the official Channel F thread!
Mikebloke replied to atari2600land's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Alright which ten of you bidded more than $100 for something worth about $50. I think we can officially confirm that the channel F scene has gone silly. -
Finished Frostpunk (PC) last night, as the last dlc came out. I will probably achievement hunt for the last ones I need, after I get the last two for Gemcraft Frostborn Wrath (PC) which I technically finished ages ago but just need to finish the trial levels.

For me it's a case of "is it cheaper than used" because very very very occasionally it is when it's something either they didn't realise the value of or want it gone fast. I agree with Austin that accessories and controllers might have some additional reasons to factor in. Sometimes it's just nice to know you are the only person who has used that controller. I found dried snot on one many years ago, so yeah. Edit: while not classic gaming as such, sometimes high Street second hand prices is silly as well, Making buying brand new cheaper. The mini Neo Geo thing used to be £30 cheaper buying from amazon than buying it second hand on the high Street. The difference between buying a new console boxed than buying one second hand is also sometimes so slight it would pay to just buy brand new or take advantage of game bundle deals.

The CDi Zelda games, with a decent CDi controller they just become regular platformers, and aren't that bad. Fellow Bayou Billy fan, I didn't think I was going to like it when I bought it, but it turned out OK. Reminded me a bit of The Ninja on master system.

Could you link the marketplace thread when you make it to the channel F thread? I'm going to jump on the opportunity to order one. -
What makes a system "Retro" - open discussion
Mikebloke replied to c0op3r's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The PC-50x range is very similar to the Telstar Arcade setup, so its interesting that even in 1st generation machines (as is labelled in mass media) there was very different methods of using hardware. 1st generation was essentially the development of "console-ising" arcades to save space and increase versatility, and then in 2nd gen we get ROM. It would be cool as novelty items if their parent companies were ever mad to go back into the games industry - but any RasberryPi system could handle it. We're starting to see FPGA's getting cheaper smaller and better which is allowing the ability to clone multiple systems in one. For Sega and Nintendo, its more a copyright issue, but it would be interesting if it was commercially viable to release dated systems in the future. -

Now would be the time to sell, I'd say sell the lot in one ebay sale, otherwise you might get stuck with some of the commons. With a system or two with it, it's a great starter set for anyone. The way the prices are currently going you might get anything up to $1,000 for it. Do bids, maybe a reserve of a few hundred dollars. It'll get there. Unfortunately the only one I really need is the democart, and someone on ebay will pay more than I will. Out of curiosity, do you know if your wife's grandmother worked for the channel F section of fairchild? If she did what was her job role? Would be curious if she was part of the systems development or sales! Also checkers with manual no box went for a thousand dollars cry. -

I did ask if they could ship to UK but it seems like it's too complicated a process after bids have started. I could still bid on it and they could technically send it, but I just end up with higher import fees. Maybe the next one will be cheaper. -
Streaming RF without a VCR displaying in RGB
Mikebloke replied to tripletopper's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'll say what my experience is, I got a USB tuner a few years ago, it sounds like it operates very closely to your device. All formats of signal appear to be standard, I can do NTSC (both American and Japanese), PAL, SECAM and a few more. This seems to be standard to ensure universal ability which naturally makes it easier to sell. You should be able to insert any type of RF video device into it, or buy an adaptor to convert it. I've even wound some copper wiring into a point and inserted it into a port and its worked fine (although not the best idea!) so it should work no matter what you throw at it. I find however, so much of the software is based on automatic tuning, I can edit entries to fine tune the channel in the software but you often can't make new ones yourself, which is frustrating when you know exactly what frequency to use. automatic tuning on these devices (and tvs generally) often simply replace rather than add to existing channels, so if I'm trying to find a new signal, I often have to sacrifice the ones I'd hard earned to scan already. None of these devices work perfectly, none of these devices I could recommend fully, none of these devices work reliably every time. The converting and recording of RF remains a total pain in the butt. -
Is THIS the Videopac /Odyssey 2 picture of death?
Mikebloke replied to Mister-VCS's topic in Odyssey 2 / Videopac
This is the display shown when a cartridge hasn't been read/not inserted but the console is on (for the G7000, this is what happens when you plug it into the mains as there is no on/off switch!) Have you tried different cartridges / blowing / cleaning contacts? Seems like the console is working, you just need it to make a connection. -

Best Nintendo System(s) (In Your Opinion)
Mikebloke replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I kicked a hornets nest in the Ataribox thread about nintendo consoles lol. But as I said there, I usually have at least two consoles out from nintendo and also usually used the most too. The things I hate about nintendo is also the things that make it a good company commercially wise, and also why a lot of my favourite games are exclusive on their consoles. Snes is a powerhouse for its era, and I really like the mega drive, so that was my first option. Commercial failures Gamecube and Wii U are my other favourites. I just really like them. My reasons for gamecube probably isn't any different from the mainstream - really good controller. Great for Multiplayer action, easy to move, gba player and an excellent selection of first and second party games. I still consider it weak compared to xbox and ps2 but I still have a number of titles I enjoy playing. Wii U... I can't explain why I like it to be honest. I like the controller, though it still could have used more use and also more options to not use it... It feels like a smaller library I have some hope of completing too so for a modern console to me it's fairly collectable. With wii capability too though, wii u and gamecube secures almost all of my current Nintendo needs, and if the snes is out too, that's a good portion of Nintendo library right there. -
Whoops I started something off with my Nintendo baiting, but it does feel like we're all playing different Nintendo consoles. Anyway... My point was more the fact that there is a market for weaker consoles but marketing and exclusivity is everything. Nintendo has survived with this sense of 1st and 2nd party (eg: old Rare titles, Nintendo exclusive companies) exclusive titles and ease of movement, something they have been trying to push since Gamecube to merge its very successful handheld business which they had a virtual monopoly to even after Sony joined it, into the living room. Atari in comparison has none of these things, Amico whatever the strength of its games, does. Its merely a reliteration of the point that anything I can play on the ataribox, I can play elsewhere now anyway. If the "netflix mum" element is also being removed, my PS3 still serves a better purpose as a multi-media device because it can still run Netflix and Amazon Video. Edit: Just want to say, I usually have at least two of the following out: SNES, Gamecube or Wii U which is my fav nintendo consoles out on the TV, this is because exclusive titles is FUN to play, regardless of how the games match up compared to the competition. I'm never going to be wowed by the graphics of a Nintendo company, but that doesn't mean they don't have good games.

