  1. Dull Sunday - drank a bottle of wine in one go. Wish drinking didn't make me depressed and nostalgic. But at least I'm at the right place for nostalgia, right?

Which is a romantic way of saying back in my bachelor days, I enjoyed getting drunk and watching Futurama.

Misery isn't the only thing that loves company, nostalgia does too. Nostalgia can be kinda isolating sometimes, when the past seems so much better than the now that you sort of disconnect from modern society, but at least there are communities like this one to share in it with.

Mainly visiting Black Flag BBS (blackflag.acid.org) and Agency (agency.bbs.nz) I was running one for a few months, but the novelty wore off and there were others that could provide more than I could.

  3. So I cancelled a domain name I had through eNom, but they're still trying to renew the WHOIS protection. Glad it's tied to an expired credit card.

  4. I am so burned out by people with learned helplessness with computers...

  5. Given the titles I really want a PS4 for are T4K, Rez VR and Tetris Effect, I'm beginning to suspect it'd be cheaper to just buy some LSD.

Love these psychedelic type games myself! Haven't done shrooms etc since college and earlier so it's fun to relive with a good face melting game.

Yeah, I'm like the drug user without the drugs as well. I didn't know about Tetris Effect, looks like something I'd enjoy, thanks for the tip.

  7. Was playing a Ms Pac-Man arcade unit today and on an early maze, three of the ghosts refused to come out. Is that common?

Eltigro: I actually felt compelled to check. I used my left hand this time!

Pac-Man does that too when a maze is nearly empty and only Blinky will chase you, for a while!

That happens when you’re lousy at the game and keep dying at the early boards :P

I haven't checked, but it shows the "produced under license" splash so I assume it's TMSS.

  9. First weekday before summer classes start, and instructors are finally realizing they need to setup their classes in Canvas. Busy, busy day for the one guy on campus who supports Canvas (me!)

I was practically allergic to chalk (Horrible Stuff),...When I "Student taught", it was all whiteboards, which is Awesome,...you can sniff the markers ;)

Blackboard and Canvas are software platforms schools use to host class materials online. Instructors post all the homework, tests, web content, grades, etc. for students to access.

jaybird3rd, tests and exams are actually the easiest to migrate. Export from Blackboard, import into Canvas. Some of the question types don't exactly match up, but it does save a lot of work.

  10. All I have to say is, if you're selling a 4K HDR capable box that runs 2600 games, it better have the greatest goddamned phosphor screen filters known to man. I wanna be able to *feel* the bloom.

This game may be dumb, but at least we can agree I like it. Unlike Rampage, which nobody likes.

  12. Now there's a Timex Sinclair 1000 for sale locally for $25. I need to stop looking at these ads.

What Flojomoja said. It was (just) barely adequate as a first cheap computer when I was 11. No color, no sound, 2K of memory, crummy membrane keyboard.... not even nostalgia is enough for me to want one again!

I spoke with the UCLA sociologist who has been sniffing around for early gamers. I shared this magazine with him, which gives a good idea of how deep a [crazy] person could go with the tech from those days.

But as for spending $25 on it? You're better off taking a friend out for burritos.

  13. I keep waffling on buying a Powermac G4 for $40 locally. I think it'll boot OS9. If I stay indecisive for a few more days I'm sure it'll disappear and make the decision for me.

    1. Flojomojo

      Flojomojo

Yeah, let it go, and if you really want it, virtualize it.

If I seem down on collecting classic Macs, it's only because I've been in that particular monkey house too long myself. They're nicer to look at than to own.

If you want to run SheepShaver (OS9 emulation) on a modern Mac, this looks like an easy way to get it going: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/macos9osx.html

It should work just as well in Windows or Linux, though.

Same here... have owned several classic Apple systems throughout the years and none of them held my attention for very long. If you have a specific use for something like this (ie: using as an iTunes jukebox for the basement or garage sound system), I'd say go for it - otherwise, yeah... I'd be skipping it too.

      BydoEmpire

I bought a Mac Classic II last year - my first B&W, 68k type of Mac. I enjoyed playing a few games on the real hardware because it's so unique. Ended up selling it for more than I paid, though, because I just didn't use it enough and I had a lot of compatibility problems with a lot of software. I didn't want to put in the time to futz with it or really collect. It *was* fun to own for a while and I'm glad I had some time with the real thing. I was also worried it'...
