    Sorry, first of all, for my whining on the Jag videos thread I started.

     

    So, at any rate, I've looked on Ebay, and I can't seem to find a complete Jaguar console (just the cartridge unit) for less then $80! Are there any online stores that sell retro systems that stock Jaguars?

     

    Well the CD unit usually sells for more than $80. So I doubt you can find the regular unit plus CD unit for less than $100 anywhere. Ebay is the cheapest place to buy Jaguar stuff.

    You can use your Live account with both. You just need to activate it on the XBox before the 360.

     

    So you're saying I need to cancel the account I made on the Xbox 360, then make another one on the original Xbox and migrate it? Bleech. That kind of blows.

    Yeah it does. I made my 1st and only live account on 360. When I found out I had to do that I figured I'd rely on BC, but oh well.

    Since I'm not made of money and new games and the other system I collect for can get quite expensive I have no problems emulating plenty of systems on my Xbox. However, if money isn't an issue why even ask? The real stuff is cooler, except not having to switch out carts.

    I'm suprised nobody said Gameboy, with the scrolling down Gameboy and the ding. If you turn a Gameboy on without a cartridge, you get a solid block that scrolls down the screen, but no ding that i can remember. So part of the programming is built into the gameboy the other part in the cart, i think thats close enough to count.

     

    Well how can it count if there isn't even a ding without a game inserted? The question was what was "What was the 1st system to have a startup sound?" and Gameboy clearly was not the 1st one to do it with a game inserted. SMS did it before them. Really it doesn't even make sense for a non disc based system to have a start up screen and sound without a game inserted.

    It is funny seeing these old posts. Clearly people under estimated PS2 since it's dominated the console market for almost 6 years now. Also the graphics are much better than the were in 2002. While the 2 other consoles still have somewhat better graphics they haven't made as great improvements as PS2 did from 2002. No one saw one that coming.

    I dunno, emulation on a 1.50 PSP is pretty sweet. Amiga, SNES, Genesis, Turbo Graphx 16, and Neo Geo all run pretty much at full speed.

     

    Yeah your right, but you can't play any of the commercial games, forcing you to buy 2 PSPs if you want to play commercial games. Whats the point, the GP2X already has all of those emulators, all are good and getting better, for about half the cost.

     

    Actually, as of this week nearly every released game can be played either in ISO form, from UMD or both thanks to the new devhook. Check the link below. It's clearly a cat and mouse game with Sony and the hackers. The amount of work to keep 1.50 and keep on playing new games is not for the faint of heart IMO, but it can be done. So the point is you can have new PSP games and great running emulators as well as other homebrew all in the same unit. That sounds like a sweet deal to me. Just have to make sure you get your hand on a PSP with firmware no higher than 2.0. And a GP2X is not 1/2 the price of a PSP. They are almost the same price now unless you know where you can get one for $100. If so let me know.

    I'm not a huge fan of the mag anymore, but they still have a couple of good things in there each issue. Last time I signed up for this about a year ago the sent me the regular magazine in the mail for free for about 6 months. So you can read the last issue instantly online once you sign up and install the reader. I'm checking it it now.

    Let me say I am a proud Jag collector with about 40 games for it. I really like some of the Jag's games, but I have a 360 as well and I've been pretty overjoyed with the system. You've already made your choice, but the only reason I'd say go for the Jag now is once you get the 360 there's a good chance you'll really want to focus on it and forget about the Jaguar. The Jaguar is a more a cool collector's item with awesome game boxes than a great console IMO, but you should be glad you checked it out. If you really want to get crazy with it, get a Pro-controller too. It's so much better than the standard one.

    If it was legit it would be worth $90 to me. Prices would probably come down after they been around for a while too. Carrying around 1 PSP is better than 2. Also please tell me where you can buy a PSP for $90???

I know downloads both legal and let's not forget illegal have put a big hit on CD sales, but people still buy CDs like it or not. Eventually CD sales may totally be a thing of the past it's not happening this year and most likey they'll be selling 5 years from now too. I really think the biggest thing that hurt CD sales is many people rather steal music than pay for it, despite the rise in paid downloads.

    Sure Best Buy has a huge selection, as does Wal-Mart and Target. But there is a commmon thread. They are all large national chains that aren't specializing in music. The stores that specialize in music, both local and national, are suffering. There is just no money in it. Local stores are really pushing used CD's to survive. People are buying these used CD's, ripping them and then selling them back.

     

    As far as downloading, I never said that legal downloads were killing CD's. Although, legal downloads are getting bigger and bigger every year.

     

    My kids do get CD's as gifts, but they are putting them on the computer and MP3 player. They don't even play the cd after that. They are just as happy getting a download gift card because they are learning not to miss the physical piece of plastic itself. As a matter of fact, they sometimes trade music with friends directly from MP3 player to computer.

     

    I'm 49 years old and I missed albums when I converted to cd's in the early 80's because of the sheer physical presence of a 12 inch record and the art that went along with it. But now I don't really care about the cd itself, just the music.

     

    I'm totally agree that mom and pop CD stores are dying out. The same goes for for movie and video game stores too. It's too hard for them to compete and make a profit these days. It's sad I guess that's progress for you. I've seen 3 different stores in my area that were small chains either go all the way out for business or close most their stores. These were all stores I liked. Swap USA (videogames) , Media Play and CD Warehouse (both sold all types of media). I'm 33 and appreciate the hard media, but I can see kids today not caring. I'm assuming we are all collectors here. What's the fun in collecting downloads?

    10 years ago, I was on a 28.8k modem and couldn't download crap. Today I download all kinds of content with the "basic" DSL in my area and it is at 1.5m. My sister has a 6.0m cable broadband connection and I find it amazing how fast downloads are! It's very likely that in 10 years a basic internet connection will be around 20.0m with a premium connection running at 100.0m. There would be no problems downloading games, even Hi-def ones, at those speeds.

     

    I don't know what you are saying about music downloads though. They have killed CD sales. I know very few under 20 year olds who don't have some sort of MP3 player. They look at portable CD players as a joke. Just go to a garage sale. People are selling CD's like they were records a few years ago for only 1 - 2 dollars each.

    I think the problem with this idea of "phasing" out of media is assuming everyone who plays games, buys movies or music has a high speed internet connection. There are still a lot of people who buy all of these things that are still on dial and what's even harder to believe there are plenty more with no internet connection at all.

    A while back, all music was sold on paper so you could play it on your piano. Then someone came up with these new-fangled music playback devices. The talk back then would have gone something like:

     

    I think the problem with this idea of "phasing" out of sheet music is assuming everyone who enjoys music has a high-fidelity music player. There's still a lot of music fans who have to play it on their own instruments and what's even harder to believe is there are plenty more with no electricity at all!

     

    Times change.

     

    We could be at all game downloads in 10 years IMO, but broadband would have to be in every gamers' home and the speeds need greatly to increase from the ISPs proivde and what the consoles can handle. Downloads move quite slowly on a 360 compared to a PC and even a PC is too slow with a fast connection to download 8 GBs in a timely manner. Plus games should be bigger than that by then. Consoles would definately need more RAM so games could download rapidly while still being able to play the console. Also, if broadband isn't even every home by then would gamer makers be willing to turn their back on those gaming dollars? I have serious doubts about that. Lastly, something to think about is we are no where near all music downloads yet and that's a lot easier transition for pull off.
