My personal favorite is FFV. The job system makes leveling up a lot more fun than any of the other games. I've never played Tactics, but I've heard it's similar. I'm partial to the older Final Fantasy's, as they don't have as many annoying cut scenes. Since the story hasn't significantly been changed since the 80's, I don't really want to see boring anime movies explaining to me what's happening. If I want that, I'll go watch the movie, which probably sucks harder than any of us can imagine. 1, 2, and 5 are my personal favorites. 9 was pretty fun, although really easy.

Thanks! Writing music for the 2600 is a bit interesting, and forces creativity down your throat, since you only have certain notes to work with and not all of them are in tune with each other. Kind of a fun challenge, though. I think I actually rewrote each tune about 6-8 times before my brother and I were satisfied. Glad you enjoyed it!

I know, except my main point of this thread was to see what other people thought of the old video game music. I know that as a general rule, the PS and DC are considered "classic," but I didn't want to include them in this thread (although I can't stop people from posting anything they want). On my original post I said pre-PS.

Yeah, sorry. I think FFI and FFII had the same battle music, but most of them had the same victory music. I guess that's OK...
Fianl Fantasy VIIFinal Fantasy X
True, but FFVII was for PS and FFX was for PS2. Classic, please. If we were considering the modern consoles, with their fancy-pantsy greater-than-16-bit graphics and sound, nobody would vote for the old stuff (except for me).

Castlevania definitely had good music. The first Final Fantasy had good music, but it got old really quick. And it really bothered me that they never really changed the battle music in any of the later FF's. It just got more orchestrated.
Super Metroid,Castlevania 4 and Link to the past were good too.I was not a big fan of Super Metroid's music. It seemed kind of boring or something, like it was missing something. Maybe I was missing something; it's been awhile. A Link to the Past had some good tunes, although many of them were old LoZ tunes orchestrated. But hey, there's nothing wrong with that.

I don't know if this music was in the original FFV, but the music from the Big Bridge is, in my opinion, the greatest song ever written. I don't have the original FFV, I have the FF Anthology or whatever for PS, so I'm not sure if that tune is on the original.

What's your favorite video game music? We're talking in-game music, not "soundtracks to crappy video game music." And let's not include sound effects, because then we all know Frogger and Arcade Pac-Man would win unanimously.

My personal favorites are Mega Man 2 and Crystalis for NES. I also liked the "Base" music in Contra. It had that nice groovy, almost pornographic quality to it that you just don't find in modern games.
Oh, and let's keep it classic, as in anything up to, but not including, the Playstation. So, like pre-1995, or whenever the PS came out.

Have you ever played Baseball Stars 2? I think it's exactly the same as Baseball Stars, but with a few extra features. Could be worth checking out if you liked Baseball Stars. And I second Base Wars and Super Spike V'Ball.

My brother bought a gameboy color for like $2 at a garage sale. It came with one game; I don't remember the name, but it was some kind of WWII game, where you blow up tanks and stuff. The resolution was kind of crappy, so I couldn't really see what was going on. Anyway, we noticed that a lot of the words were spelled wrong, and we thought it was just crappy programming. Then we finally realized the entire game was in German! Apparently, the mispelled words were not mispelled, just in German. Needless to say, we blamed our ignorance on the poor resolution. You dope, you pick the language at the beginning; German or English!

Are you serious?! Well, I only played it once. That game straight up sucked!

Found this while searching around the web today
. Come on, someone has it, fess up!
I wish I had this game. It looks sweet! Anything involving little kids and backward pants is hilarious. Throw in rap and you've got yourself a comedy routine. How could anyone NOT want to own that? It's like selling laughter!

That redonkulous Scottish accent in Warcraft II is easily one of the funniest things I've ever heard: "I lahk blowin' thengs op!"
Absolutely priceless.

Well, if you are going to use Andrew Krieg's NES list, why use an ancient version from 1998? His (much) more recent NES list can be found here, along with all of his other videogame lists:
Oh...
That was just the first one I found.

If you like metroid, check this site out:
It's a metal band playing all the songs from the first Metroid and Super Metroid. I thought they were pretty sweet. Brough back some memories.

I think the reason they're becoming so collectible/expensive is because they break so easily. Everyone gets the "flash screen" and they're ready to throw them away and find a new one that works. And also because there was something like 700 games released for the NES (I think, I know there was a lot), and less than 50% of them suck, which is more than what you can say for the newer systems. In my opinion.

If anybody's still interested, I finished this thing (I think):

That Mega Man X Battle and Chase game sounds sweet! It sounds like a cross between Mario Kart and that old NES game BaseWars, which also allowed you to power your players up with machine guns and stuff when you beat another team. That would definitely be pretty sweet to have all 6 MMX games on one disc.

I'm the one who created this thing, by the way. And just so there's no bad blood, I basically ripped off the idea from Kirk Israel, but I started it like two weeks ago, before he made all the changes. I originally only started making this because his playerPal responded slowly, and the layout was kind of confusing (in my opinion). However, now that he's upgraded substantially, it kind of neutered everything I set out to do. So now mine is more of an alternative to his...
It looks very promising. Is there any chance of him releasing a standalone Java application version which would allow you to load/save sprite data from/to files? That was actually my original intent when starting this project, but I kind of got bogged down. Since I know next to nothing about Atari 2600 programming, I was mainly just trying to make everything accurate. In response to your question, I originally had an option to load/save to separate files, but I took them out because 1) they were pissing me off, and 2) because you can just cut and paste your code whever you want, although that's a little inconvenient compared to clicking on a button and finding a file. I'll see if I can incorporate them back in, though.

And there's still a couple bugs in it. Most noticeably, when you try to change the color, it doesn't always change everything it should. And I need tweak the code input/output a little bit, too.
Thanks for the feedback!

Just the mere possibility of being able to play The Legend of Zelda without fear of the NES screwing up is enough to make me want to buy the Revolution.
And Revolution is a cool name.

I put a shark in three of the labels I turned in, but struggled with how subtle to make it. I can see it, but I'm just wondering if anyone else can?It took me a while, but I saw it. It's just the teeth, right?

I beat Contra losing just one life last year, when I lived in the college dorms. I beat a lot of games I had never beat before, like Mario 1,2,3 and Zelda II. I discovered that if you live in a college dorm, you have to play video games. And if you have Contra and you live in a college dorm, you have to beat it while your friends watch.

There's also the coin ship, which is almost impossible to figure out how to make it appear. It only appears on some worlds; I forget exactly which ones. For the unenlightened, here's how you do it: if you end a level with a multiple of 11 for your coins (i.e. 77), and you have that same multiple of 11 in the tens column of your points (i.e. 600870, because 77 divided by 11 is 7), then a ship will appear. It's a boring level with a bunch of coins. It's more of the kind of thing to just show your friends, though; not really very useful.
This was kind of off-topic, but it's just another cool secret of SMB3.
