  1. What's going on here? Someone gave me an Xbox a couple of days ago that he found. He didn't tell me where he found it, but the thing wouldn't power up. I'm going to use it for parts. I guess some folks are really turning their backs on Xbox now that 360 is here. We know MS already turned it's back on it. BTW a modded Xbox is one of the most awesome video/multimedia items you can own. I wouldn't worry about it over heating.

  2. Setting up homebrew on the PSP is a fussy pain in the ass IMHO. I upgraded mine and haven't really missed the hassle -- I have other toys which can do similar things if I really feel the need for portable emulation.

Actually.. it isn't anymore. Absolutely non-hassle. Piracy (not that I'd recommend it) is easy on it... just clear out your mem card, pop on the latest Devhook on there, and bam. Pretty much the entire library of PSP games up to this point is playable either as original discs or ISO's, as well as UMD's. As for homebrew, most of the sets are already packaged to be dumped right there onto the PSP\GAMES folder and off you go. Zero hassle :)

Very true. Although obviously a lot weaker PSP is now a lot like have portable modded Xbox as long as it's 1.50 with the lastest Devhook.

  3. You can't tell a tone with reading text, but people get so touchy these days so I was just trying to avoid it all if it was going that direction. Despite all that, I'm still glad to be able to play what I can in the form of Stella on my PSP. That's all that really matters on the subject to me. I see room for improvements and welcome them if they get made.

  4. We can agree to disagree I guess, because I don't care enough about this to get into a big flame war. BTW in the thread there everything is talking about Stella 1.0 not Stella 2.0 which is improved over the 1st one. I'll be honest I haven't played a real 2600 in many years and maybe that's adding to it, but I have no issues with the sound in Stella 2.0.

  5. I've really missed my Stella (Atari 2600) emulator.

Why... I think it kinda blows :P Someone outta port the much improved latest Stella to the PSP, the current one there is so outdated :(

The 2nd one wasn't too bad for me. What's so bad about it? It's 2600 so obviously it runs the games fine. There is obviously room for improvement in the menu.

  6. Doesn't anyone else thing all these firmware whatever update things are just a little annoying? I mean don't you have to updgrade and install shit to play regular games? Maybe I'm confused, but the notion of having to update my hardware in any way is an enormous deterrent. Sounds like that cumbersome PC gaming scene

we've been through this on another thread... please dont open the floodgates on that question again as all hell will break lose. lol

Right. For those us who are a bit techically inclined, we know we'll never have to update. I've never update past 1.50 again. I'm so happy to be able to play my MLB 06 and Smackdown Vs. Raw 06, and to have a fully function emulation PSP again. I've really missed my Stella (Atari 2600) emulator.

  7. I haven't played a Vectrex regularly since I gave mine to my cousin about 15 years ago, but I always used overlays. I know it's going to make it more expensive, but when I finally buy another Vectrex I'll buy only games with overlays.

  8. You guys really think that Lieberman can win as an independent candidate? Now THAT'S the political kiss of death.

    JR

It's not really the kiss of death. Lowell Weicker was the governor of Connecticut when I left the state in 1997 and he ran as an indepednent. It depends on the candidate, where he or she running and the opposing candidates. Experienced politicians who become independents often do ok in state elections. More often though it candidates with no shots of winning running as independents.

  9. They were new and kind of a hot item and most common criminals don't know anything about modding systems. Plus UMD cases are smaller than DVD or CD cases.

Yeah, but it still doesn't explain why old Nintendo, SNES, Genesis, and SMS games that were about the size of VHS movies (a little thinner), PSX games which were the exact size as CDs, and new games, which are the exact size as DVDs, have always been put in those cases.

I think stores were more worried about kids opening the boxes and stuffing the carts in their pants than they were for CDs and DVDs. Plus the games cost at least 2-3 more than CDs DVDs. Think about it, how many time have you seen an OPM or OPX magazine on a rack and the demo disc was missing?

  10. My Target put UMD movies in the movie section a while ago which was a good thing. I thought UMDs could've worked if the were $10 or less, but oh well. A PSP is a lot more portable than a portable DVD player. The Blockbuster theif shows why UMD movie were 1st put in cases along with games. They were new and kind of a hot item and most common criminals don't know anything about modding systems. Plus UMD cases are smaller than DVD or CD cases.

  11. Without getting into it too much - even on sites like these, people who say they are playing backup copies of their games 9/10 times are playing illegal copies. If the 360 is eating discs, I find that completely understandable and would do the same myself, but generally I see people using that as an excuse to hurt the hobby by playing downloaded games. I just hate to see widespread use of this turn the 360 into the Dreamcast

Doesn't seem likely. Microsoft has already addressed the problem by changing the drive in later models of the Xbox 360. One's hackable, the other isn't. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Xbox Live will check the firmware on the DVD-ROM and block any users who have modified it. They've done it in the past with the original Xbox and it's likely they'll do it with the new system as well.

Has anyone had any luck writing emulators for the Xbox 360 yet? I might consider sailing the pira-seas to get a copy of Culdcept, if nobody releases it in the states, but I'm more interested in playing all those great old games that SHOULD have been available on Xbox Live Arcade from the very beginning.

    JR

The big problem is right now the 360 won't run any code not signed by Microsoft. So far there's no way around that. I'm sure it will eventually happen, but there's no telling when it will happen.

  12. Thanks again for all the comments; keep 'em coming!

So there aren't any 2D shooters/platformers for the Xbox? Besides retropacks? Or were the Metal Slug games new...?

A note: I don't have a Gamecube, a PS2, or anything else newer than a Dreamcast. The last game I bought new was probably Tony Hawk (the first one) for N64. So as far as new games, I am way, way, way out of the loop.

    So when you say,

Ninja Gaiden Black is God of War/Devil May Cry type action.

I have a very vague notion of what Devil May Cry is like, but I have never seen it, let alone played it. And I've never even heard of God of War. Though I've played plenty of Ninja Gaiden (NES)!

    I'm just saying...

Man you are out of the loop, but it's never too late to enjoy great games. Here's a Gamespot review for Ninja Gaiden Black. You should check out some more reviews there on the games mention to get a more in depth overview of them.

  13. Do to what you said you like it would be a crime not to check out Ninja Gaiden Black and Fable. Ninja Gaiden Black is God of War/Devil May Cry type action. Fable is a more adult Zelda type action RPG. Chronicials of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay is good too. It's first person, but it's more a a first person adventure with some shooting. Those are all Xbox exclusives.

Edit: Just to make it clear - I do believe you would use it just for backups - I just mean as a blanket statement that most of the time "I can play backups" does mean someone is downloading backups. I in no way am including you in these group.

Thanks I appreciate that. It's like with PSP. I actually like the system and support it. While so many don't even think about buy games for it, but they'll play them. They just download them.
