So,  I got a stack of games today and was able to try different cartridges,  with the same results.  I've also got a parts console coming will probably try swapping out a few chips. Still open to suggestions...

IMO, multi carts are a decent option. Tons of games,  keeps things portable with no extra cartridges to lug around.

Imo, the seagull 78 is the way to go. You can use a standard genesis controller or any of the arcade style genesis controllers.

They're horrible.  All of the side button controllers of that era are pretty bad.
