  1. CSS for status updates needs an update. Let's admit it, this is how we already use it (self included.)
  2. I'm sure there's an excellent reason why replacement crisper drawers for refrigerators are so expensive.

same goes for parts for any of your other appliances.

They really don't want you repairing your appliance. They want you to buy a new one.

^-- yup. That said, I was very pleased that I was able to order the exact bracket I needed for my maytag dishwasher and fix it myself in 10 minutes. They actually had the part, it wasn't ridiculous, and it all worked. +1 to Maytag, I've had good luck compared to other appliance brands. YMMV.

  3. If the SP is backlit (model number on the back has 101 in it) keep it. Original GBA has an even worse screen than the old brick of an original GB, but the 101 screen can be transplanted into it with a bit of work to give you the best screen and best form factor in one.
  4. Quick rundown of the lighting mods available for Gameboys: Gameboy - backlight mod available. Gameboy Pocket - backlight mod available. Gameboy Light - no backlight mod needed. Gameboy Color - Frontlight and backlight mods available, backlight mod still clunky and hacky (I think you use an AGS-101 screen and have to cut up the case to make it fit.) Gameboy Advance - Frontlight and backlight mods available (backlight involves retrofitting AGS-101 GBA SP screen.) Very popular to mod because they're cheap, plentiful, and many people prefer its form factor over the SP. Gameboy Advance SP AGS-001 - the original frontlit version. Gameboy Advance SP AGS-101 - "brighter" version with backlit screen. Mainly used as source for screens for GBA mod. Gameboy Micro - totally cute and small but nobody mods them. Backlit but only plays GBA games. Nintendo DS: Some people literally cut these in half and turn them into a "Gameboy Macro." I'm not kidding. Basically a second way to get a backlit GBA with the horizontal form factor. (But it won't do original GB games so it's getting away from what we want...)
  5. You no longer need to gut an AGS-101 to get a screen for GBA backlight mods; AliExpress has begun selling compatible screens. But the price on *those* has gone up since I last checked, so I assume the AGS-101 has gone up as well.

Okay - other than the times it is not overrated, continuity is overrated. Star Trek. I'm talking about Star Trek.

  7. What makes M2's versions fantastic is that all the changes are done in a very tasteful way (I posted that on a status update) and can be disabled. They're not overhauling the game in some weird way.
  8. Family's asleep. Time to pull out the headphones, XMPlay, my MOD collection and pretend it's 1993 again.

Awesome! I still have my MOD collection, but I converted most of them to MP3s in the early 2000s. :) Enjoy!!!!

Conversion, schmonversion; most of the time the originals take up less space anyways, and all my Android phone needs is Droidsound-E. Look it up! >;)

  9. So that Tazo chai latte mix you can grab for just under three dollars at Walmart isn’t bad at all.

  10. Just ordered some pants from kmart.com. Hope it gets here before they go under.

  11. If I opt for a first gen PS3, how reliable are they? Is backwards compatibility something that can be restored via a modchip or other modification? Or did they completely strip out the required hardware?
  12. I'd like to pick up some PlayStation games that I missed, but I'm slightly confused as to all the intricacies of backwards compatibility between the generations. I know PS1 games will play on a PS2, so I don't need a PS1. PS2 games will play on certain PS3s - but those command a hefty price premium? PS4s will play PS1 games (from disk? do you have to repurchase them?) - will they play PS2 or PS3 titles? So at a minimum, I need a backwards compatibile PS3 and a PS4 to access the full library, but it may be more cost effective to get a PS2 and a non-compat PS3? Is my knowledge out of date? I have a Trinitron in the basement so I can hook up a PS2 there if need be, but I'd like the keep the number of systems to a minimum.
  13. I need to get a mounting kit for my HDTV that lets me do a full 90 degree rotation on the wall for releases like this.
  14. They offer a Sega Genesis classics collection. It wouldn't have the Master System/Arcade games on there, and it's just straight up emulation rather than the tastefully enhanced versions we're getting here. But there is a lot of overlap of games between the two. I wouldn't be surprised to see a compilation somewhere down the road though.
  15. Looks like Sega Ages Outrun has released on Switch. Looking forward to trying it tonight or tomorrow.

I keep hearing a lot of praise about the Sega Ages stuff but never really able to determine what makes them so great. Guess I'll have to fork over a few $$$ to try this and Phantasy Star

    3. deepthaw

      deepthaw

The praise is because they're very tastefully enhanced. Thunderforce IV has an option to disable slowdown (or at least slowdown the developers didn't design around), a "kid's mode" that makes it easier, sound tweaks (keep music from dropping out when audio samples play), etc. Phantasy Star has an automap added for dungeons among others. And all the extra features are optional and can be turned off.

The SEGA AGES version is the only way I'll ever put up with this game and complete it (as I have always wanted to).

Good explainer of the differences here:

@deepthaw "tastefully enhanced" is a nice way to say it.

  16. If professional baseball players can deal with some games having a designated hitter and some not, and every stadium being a different size with sometimes wildly different chances of hitting a homerun, why do professional Smash players have to turn off everything that makes the game interesting?

      deepthaw

It's weird. They've taken what was in essence a party game, exploited the systems to turn it into a maddeningly execution heavy fighter *and* as a community decided to turn off 75% of the features that make it interesting.

Thus why I'll never be a pro fighting game player, I just like jumping around and hitting things with other things. XD

    4. deepthaw

      deepthaw

I'll never be a pro fighting game player because I'm 40 and my reflexes aren't what they need to be. I'm squarely in that frustrating spot of "too good for my friends to enjoy playing me, but not good enough to play with the really skilled people."

My daughter loves it too. Which ones have you got? She just got the vehicle one, so we have them all now. She loves to build stuff, like Lego and this keeps her busy for hours.

  20. Oh, Dungeon Keeper 2. How I love you, but I don't love how you crash.

  21. Bought Interstate '76 for $1.99 off GOG. Do they even make games like this anymore? Seems it's all Cinematic Action or Medal of Call of Duty Honor: WWII Redux.

I built a racing cockpit with full "top of the line at the time" Force Feedback Wheel/pedal/shifter setup for sim racing, and Interstate '76 got more play time than any racing sim on the market. That game was a blast!

  23. When I was a kid playing Karateka on my 7800, I found out I could get my 7800 to make cool noises and screen garbling during the game by sticking a piece of metal in the expansion port. That eventually fried the sound on my 7800. It was still more fun than Karateka.
  24. I use an original Genesis controller and ordered a set of replacement membranes off of eBay. Couple with a good cleaning of the PCB, and it's just as I remember it. Unfortunately, I'm now remembering that I never really liked Genesis controllers. :\
  25. To clarify: Im playing pac-man on a console with 8-way sticks and approach an intersection from which down and right are both valid directions. I move the stick to down/right, what happens and why? Does it act differently if I move it from down or right to down/right?
