My freshman year of college, my roommate and I had 6 systems hooked up in our dorm room. It was pretty awesome. We had: NES SNES Genesis N64 PS2 2600 Plug 'n' Play 2600 games We usually had a lot of people in our room. I think Goldeneye was the most popular, although we played SMB3 for about 3 months straight. Oh, those were days of hedonism...

If I recall correctly, there's three different types: a regular brick that can be broken with Mario's oversized head, a coin box, and a coin box that has already been hit (unbreakable). Of course, there's the 10-coin boxes, the vine boxes, the mushroom/flower boxes, and so on. But physically, there's only three (I think). And since the NES lagged like a whore whenever there was more than 4 moving things per screen, I can't imagine that you'd need more than three moving objects per screen/scan line. But I know little about 2600 programming. Hmmm, but then there's Bowser's hammers that he throws, and of course the Hammer Bros., so there might be as many as five moving objects on the screen at once, but the hammers don't stay very long. And for the 2600, it's probably not necessary to have more than two or three hammers throwing at a time; I think most of that was just for visual effect. I'm more concerned that the control will be more like Mario Bros. (for 2600) than Super Mario Bros. for NES. Mario Bros. was cool, but the control of the character was so unwieldy that it just wasn't very fun. The control for SMB on NES was bad enough compared to games later in the series that I don't really enjoy playing it that much anymore. However, it might be cool to not make a direct port of SMB, and to add little splashes of your own creativity to make it more interesting. Like, new enemies, new levels, time attacks (i.e. races), different bosses, etc. Just speculating...

Nolan Bushnell Interview in Wired Magazine
tmont replied to Albert's topic in Classic Console Discussion
8-player Pong? That's the sexiest thing I've ever heard. Edit: Okay, the announcement on the front page says it's 4-player, but the picture with the article shows 8 trackballs. Am I missing something? Is there 8 trackballs, but only 4 simultaneously? The article just says "multiplayer." -
That's one of my favorite Genesis games. I've never been able to find it for under $30, which is really annoying, since every other Genesis game is like $5.

Considering the only limit on it could be the designers imagination, I think you are very very wrong. It's the equivalent of saying every song or story has been written. Maybe you or I don't have the imagination to come up with something, it'd be shortsighted to think no one else can. 943341 I think I agree with joeybastard on this. That's kind of like saying every platform game is essentially the same. Mario is just a mustachioed, slightly chubby plumber they happen to slap on the front; it makes little difference to the actual gameplay if the game is called Super Slappy Mario and the Ten-Thousand Year-Old Franchise!!(or at least it shouldn't).

Dude, why are you such a dick? And as sad as it gets would be talking shit to somebody over the internet because he has a different opinion than you. Why the hell do you care if he likes one system over another? atarian1's response was just about the only valid answer I've read so far pertaining to my original question concerning someone's dislike of Nintendo. Granted, it might be a little narrow-minded to hold a grudge for 15 years concerning one game, but that's really no reason to be such an asshole. And for the record, I give a shit, because I'm the one who started the topic, and I'm the one who wants to know why some people have this "grudge" against Nintendo. If you want to flame, do it somewhere where you don't look like an idiot.

I have Mutant League Football, and I never liked it. For more hilarity, try Pigskin Footbrawl. Yeah, that's right: it's footBRAWL, homeslice. NBA Jam and Road Rash are the other two games that got me hooked on the Genesis.
-
Why? Is the game any good? It looks good, but so does Pam Anderson, and I doubt she's any good anymore.

I'd have to say Metroid or Kid Icarus. Super Mario Bros. would be cool, but I don't think the 2600 could do it justice. Kid Icarus is probably a better choice over Metroid because it's more linear; Metroid would be a big project: one that would probably be abandoned halfway through. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! could be sexy, too, however...

Wow, this is one angry topic. I only play classic games, because I'm a cheap bastard. And also because I like the old games better. I hate playing 3D games, because it takes me too long to get used to the controls, and it just pisses me off. That's why the newest console I own is a PS, and it was a gift.

Does this mean that you could control the sprite even though it's not visible? I haven't played a lot of 2600 games, so I'm don't know if there's a game out there that allows you to "hide." That's kind of cool, though. I'm assuming the playfield is opaque. You mean 12-note scale. There's 12 HALF steps in the conventional Western scale. You disappoint me. Improbable, not impossible. It just requires some imagination. Remember my idea for "Linus and Lucy?"

Interesting. I ask for reasons and I get more close-minded, unreasoned hatred. What is the freaking matter with Mario? Why don't you like him? You're telling me you don't like playing SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMW, etc. because of the main character? Why don't you just play with Luigi (you know what I mean, pervert)? I don't understand this bias against a franchise, as if the game designers insulted you. I think the fact that Nintendo is using Mario to sell crappy games, like Mario Tennis, is less than admirable, but that doesn't mean that MARIO is bad. It just means that Nintendo is trying to make money, which is a good thing, because they're a business, and if they didn't try to make money, we wouldn't be able to play as many video games. And that's bad.