sorry I meant before Skies of Arcadia, and you know, released worldwide.

Pretty much every "did you know" post Atari Twit has done is wrong, but nostalgia hit init.

Actually, the intellivision delay makes it easier to believe the atari delay using the same reason. We actually try to avoid mentioning the amico here because it has its own threads. The problem is amicos entire promotional and branding strategy is to mock the Ataribox's own incapabilities to make itself look good, so it's hard not to mention it when atari 2014 continues to make constant failings. Lots of projects now seem to be effected by an afterwave of Covid, analogue pocket seems to have also been effected by limiting numbers. But here is the thing, these projects aren't effected because Chinese workers can't get to work, it's because raw resource production in Chinese client states has drawn down to a hault. You can also believe that Sony and Microsoft has made sure to monopolise as much production ready for their own releases, amico and ataribox was never going to get priority. The other thing is the Ataribox blamed covid, but their production area was a) not in an area effected by lockdown b) before world production of raw materials ground to a hault c) was not effected by any other product getting priority and d) was made by one or two workers who were able to work safely at a distance from the videos they released themselves anyway. And finally e) was not reliant on new parts being made, so everything could be shipped to manufacturing. There was nothing in the Ataribox situation where covid actually effected it, other than atari stopping it. Even I was able to get PCB boards built.

Also consider that GBA has a smaller resolution and not so good sound chips than the snes. It seems like it would be a nice easy conversion as so many SNES games did get ported to GBA, and perhaps from a coding point of view there might be some level of ease moving one to the other, but its the redesign of interfaces that might catch you. Platformers generally handle this better but expect a harder job if you wanted something like... Sim City.

Nice, all the 7800 carts I'm missing! Unfortunately not prepared to pay that much though 😢

Still difficult to tell if this market increase (if you think 2600 is bad, look at the NES scene) is because rich people are idiotic enough to think there is richer people than them willing to buy it, or whether rich people are genuinely buying them to leave sealed on a shelf to do nothing. Either way, its bad for gamers. I don't keep anything sealed, but hindsight is always wonderful to have.

the official Channel F thread!

Yes I had a go before with that, but because I still haven't done anything particularly useful for the Channel F yet I haven't had a chance to take advantage of it! -
the official Channel F thread!
Mikebloke replied to atari2600land's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I hope 8bitworkshop dot com does a Channel F option at some stage, they seem to be starting to cover more and more devices, consoles and computers (5200 has a beta version among with a few others using MAME to run it, so perhaps some hope for Channel F too?) For now though, they have also done a image converter for a number of devices, including the channel F: https://8bitworkshop.com/dithertron/ Its not perfect as it doesn't account for black and the 'grey' colour. Some of the other devices you can load the data straight into usable code, so you never know... sometime in the future might happen for Channel F too. -
Magnavox Odyssey Multicard - call for orders!
Mikebloke replied to Mikebloke's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hi everyone, just a quick update that I'm having to raise the price slightly for US tracked delivery. This is because currency conversions is less favourable than last month, and its now got to the point where it eats not only into the shipping cost, but also the difference that I make on each unit. I'm selling these as cheap as I can without being silly about breaking even - but does mean it is potentially easily effected by significant currency changes. This is hopefully the only time I have to worry about this. For 1 unit, I'm keeping untracked delivery at $5 ($30 total), but I've increased tracked delivery from $12.50 to $14 (total: $39). I hope this is reasonable for everyone. For 2 units, the price is now $15 for shipping (this little extra is basically to insure the cost of the items in the event of loss), totalling $65 for 2 cards with tracking. For now, prices shipping to the rest of the world remains the same. Thanks. Edit: I've just PM'ed everyone who has reserved this but not yet paid, no rush to commit to pay - just let me know if you'd like to 'sit' on it and I'll keep them reserved. They are being stored in a safe place until people are ready to pay. Thanks everyone. -
How do you store Sega Game Gear games?
Mikebloke replied to EdgeOfPortal's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I stack them on top of each other and it looks awful but its all I can do. I think I have about 12 of the clear plastic cases and no actual boxes for any of the games (but I do have the box for the game gear itself!) I find the lack of boxes generally for handhelds makes any nice form of display hard, but I guess some bespoke plastic stand might work. Unfortunately I stick the game gear games in the same section of my countless Nintendo handheld games, one day they will get some better pride of place but until I can make up the space that is what they got.
