Hi, anyone knows what to service/replace, when the internal loudspeaker of an ATARI 800 make hissing, cracking noises? Took it apart already, none of the capacitors looks bursted or misshaped. Best, F.

What's the latest Atari related thing(s) you've bought on ebay?
FlorianD replied to Ross PK's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
a 800 (NTSC), a 810 both in top condition (barely yellowing), full documentation in good shape. ATARI Artist cart with pad and docs, carts: missile cmd, assembler, basic, asteroids, basketball various books in good shape. Flight II in original package, Chess game, 2 ATARI sticks and an professional multi-system monitor (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) with full docs and cables. from an retired airline pilot, who was the original owner. :-) -
Had the same question in the German forum www.abbuc.de, where somebody pointed me out to a picture in a Polish forum. Turns out the black washer in my XC11 had a crack. This plastic tends to crack when under pressure after all these years. Same with the micro cogwheels in the 1020 printer (which can be replaced by metal ones from model helicopter supply). It ought to sit tight on the axle having the spring very much compressed between the wheel and the washer. Superglue helped to keep it in its place. Correct order of parts: wheel - spring with large end to wheel - little thin black metal washer, which sits inside the plastic washer - plastic washer with the flat side top, the side with the grove (for the little flat metal washer) downwards. NB the broken washer only negatively affects FFWD and REV operation, not PLAY. Other cogwheels (slower speed) are used for that transmission (PLAY). Thanks all for helping!

pictures say more than words. correct placement?

Hello, after opening a XC11, a conical spring and a little black washer/round plate fell out. Where do they go when reassembling the XC11? Why did I open it in the first place? I had one defective unit with bad counter and stuck PLAY-Button. Opend it, spring and washer fell out. Next unit had damaged exterior, so I opened that one (spring an washer fell out) and transplanted the mechanics, counter and cable. I suppose these go on the little black wheel between the two capstans: Wheel, spring (with large side to wheel), black washer (small side to spring). Is that right? Best, F.

ATARI 800 keyboard repair or "how I did my first root canal"
FlorianD replied to FlorianD's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
does anyone happen to know what material the plungers are? If its Nylon/Polyamide it can be glued (in this case welded) with formic acid (60% or 80% dependant on the exact type of plastic) I just found out If anyone has one plunger spare (i dont have any to try out myself) he could try. Would be a great help for fixing the plungers with broken edges. -
@luckybug: i mean the documentation of the "new" release/version after all bugs are debugged, extended memory use is included, CASE statement is in and ...else... . Nice docs for "Version 3.6+" and onwards.

this is all truly amazing ... speechless. Jac!, all the best, carry on with the excellent work. I'll be there when it comes to documentation design and layout, OK?

i had to superglue one plunger. Sticked at first, but the carefully sanded the outside with superfine sandpaper. Working pretty good. -
ATARI 800 keyboard repair or "how I did my first root canal"
FlorianD replied to FlorianD's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
unfortunately not. As said in above story, I called a friend, who has some broken ATARIs lying around. He provided me with spare parts. Even those plungers, but beware: the yellow ones are NOT compatible with the white ones. At least in my case they were not. I removed the severely cracked ones and superglued them back together. Time will tell how long this will last. I suppose not very long, the plastic is some weird type. -