As I've been reading the threads floating around here about the Revolution, it makes me wonder why people hate Nintendo so much. I know there's the "fanboys," whatever the hell that means, that supposedly only buy and play video games made by Nintendo, although I doubt that's actually true. I've also read about people who hate Nintendo because they're supposedly too adolescent, and they're only trying to appeal to the younger crowd, which I think is completely bogus. What's wrong with not being obscene? Do games really need to be realistic with blood and gore and sex and violence to be enjoyable? I really don't understand the reasoning behind disliking a video game company based on the fact that their games are not realistic, or that their games are too tame. Video Games shouldn't be realistic. That's why we like playing them. If video games were like real life, why would we want to play them? And then there's the Mario controversy. Apparently, because there's like a billion Mario games, suddenly Mario is uncool. I've read around here that people don't want to play Mario games, because there's been so many derivative works involving Mario. If the games are good, why not buy them? It just seems like people are biased against Nintendo based purely on some phantom insult: they don't like Nintendo because of this, this and this, so they won't buy their games. What is that? Who cares what the company's doing or saying as long they put out a decent game now and then? So, what's your beef with Nintendo?

I hope they start/continue making good games. With no loading times. That don't require a controller with 15 buttons. I still don't understand why they make games that are so hard to play and control that you have to practice them before they are any fun. What was wrong with Super Mario Bros.? That game required two buttons, and it's one of the greatest games ever created. And stop making video games talk. Those crazy voices freak me out (Mega Man).

You're crazy.

Ultima. I wouldn't consider it a must-buy unless I was a collector. I bought it for a couple dollars, and I'm pretty sure it has the most indecipherable graphics for an RPG I've ever seen. That and the fact that I couldn't figure what the heck I was supposed to do kind of made me never want to play it again. I guess Ultima Exodus (or whatever the sequel(s) were called) was pretty awesome, though. I can't remember if they're for NES, though. Hmmm... Now that I think more clearly about it, I'm not even sure if this would qualify as an RPG. It definitely looks like an RPG, but the battle sequences were much different than the regular turn-based battles that are so typical of other RPG's. If Crystalis qualifies, than Ultima definitely qualifies.

It wouldn't be a waste, my friend. I have the same problem sometimes, too: I get to the last boss and don't feel like failing for two weeks while I learn the loophole to easily defeat him, so I stop.

Strategy Games released on the PS1?

Is Oddworld considered a strategy game? -
Hmmm, that's possibly the lamest thing I've ever heard. Edit: Just noticed your edit. My pants are still dry. We appreciate it!

What does that piano on post #10 do? If you tell me you can create your own music for a NES game, I will wet my pants. Twice.

Yeah, the pure "legit" speedruns are more impressive to me, too. Especially since I did one a couple months ago (Super Mario Bros. 2, in 10:55, which, while impressive, has since been shattered). I think the TAS's in particular are fascinating to watch, especially the RPG's, what with all the luck manipulation, the frame-precision button-pressing: it's definitely time-consuming and a lot of work. I just don't understand why the speedrun community care that some people like playing with emulators. Nobody, outside from a few unsuccessful idiots, who alienate themselves from both groups, ever really tries to pass off a TAS as a legit speedrun.
-
In this context, when we're talking about speedruns, a time-attack (or TAS) refers to the "cheater" emulated runs using savestates and slowdowns. While it might not be historically and technically accurate, through common usage, that's what they're called now. Take a read through of the forums at SDA, and you'll see that this is what "time attack" now means (in these circles). If you tell someone at SDA that they're time attack is really good, they will probably swear at you and tell you it's a #$%ing speedrun. No it isn't, when you're in this context. It's why there are flame wars between the people at bisqwit's site and the people at SDA once every few months or so. It goes a bit deeper than that, but that's pretty much it. Basically, speedrun people think TAS people are spawns of Satan, and TAS people think speedrun people are too narrow minded. Not everyone on either side falls into these categories, though. It all started when Morimoto tried to pass his Super Mario Bros. 3 TAS off as a legitimate speedrun two years ago. There's been bad blood ever since. I also heard that someone tried to submit a 47 minute 100% TAS of Super Metroid to Twin Galaxies, but it obviously didn't make it past verification.

It is an attempt to beat a boss/stage/game in the fastest way possible. Attacking the timer, so to speak. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle. 919907 Actually, a time attack refers to a tool-assisted speedrun, hence TAS, which is a run of the game using an emulator with savesates and slow downs. A speedrun is a legitimate run of the game on a regular console. If you want to read about the differences between the two, and why the two communities hate each other for no apparent reason, go here.

Speed Demos Archive Video Game Ownage Both of these are speedrun sites, which means that all the videos are done on real consoles. In fact, both of the creators of each of these websites hate TAS's with a passion.

Why no updated versions of Zelda 1 and 2?
tmont replied to rockman_x_2002's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I hope they leave the original as it is, and don't try to turn it into something it's not.
