  1. In hi-res mode, the overlay will take on the luminosity of the hi-res pixels underneath it. So, a single color-clock pixel overlayed on two half color-clock pixels of different luminosities will appear as two half color-clock pixels of different luminosities with the color value of the overlay. The result can be very effective, especially when the hi-res luminosities have sharply contrasting values (ie: black & white). Image Example: Image Example Zoomed: You can see that the overlay is hard to detect in the region where it lies over the black background. This is because the overlay color is displayed here at it's lowest luminosity, which causes it to blend in the with the black background surrounding it. Therefore it appears as if your overlay has half color-clock resolution.
  2. That was really cool, man...
  3. No need to, you can load it directly. Atari810 (which is the program I use) doesn't seem to like XEX files. I need them in ATR format. Tempest It's a fairly trivial thing to put a binary on an ATR. There are several Windows based apps out there. There are a couple of DOS based ones that do fine also.
  4. Thanks! Jumpman Junior was one of my top 5 favorites way back. Really cool to see this.
  5. Same thing happened with Xenophobe except that the 7800 was missing some of the touches (ie. scrolling as you went from screen to screen) Maybe due to the differences in implementing scrolling. Isn't scrolling more difficult on the 7800? I still haven't played the 8-bit version of this yet. I've heard a lot of good things about it. I guess I've hesitated buying the cart, mainly because Xeno isn't one of my favorite games. It definitely has more personality in the arcade version.
  6. It's complete. In defense of the 8-bit version as well, they pulled of something pretty awesome for a graphics chip from 1981! I was blown away by it and Xenophobe when they were found and subsequently shared. Hmmm... actually, I'm a little surprised it's complete. The same software house (Sculptured) did both versions yet there are quite a few differences. A lot of the pluses on the 7800 side could have easily been in the 8-bit version. But, yea, 8-bit version is great, 7800 version is greater. Maybe Ikari Warriors, Ninja Golf, and California Games will turn up some day for the 8-bit as well...
  7. Unlike Ballblazer, Commando uses both the POKEY and the TIA, making it the only game to do so. The music is done by POKEY while the sound effects are done by TIA. Six channels in all. I had the opposite reaction when I played 8-bit Commando (which I think is quite good) ... that the music was actually worse. Compared to the 8-bit version, the music and graphics on the 7800 version win hands down. I give sound effects a tie. Music definitely sounds better on the 7800. It follows the actual tune more closely. The 8-bit version plays different bass notes, which causes some of the chords which are minor in the original to be major. This changes the character of the tune itself. It makes the tune sound "happy". Is war supposed to be happy? Well, I guess it can be in an arcade game. Never the less, I definitely prefer the original version of the tune for setting the mood. I'd love to see someone hack in the correct music in the 8-bit version. The 8-bit version has better gun shot sounds, but the bombs sounds are totally wimpy. It sounds like they are using the same sound for the bombs as the enemy gunshot sound in the 8-bit version. The bomb sounds are nice and full sounding in the 7800 version. So, a tie here. I won't even go to deep into the graphics, as the 7800 version has no trouble winning there. But, I love the beautiful hi-res, colorful score-panel the 7800 uses. In defense of the 8-bit version, it's a proto. Although, I forget how complete it's supposed to be. Either way, 7800 version of Commando is awesome in every respect. I don't think the NES version even compares to it. Highlight of the system in my opinion. btw: is there a 7800 emulator that can display the title screen without all the crap at the bottom?
  8. I just went out to my mailbox and downloaded the Analog Magazine collection at ALL bits per second. Thanks for seeding ThumpNugget! Another great collection, another satisfied customer. May the force be with you.
  9. 1. Burnout has an option for speed of the cups: 1,5,10 or 20. The speed is the same for all four options so there is something wrong. 2. Monster does give error messages but I don't know them off the top of my head. 3. The loader program doesn't work with tokenized programs either. I tried it. I see. Well, I didn't run them for long enough see the problems you are speaking of (burnout, monster). I thought you were saying they didn't run at all. As far as the loader program, I tried tokenized files before I posted the first message also. I said "additionally" the files should be tokenized. The program gives the "RUN" command which implies the need for tokenized files. The reason it won't load tokenized files is because it's tacking on extra space characters to the filename, before the extension. Woops! I missed that. I'm not even sure the purpose of this program is in relation to the Monster program. It's not like it saves your stats to disk. Well I guess I'll just leave it as is. Now I just need to figure out the other three. The one that is really stumping me is the Player-Missile design program. I went through the listing half a dozen times. If there was a error in the original printing of it in Creative Computing, you'ld figure they would have printed a follow-up in a later issue. I checked a couple of issues later and there was nothing. Thanks for the help, Mr. Fish. Allan I went through the PM program a little bit. The first error is an out of screen boundary error. The variable "Y" has value 24 at the line of the error, which which is out of the boundary of a graphics 0 screen. It gets its value from a subroutine for/next loop. Unfortunately, the author doesn't consider (or understand) that the exit condition for the loop is 24, not 23. This program logic is in the original text. That's only the first problem, there are more. I'm not sure why they would publish this, or not correct it later either. But, there it is.
  10. I agree... I think they did a very decent job on Desert Falcon's sound.

