  1. No delay. Boot’s like nothing is plugged in the SIO port.
  2. I followed Marius’ instructions using v4.1 Atari 800 emulator on Linux. Everything works fine on the emulator. The atr file is created. Will boot on the emulator. But, it will not boot on real hardware. Few beeps and freezes with the cursor in upper left hand corner. Does the same thing for the diskette atr files. Tried several Sparta dos art files downloaded from two sites. One 3.2 atr I had for years. One I just downloaded from here. http://ftp.pigwa.net/stuff/collections/holmes%20cd/ Even the 3.2g fails. Tried booting both the xf551 and sio2sd, but goes to basic. Changing the sio2sd device number in its settings didn’t help.
  3. Thank you for the information. I have Sparta Dos 3.2 on floppies. But think SpartaDos X would be better. Where’s the best place to get it? I know there used to be a cartridge version. But I haven’t found it for sale anywhere. But booting off SD would be preferable. It frees up the cart slot.
  4. I would like to setup my Atari to behave like a pc with a hard drive. I have Lotharek’s SIO2SD and SIO2USB. The MyDos the SIO2SD is OK. But I would prefer to use the Sparta DOS command line shell. Is there a way to configure my Atari to boot a Sparta DOS 16mg disk image? And load ATR programs from the command line like we did on DOS PC’s? I worry powering off the Atari every time I want to load a different program will cause the power switch to fail. I had one on XF551 freeze on me before.
  5. Watched a recent Commodore video on YouTube by a man called Adrian Black. While demonstrating installing an Arduino ROM switcher, he mentioned he added heat sinks to many of the ICs as a precaution. That has me wondering if if the Atari ICs ever get too warm at room temperature? He shows them around 8 minutes
  6. Turning off top drive didnt help. But I changed to not load the menu every time. Set D1 as the default drive. Loaded Galahad into D1. Turned off and on. Booted it with the 400/800 OmniView 256 rom. Loaded perfectly. And no more constant game crashing when I or a Knight is killed. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
  7. I have a few more questions/issues. My machine has a toggle switch to switch between the stock ROM and the OmniView 256. The SIO2SD loads with both selected. But it either freezes after displaying the menu. But no keys work when using the OmniView ROM. The OmnieView is a modified 400/800 RevB ROM. I was trying to use that ROM because the APX game Galahad and the Holy Grail frequently crashes on the XE ROM. Some research suggested using a translator disk to fix that. I dont have it. So I tried the built in ROM.
  8. Yesterday I received my SIO2SD from Lotharek. Wish I had gone that route 5 years ago. I've watched his video on how to use it. But one question I have is, there a way once a program is loaded to get back to its DOS menu without turning the Atari off and on again?
  9. Sorry for the delay. Between work and storms, I haven't had a chance to setup the 800 again. The other thing I noticed is the 800's screen is dimmer. And the Text from the Select/Option screen wasn't as crisp as the 65XE. Both connected to the same TV with the same Composite video cable. Changes cables didn't help. https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157690907094343
  10. A boxed Timex/Sinclair 1000 I recently purchased arrived today. I decided I wanted to see something like what the folks in the UK had when I was using my Atari 800. The seller said it was untested. But it appeared to have never been used. First I tested the 9VDC power supply with an analog and digital meter. It was reading about 11 - 12VDC on the analog meter. Higher on the digital. About 14V. But they both read higher than rated on some other DC adapters I have. So I plugged it into the PC without connecting to the TV. Well, there was no sound, smoke or heat right away. So I hooked it to the LCD TV. Turned it on. First wasn't sure it was working. A lot of interference on the TV. Even in the sound. So I muted that. The K appears in the lower left. I tried typing some keys. But what I pressed did not translate to the screen. So I thought maybe keyboard. But then I pressed P, which should automatically display the PRINT keyword. It didn't print PRINT. And each time it was different variation of a 5 character word. So is this a bad keyboard or something at the board level? Thanks, Glenn
  11. Hate to resurrect a dead thread. But I've finally made some time to get back to programming on the Atari. Came across the following article. https://archive.org/details/1983-06-anticmagazine/page/n23. This clarifies how the Assembly routines are converted to data statements in BASIC.
