  1. I have the Switch version of Shovel Knight and it has the guy who asks you to tap an Amiibo, so it must be.
  2. Unless you have some kind of persistent storage in addition to the cartridge, it wouldnt be useable as a bbs.
  3. Ive beaten it once on Veteran mode. Fairly short game. Im replaying the new game mode now that gets added for beating the game once. Its pretty nice. Im a huge Castlevania nut, and this is a good homage. Design doesnt feel as cohesive and music is forgettable, but hard to beat for $10.00.

This game may be dumb, but at least we can agree I like it. Unlike Rampage, which nobody likes.

  5. Or as its PlayStation port was referred to, "Samurai Slowdown."
  6. I'll continue to argue for the superiority of Castlevania III over Rondo of Blood. The core gameplay mechanics are extremely similar, but CVIII simply offers more stages, more characters, more challenge. Rondo's excellent, but I think it's a close second. I'm also bitter at Rondo for being the first PC-Engine game I ever played, and then assumed the rest of the titles on that platform would have similar graphic and music quality. Nope.
  7. I'd skip Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance on GBA, and jump straight into Aria of Sorrow. All the DS games in the series are good. Dawn of Sorrow is a direct sequel to Aria.
  8. Now there's a Timex Sinclair 1000 for sale locally for $25. I need to stop looking at these ads.

What Flojomoja said. It was (just) barely adequate as a first cheap computer when I was 11. No color, no sound, 2K of memory, crummy membrane keyboard.... not even nostalgia is enough for me to want one again!

I enjoyed getting one just to write a tiny BASIC program to draw a circle (^^)

I spoke with the UCLA sociologist who has been sniffing around for early gamers. I shared this magazine with him, which gives a good idea of how deep a [crazy] person could go with the tech from those days.

But as for spending $25 on it? You're better off taking a friend out for burritos.

  9. I keep waffling on buying a Powermac G4 for $40 locally. I think it'll boot OS9. If I stay indecisive for a few more days I'm sure it'll disappear and make the decision for me.

Yeah, let it go, and if you really want it, virtualize it.

If I seem down on collecting classic Macs, it's only because I've been in that particular monkey house too long myself. They're nicer to look at than to own.

If you want to run SheepShaver (OS9 emulation) on a modern Mac, this looks like an easy way to get it going: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/macos9osx.html

It should work just as well in Windows or Linux, though.

Same here... have owned several classic Apple systems throughout the years and none of them held my attention for very long. If you have a specific use for something like this (ie: using as an iTunes jukebox for the basement or garage sound system), I'd say go for it - otherwise, yeah... I'd be skipping it too.

I bought a Mac Classic II last year - my first B&W, 68k type of Mac. I enjoyed playing a few games on the real hardware because it's so unique. Ended up selling it for more than I paid, though, because I just didn't use it enough and I had a lot of compatibility problems with a lot of software. I didn't want to put in the time to futz with it or really collect. It *was* fun to own for a while and I'm glad I had some time with the real thing. I was also worried it'...

  10. It's been resurrected and he publishes new strips everyday on Facebook and GoComics.com.
  11. Castlevania 3 followed by Rondo of Blood. SCIV is a good game, but I find the difficulty is just too low and it felt like a step backwards (no branching paths, only one character) after Castlevania 3.
  12. I like to imagine a history where noted programmer and co-founder of Activision David Crane was actually Denny Crane.

  13. Now that my 5200 works, I've lost all interest in it. Need to find a new broken console or computer to work on.

The 5200 and 25 games was free. Now that I've modded it to use a normal power supply, maybe I should sell for some 800XL cash...

  14. My trick is to ask the shop owner if they have any Atari stuff they don't display. It sells so poorly that they probably list it on eBay and have it tucked away in storage rather than taking up shelf space. Going in to my local shop this weekend to test out some 5200 trackballs I found out about this way.
  15. I'd just like Ben to release whatever code/plans he has and let the community run with it.
  16. Gold Box Companion acts as a wrapper for the DOS versions and can be used to add the fix command and do some other nifty stuff.
  17. Is there a way to translate pot values without involving a microcontroller like arduino?
  18. Would missile command even be playable with a digital stick? It seems like one of the few games that works really well with the 5200 controller.
  19. You all may remember me breaking my 5200 when trying to add the power mod a few weeks back. Finally figured out that I damaged one of the capacitors on the board when I was working inside of it - replaced that and reinstalled the power mod, and it all works great! While I was in there, I removed the soldered in RF cable and added an RCA jack and patch cable to the built-in RCA jack so that I can plug a more traditional RF switch into the back. Powered it on, tested it out, and it all works fine! Now for my question: What size screws does the case take? I kind of lost them during all the time I spent working on this thing.
  20. I propose that it wasn't Nintendo, but Nintendo's heavy use of cartridge-based mappers to allow games to continuously improve throughout the lifespan that saved gaming. If Nintendo games had kept the same complexity as the first run of "black box" titles, it would have burned itself out early and suffered the same fate as Atari.
  21. Picked up Real Bout Fatal Fury Special last night for Switch, it's part of the "ACA Neo*Geo" collection. Did it out of curiosity to see how good the emulation was, how the options were, etc. It's actually quite nice. 10 different filtering options for scanlines, button remapping, can play both US and JPN versions, dipswitches, supports at least one save state. It's also the arcade rather than home version. Makes me wish I had a better controller to play it (The Switch Pro controller is nice, but the d-pad just isn't doing it for me.) If the emulator is introducing much input lag beyond what my HDTV does in game mode, I'm not noticing it. Now I need to go back to pick up SamSho 2. Also hope we get more of the Metal Slug series released (What's consensus on the best Metal Slug? X?)
  22. Graphics look underwhelming. I fully appreciate "retro" styled graphics, but these just look plain. It'd be cool to see some fake phosphor effects or other stuff to spice it up. Some depth of field to make the web feel like it has real depth, change the stuff in the background from random things to something that gives a real sense of movement, etc. I mean - once I finally get a PS4 this is still a day one pickup for me, but I'd like to have seen a bit more effort put into it.
  23. Loved King's Bounty. Didn't know it was considered "Lesser Known."
  24. In some ways I prefer the SMS version of Sonic. It can't do the "SONIC GO FAST" as well as the Genesis, so it wasn't designed around it. Which is a good thing to me - I found that you often got punished for trying to go fast in the Genesis version.
