  1. Unless they phase out the 3DS and replace it with a "Switch Lite" or something, 100 million+ just doesn't seem possible. Those are ridiculous numbers.
  2. So I cancelled a domain name I had through eNom, but they're still trying to renew the WHOIS protection. Glad it's tied to an expired credit card.

  3. I am so burned out by people with learned helplessness with computers...

  4. The horrible, off-pitch start of a new life anthem for 2600 Pac-Man could be amusing. (Not arcade, but kind of close. Not really.) Sinistar roars for text messages. Pole Position anthem for a ringtone.
  5. I wonder if Inti could swing a retro-styled bundle for a physical release? Mighty Gunvolt Burst, Bloodstained Curse of the Moon, Blaster Master Zero on one cart for $30?
  6. Given the titles I really want a PS4 for are T4K, Rez VR and Tetris Effect, I'm beginning to suspect it'd be cheaper to just buy some LSD.

Love these psychedelic type games myself! Haven't done shrooms etc since college and earlier so it's fun to relive with a good face melting game.

Yeah, I'm like the drug user without the drugs as well. I didn't know about Tetris Effect, looks like something I'd enjoy, thanks for the tip.

  7. Sweet. Can you rotate the screen on these? I'm imagining flipping my 50" HDTV on its side for the biggest, baddest DK experience the world has ever seen. Ooh nice, look at the launch options.
  8. When did people start spamming their old console listings on eBay with "Launch Edition"?

  9. I'm not a huge Metal Gear fan, but it never fails to put a smile on my face when somebody has the noise guards make when they notice you as an alert on their phone.
  10. I'd like to build an arcade stick for my Genesis - I'd be using it for games like Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Thunderforce IV, etc. Any recommendation on brands for the hardware? I can't think of a reason why the same type of 8-way stick I use for fighting games wouldn't work, but there may or may not be nuances out there of which I'm totally unaware.
  11. Model 1 High-Definition Sega Genesis (w/TMSS) and Lightening Force (in box, no manual.)
  12. Sony Trinitron KV27FS100. Had to use two partially working remotes to get into service mode and calibrate it, but the geometry is about 95% now. Hooked up the Sega Genesis Model 1 HDG I picked up and introduced my son to just how I used to game back in the day. He got bored after five minutes and went back upstairs to the Switch.
  13. Was playing a Ms Pac-Man arcade unit today and on an early maze, three of the ghosts refused to come out. Is that common?

Eltigro: I actually felt compelled to check. I used my left hand this time!

Pac-Man does that too when a maze is nearly empty and only Blinky will chase you, for a while!

That happens when you’re lousy at the game and keep dying at the early boards :P

I haven't checked, but it shows the "produced under license" splash so I assume it's TMSS.

  15. If we're desperate for memory, just ask the player to remember some values for us and input them later.
  16. First weekday before summer classes start, and instructors are finally realizing they need to setup their classes in Canvas. Busy, busy day for the one guy on campus who supports Canvas (me!)

I was practically allergic to chalk (Horrible Stuff),...When I "Student taught", it was all whiteboards, which is Awesome,...you can sniff the markers ;)

Blackboard and Canvas are software platforms schools use to host class materials online. Instructors post all the homework, tests, web content, grades, etc. for students to access.

jaybird3rd, tests and exams are actually the easiest to migrate. Export from Blackboard, import into Canvas. Some of the question types don't exactly match up, but it does save a lot of work.

  17. I tried explaining it, but he insists everybody else is wrong and furthermore - everybody who disagrees is all the same person who's been stalking him and he's reporting us all to the mods? I think he has it confused with storing data in the vram of other computers/consoles (which people apparently did) and doesn't realize that the references to scanlines in VBLANK and HBLANK and overscan are being used as shorthand for a number of processor cycles.

  19. Guy on reddit made this claim: Fun Fact: The Atari 2600 had so little memory that some creative devs used TV scanlines above the viewing area (usually for factory testing) as memory registers, giving them extra space to store bits as black or white pixels. And is using some links that talk about using VBLANK and HBLANK to run code as support. Is this a thing? 2600 has no frame buffer, no VRAM, and hence no way to even know what was drawn to a scanline once its drawn, right?
  20. All I have to say is, if you're selling a 4K HDR capable box that runs 2600 games, it better have the greatest goddamned phosphor screen filters known to man. I wanna be able to *feel* the bloom.

  21. If you will have Internet access, any of the Jackbox party packs is amazing for group play. You don't even use controllers, everybody uses a smartphone while the console serves up a master screen. They're available on every modern platform under the sun (Xbone, PS4, Switch, Steam). As to the console itself, it's hard to not recommend the Switch. Comes with two controllers? Check. Portable as hell? Check. Has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, one of the finest multiplayer pick up and play games of all time? Check. By next year, it should have Smash Bros., which is another great party game (as long as none of you are ridiculous experts who slaughter the entire playing field.)
  22. I prefer Alien over Aliens, but I can see why people would view it other way. Both fantastic movies. The real brilliance was the willingness to put Aliens in a different genre (action-horror vs survival horror.) But I think that shows why good movie sequels are so rare compared to video game sequels. Aliens worked so well because it wasn't a retread of Alien. But if we totally shake up the formula for say, Contra, we'd not like it because we wanted more Contra.
  23. Anybody else remember this little oddity of a game for Sega Saturn? Death Tank was a Scorched Earth clone hidden within Powerslave for Sega Saturn, and Duke Nukem 3-D contained its sequel - Death Tank Zwei. Supported the multitap adapter and was bizarrely fun. I easily spent more time with friends in DTZ than I did Powerslave or Duke 3D combined. And this is despite also owning Saturn Bomberman. There was an XBox Live release many years later, but I never really looked into it.
  24. I think the only reason Mega Man 3 isn't held up as one of the true greats on NES is because Mega Man 2 exists.
  25. I think video game sequels are often superior to the originals because they're iterations on a design. Designers had the ability to see what did and didn't work, and apply that to the follow-up. The means "X+1 is basically X but better." Castlevania III is basically Castlevania but better. Halo 2 is basically Halo but better. Ninja Gaiden 2 is basically Ninja Gaiden but better. Half-Life 2 is basically Half-Life but better. Super C is basically Contra but better. etc. This is hard to do with movies because if you do the same thing again, it risks feeling derivative. How many movie sequels tried to be the same but better/bigger and fell flat? (Matrix Reloaded, Hangover 2, Anchorman 2, etc.) Unless it's Godfather/Godfather II, then it's a goddamned masterpiece.