  12. Some of the color on the restored NTSC 800 I received yesterday looked soft. Some of PAC Mans board lines were dots instead of solid lines. Theyre solid on my 65 XE. Guess I should try another power supply.
  13. I think were home Toto. Which prong of the Atari AC adapters plug is the hot line? Need to keep this one safe.
  14. Ive been researching the vertical line issue. It sounds fairly common when connected to LCD displays via S-Video. But Im using straight composite video with a cable from Best-Electronics. And my 65XE has the issue to. My research turned up this article. http://www.oldcomputers.it/parts/atari/130xe/docs/sv130-1.html. But it sounds like FlashJazzCats 1-2-2010 post to this thread http://atariage.com/forums/topic/155245-vertical-lines-on-many-xe-computers/page-2?hl=%20lcd%20%20xe%20%20vertical%20%20line Says the articles resistor values make it worse on LCDs. Of course he is probably working with PAL unit. While mine is NTSC. And the article says the XE lines RF modulator is required for composite videos (pin 4) signal. Im at a loss of what to try next.
  15. Purchased an 800 Yesterday. And a few weeks ago I purchased an SIO2SD from Lotharek’s ebay store. Waiting for both to arrive.
  16. The price if the refurbished 800 I had been watching on ebay dropped to $179. So I bought it on impulse. The Mrs. was not happy. But hey, she spends more than that on shoes. And certainly purses.
  17. The issue only occurred when the toggle switch was up. This was running a different ROM. Pressing shift caps brought it back to uppercase. When the toggle switch is off, it's using the 65XE's standard ROM. And I could press it to toggle between in upper and lower case. I think the Omniview may have been using the OSB for the 800.
  18. My XE was modded to include David Young's OmniView 256(80col + 256K ram) mod. I'll have to check what version of OS it is reporting. I know ? PEEK(65527) is returning 2. But this has occurred with it toggled on and off. I'll double check the connection and TV settings. The converter was a cheap one from Amazon. I got what I paid for. Thanks for your help.
  19. Ive noticed some issues with my 65XE. While coding with the onboard BASIC, I accidentally pressed caps lock. The case changed to lower. But pressing it again did not return it to uppercase. Only pressing reset worked. I heard the key click sound on the monitor each time I pressed it. And the Mylar was replaced last year. Any ideas? On another note, I noticed the basic back ground has some vertical lines running across the screen. Im using Best-Electronics composite video cable. It does the same thing on another LCD TV. PAC Man looks fine. Only the basic blue screen editor has these slightly off blue stripes. So I tried this : https://youtu.be/0rrc2zptsbU. But the words were fuzzy at both 720 and 1080p. Could I have received a dud?
  20. Doctor_X, Im in Fort Worth. The Mrs had plans for yesterday. Ill have to try another weekend.
  21. Thanks everyone for your opinions. I think I will go visit the National Video Game Museum in Frisco, TX today. (http://www.nvmusa.org/) I think I read somewhere they have retro consoles and computers displayed there. Maybe seeing one up close will help me decide. I can only hope they have some you can at least touch. As for the 65XE's keyboard, isn't there an upgrade for that available at Best-Electronics?
  22. I was nine when I was first exposed to computers. That was an Atari 800. It was replaced by a 65XE. I still have the 65XE. But sadly I threw out the 800 in 92. Im trying to decide if I want to buy restored 800. Can you go home again? Or will it collect dust stored in the closet? What has been yalls experience.
  23. This is a very cool project. Im sure somewhere in this thread this has been asked. But I havent found it yet. Can this be built as a stock 8bit Atari. Im thinking because of the PS2 keyboard, the computer requires the Ultimate1MB. Is that true?
  24. You don't have to replace the entire keyboard. If you remove the bottom keyboard's bottom sheet metal cover, you can see the full mylar. That part can be replaced. And will likely resolve your issue. It is all one piece. The flat cable you see coming out is part of that mylar sheet. http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/XE%20Mylar%20Pictures.htm
  25. The mylar for these keyboards tend to fail with age. You could try replacing it with one from Best Electronics. I replaced mine last year. It works perfectly now. I doubt it's the POKEY chip. I would first try new mylar.