ah, yep, one more thing: when cleaning the case parts, the bent metal sheet from underneath the flap (cartridge cover) came of. The black foam was completely disintegrated. Now, what would you recommend as replacement? Piece of foam and adhesive tape? How thick has the foam to be? and even one more: for convenience, I neatly wound the TV cord up, tied it together and put it in the left half of the case. I only use the monitor plug connection of the computer, never the TV connector. This way it does not dangle and lie around but is not disconnected and des not get lost. I am so happy I finally have an ATARI 800 of my own -
Ever wondered what a dentist sees when he does a root canal? Easy answer: almost nothing (I suppose, as I am not a dentist). Patient arrived last week, circa 35 year old person, brownish skin/tan, says his name is ATARI800buthecantspeakwithspacesbecausethreressthwrongwithhim. Definitely needs help. Poor guy. Anamnese: picture, sound, SIO, all OK. All keys work, except the space bar. Patient says he cant remember to have fallen or broke something, but he has faint memories of defender and too many smartbombs. Examination: patient is sedated (main power cut off) and carefully opened. Closer examination of keyboard underside reveal 2 cold solder joint, where one joint is open(!) and the belonging pin is missing. While desoldering the other pin it falls out. Oh my. Differential diagnosis: broken contact wings at spacebar (confirmed) Surgeon orders spare parts at organ donor. And lets patient sleep in artificial coma. 2 days later 4 pairs of contact wings arrive. Removal of broken contact wings turns out to be very difficult, because old contact wings have kind of "hooks". Heat from solder iron and fixing the patient to the operation theater desk helps. New contacts are inserted. Turn out to be a slight bit bigger. Much difficulties to insert due to narrow canal. Surgeon loosely sets contacts to hole in plastic (with a splinter tweezers from military surplus), an then carefully pushes them down using two very small screwdrivers. Solders pins to circuit board. Attaching the white plunger and spring back in is even more difficult, because the contact fingers are too close to each other. Trick: use long narrow strip of paper, fold in middle, insert with crease first between contact fingers. Then insert spring, then insert plunger with middle bridge between the paper until sets in. Pull out paper. "Bare" patient is connected to life supporting systems (power, video) and keyboard tested. Everything fine! Disconnect supplies, put patient back together in full. During the waiting time patients outer body was thoroughly and carefully cleaned. Crack in body shell was superglued. Reconnect patient to SIO, power and video. Wakes up with memo pad. All systems go. --- if anybody needs advice or more information, please contact me directly. Glad to help.

Hello, finally got an XMM801 in good working condition (but without anything else) to complete my XE collection. Now I search for the manual. Does anybody have a scan or PDF or knows where I can download that (Google didnt help)? Best regards, Florian

Animal Party is great, as is Yoomp! and every MultiJoy8 game and many others. Same is true for new hardware. -a little bit off topic: every time I get help, hints or information in a forum like here. every time I can share something with somebody seeking help or parts. this hobby is SO much fun! Best regards to everyone! Florian

to be honest: I still have an 1040STFM (again) with a mouse and 3 disks: "Super Sprint", "HacMan" and "North and South". These are the best games I remember for the ST. I remember "Lotus Turbo Challenge" was OK, and a few others. I would give quite a bit for a copy of "Full Metal Planet(e)". Sold my copy with the little metal model years ago when I sold my ST, *rats*.
-
Augh, shame on me! It is all so long gone, so far away, cant remember the correct numbers. I only owned an ST for a couple of years. Sticked with ATARI 8 Bit, that's why. Got the 700K mixed up with the Apple Mac disks, they had an odd 800k instead of 720k. And no eject button. CC - won't flame you at all! Thanks for telling me the right facts.
-
yes, the SF354 was the single sided 350k floppy disk, the SF314 was the double sided 700k one. when the ST (260, 512) came out around 1983 the SF354 were common but alomost everybody switched to a 314 as soon as possible. I thought about giving the front plate a better finish, perhaps rectangular flat LED mounted in a 45deg angle, but then, I had the LED at hand and would not put too much effort into it. Maybe later, and maybe I include a 2computer interface into that case, so that it is a 2way hub with a 2computer interface (where 2 ataris can share one SIO chain).

Hi all, another case mod / new device for my ATARI in XE style: http://www.akk.org/~flo/XSH4/xsh4.html If anyone is interested I will gladly pass on the schematics etc. Best regards, Florian

@sl0re I guess you mean the MultiJoy8 with "patching MULE". Good news: this was done at least 2 years ago by some assembler wizard from Germany. Google "MULE ATARI patch multijoy" and you will find it Specs for the multijoy8: http://raster.infos.cz/atari/hw/multijoy.htm Happy wampus hunting!

@pepax: yes you are right, I'm collecting the stuff needed for cleanup. Not easy to get the H2O2 in the needed strength. ...just recognized the english text for the XMc08+ is missing. Sorry, it will follow soon.
