read original Sega CD discs if you absolutely want to use the original media.

Unfortunately Kevtris has already stated in recent interviews that Sega CD or 32X clones are not likely to happen. So while it's interesting to wonder, I wouldn't go reaching too far.

You can't just have a CD drive included and expect the CD titles to work. There is extra hardware in the Sega CD, such as an added 68000, more memory and extra video and sound hardware. All that needs to be replicated if a hardware clone was to exist, and that's easier said than done.

Of course, a software emulation box with a disc drive is an option, but a modded original XBOX already does that.

Yeah the disc drive emulation box seems to be taken care of by the Seedi multi Console system (assuming it gets made). My idea for a all in one is stated above and I think it would probably look similar to a Sega Saturn. Cartridge slot located to the rear and disc drive in front on top. Someone could then make whole compilation (legal licensed versions) of original genesis games played off discs. I really wish someone would do a system like this..... P.S. Really doesn't need to be FPGA. Plenty of decent hardware clones that could be adapted to such a system.

  14.

I'd rather be able to use a new disc drive than keep relying on my Sega CD from 1994, especially with a brand new FPGA Genesis. On the Nomad, I would be content to sit and wait for McWill to come out with a new screen for it. His Game Gear and Lynx screens are sights to behold.

Actually I didn't mean the original Sega Cd... generic usb /custom add-on drive, whichever. The actual hardware to play the Sega CD media would be on the same board as the rest of the system, just not active without the drive available. USB would simply be the bus it would run on. I've witnessed the magnificence McWill's work but it still relies on 30 year old electronics that are rare and going up in price, not even counting the cost for McWills work. I would be willing to "suffer" through with a system based on the Genesis clone sold through Gamerz Tek. Their compatibility, a decent screen and control layout would tick most of my boxes. Figure a $70-120 range for pricing and I'd be in like Donkey Kong!

  15. Last time I looked around at soft mods for the ps2 it seemed to me that the original optical was still needed. I took a look at some tutorials on newest methods so I may take a wack at it soon. I just so happened to find an original hard drive, network adapter local so I can try my hand at it. Need a nice big 2 tb drive for all my games.

  16. I can't speak for the portable aspect, but a modded Xbox 1 (and others) of course can play all Genny, 32x, and Sega CD games via emulation.. but that's emulation. Still though, I find it perfectly playable when it comes to Genesis/Megadrive titles, and it's what I use for Sega CD & 32x since I don't have the units.

Else getting a regular Genesis and an Everdrive would of course give you the entire Genesis library as well as SMS games available off the bat. Everdrive also supports 32x if you have the hardware.

Else there's also the Fei Hao Clone which supports all carts and the Everdrive, except for virtual racing and 32x which don't work.

I too am using emulation for the moment to play my non existent Sega 32x and CD but on the much easier to soft mod Wii. I also have an X7 Everdrive on order for my future system. Seriously eyeballing one of those big multicarts for my NES.

  17. I'd love for a hypothetical Mega NT to allow you to connect any kind of external optical drive through USB to play Sega CD games, so you don't actually need a Sega CD. Or just run Sega CD games off the SD.

This is sorta down the path I was thinking about. One slot for the Genesis/Mega/32x cartridges and either a built in CD drive or USB drive for the CD. On a different subject, if a portable (Nomad) system were done I think a Game Gear adapter would be nice (aka PowerBase for the Genesis). If you're gonna dream, dream big!

  18. Didn't see a posting area in modern or classic gaming so decided here would work. I have a few PS2 consoles sitting around with bad optical drives and started poking around on the net for a emulated optical drive replacement that uses sd cards or usb drives. Found PS3 and original Playstation drives but so far nothing with the PS2. Anyone else see or hear anything on this front? Also if this is in the wrong area please point me in the right direction...... Thanks

  19. Thanks for replying. I realize the system isn't hugely expensive but a well made clone would be nice (doesn't have to be fpga) to see considering how old the original systems are now. My previous post was a little confusing. I really meant a home console with all in one Genesis functionality and then a seperate Nomad-like portable system with base Genesis support. I've seen Hyperkins SupaBoy S Portable so a Genesis version wouldn't be a real stretch to imagine. I remember my Nomads screen was okay back then but by todays standards it would be pretty poor looking. It also ate batteries like crazy. So, better screen, built in rechargable battery, and full compatibility with original Genesis games for the portable; and a all in one Genesis/32x/CD console for the home. It's really a wishlist that I've had from when I still owned the originals. Anyone whose had a Model 1, 32x and CD all set up and taking over an entire room could surely sympathize.