  12. "Burnout" and "monster" seem to work fine. The PM program has some problems... looks like in the original code. Also, the loader program has problems. Additionally, the loader program needs to have "tokenized" files for loading, not "atascii" files like what's on the disks. If there is a loader program on the other disks that you've typed in, you can just use it in place of the buggy one, as it's just a generic BASIC program loader.
  13. They look so sad! It might be interesting to see how the angry eyebrows look. Alright, now they're pissed. All they need is a butcher's knife and a hockey mask...
  14. They look so sad! It might be interesting to see how the angry eyebrows look. Maybe they're just tired of all the eye-pixeling that's being done to them. How about "Groucho Marx" eyebrows instead...
  15. I'm voting for "5200" ghosts. But, since everyone else is making additional suggestions... Here's my entry for the contest:
  16. PDF Manual with bookmarks removed with help from admin...
  17. Hm, interesting, did you use Acrobat Professional or something like that? BTW, whom did you ask for mirroring ? Hm, as expected no reaction ... To say it very plain - it is a question of manners. Some people have, some don't have ... I would expect to get contacted before mixing up a living project I am working on, which took a lot of efforts and especially in programming aspects a lot of brainworks. I have a very little part in SpartaDOS X 4.42, but I am definitely disappointed by people who do not show a minimum of respect, like e.g. "Mr Fish" or "dwhyte". This is my personal remark and may or may not apply to all involved in SDX. My apologies for any disrespect taken from my post of the bookmarked SpartaDOS X manual. I certainly intended no disrespect towards anyone. Quite the contrary, I hold in high regard anyone who makes a significant contribution to the Atari 8-bit community. My interest in bookmarking the manual was for my own ease of use, and I was attempting to make that convenience available to the rest of the community. I respect your concerns Goodbyte, and I agree with what's been said regarding distribution. In my defense, I didn't see your original post (concerning mirroring) until just now, otherwise I would have responded to it. I was also up very late when I did the bookmarking, and posting it seemed like a good idea at the time. If you would like to discuss the matter further, I would be glad to do so via PM.

    Pacman4K

Yes, the 2600 vertical resolution is better than the horizontal. Here is a new version where I increased the vertical speed the best I can in 4K. It kind of reminds me of the A8/5200 version where it doubles the vertical speed. Is this better or would you prefer the other version? Yes, that is much better. I agree, very similar to A8/5200 version. Has good feel when the game-speed increases in later levels.
  20. He is not selling any as far as I can see, but that is an impressive Mod : ) Actually, this was made for a customer. He talks about it in the video. I believe he charged a pretty hefty price though.
  21. Yes, compiled programs run now. Great work! Many thanks.
