the official Channel F thread!

Importing to the UK would cost me an additional $1,100 according to eBay. -
Wow! Lots of interesting information there thanks for sharing. I'm mostly working and playing games rather than making them at the moment, but always have time for pong XD

Anyway to tell what region a game is in by looking at cartridge/box?
Mikebloke replied to kain11th's topic in Atari 7800
Doesn't some boxes have different back text? My food fight claims to only work on ntsc tvs (it works just fine), so I'm sure there is some variation. The other noticeable difference is if there is foreign instructions! A lot of the time these are slapped on the back of the case and shrink wrapped outside the box instead of in it. Got a few like this, these should be all pal. -
Nobody is randomly searched at customs or immigration, just saying.

Favorite Donkey Kong Country game
Mikebloke replied to Thunderbird98's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I think DKC1 was a standout title for the Snes, looking back at some of the advertisement it was obviously used to fight back against ps1 and saturn and the other competitors without people buying a new machine. I think DKC2 had some of the same magic, and is an enjoyable game in its own right. 3 though, I've tried to play a few times and I just can't get into it. -

I offered $200, which was a good price when prices was sensible for a loose copy, but it was instantly rejected. Maybe we are now seeing the end of silly fairchild prices. -

Is it coming up in colour or just black and white/grey? Also have you tried something like a VCR and tried to tune it through that instead? My other guess is it might be using a different encoding signal to your TV. My TV can take SECAM for example but my VCR which in the past I used for recording didn't, and just "jumped" over on the scanning like you described. If you have a USB TV tuner around you could give that a go too and see if it locks onto a signal, they scan the entire range rather than cherrypicking like tvs do. If that doesn't work, looks like you are going inside the box, good luck! -

My midnight mutants does still have a p sticker on it, so it looks like pal carts did start with them, but as people say it may have come off. However, because most games work just fine in pal with ntsc carts (or good enough), a lot of us buy ntsc carts when we struggle to find pal ones, so there is ntsc carts in the wild here in Europe. -

MINE-MINE-MINE!! Look what I got off eBay ;)
Mikebloke replied to ColleenLover's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Yes authentication bodies for video games is frustrating.wata are known for falsification of quality as well. You don't see any antiques being sold at auction being incased in plastic shells, so why should we do it for video games. Yes, a lot of this stuff will deteriorate eventually, but encasing it means you have to break it open to get a second opinion. No other valuing service runs on the idea of preventing a second valuing service from doing their job. Whole thing is a con. -
Pictures is fine if we can read the titles of games + accessories.

I wish my house was large and tidy enough to have such a clean setup as this!

Also no company ever has purposely withheld production or stock in stores in the hopes that they'll sell more later. There has been early releases of consoles that caused supply and demand issues such as sega with the Saturn release in the US, but that is a different kind of mistake. I haven't been looking for new consoles tbh, but I'll probably still go for a ps4 or xbox one first.

In terms of Russian models being in 92/93, it's quite possible as we would have had fall of the soviet Union. One of the biggest elements of that in relation to video games was that of copyright and licencing, which in itself led to companies selling products competitively for profit, its not unbelievable that old tech would have been picked up to make a quick profit for something people may not have seen yet in their neck of the woods.

I did buy the multicart from Packrat which is very good but not an sd card one, I might ask about that one as well. To answer the original question, generally the later the number the better the game from the European numbering system. There is only really 3 games that doesn't run on a g7000/odyssey2, and they are super expensive anyway. If you do get hold of a multicart or sd device, try air battle (not to be confused with the combat clone air-sea battle), turtles, neutron star and looney balloon which might have all been European exclusives. A lot of the earlier games is Multiplayer so just be mindful of that if you generally play alone. A number of games however can be played single player.

I think this is the thing. You can encourage software developers on the cheap, but you still need to support them. If they had a development package, regular contact and a real storefront to show off on their devices to download from, then there'll be plenty of bedroom developers building the next big indie title for it, and they'd have the opportunity to show it off. We currently know of two games, Jani's that you can buy on other devices right now, and the SNK legal rip name game that seems nearly finished anyway but is also going to release on steam. The nearest competing company doing very similar things already have a raft of games on show...

Haha, its not as bad as that image makes out. Jani is possibly the most reasonable person talking about the device. While I still doubt the use and point of the Ataribox, I can see Jani has enthusiasm for developing the device. His video also shows the classic controller and it does light up directionally, so they did keep that feature. I asked about the configuration of the lights and Jani replied in comments there does seem to be some documentation. I know some people mock the use of a lit up controller but as someone who has a customised keyboard for games I do find it useful and I am able to look at input devices while playing a game. If Terraria can have a dynamic keyboard lighting setup then surely the classic controller can have a use if it is configurable. Jani is possibly on the fan boy side for the vcs, but given possibly seems to be the most high profile developer for it so far (and it isn't the only device the games is developed for - so eggs aren't all in one basket) it's provided more insight than anyone else has into the system. Jani shows the system working, and the two controllers in the two videos so it's something we've never really got before. The device works, if nothing else.

Magnavox Odyssey Multicard - call for orders!
Mikebloke replied to Mikebloke's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hi Graeme, I have 15 available, ready and waiting to send out. If you are just after the one, follow the instructions in the first page regarding payment based on location. If you would like more than one, give me a pm with your country of residence and I'll quote you a price (it's usually more effected by value and having that covered by royal mail than the weight!). I usually ship within 48 hours and if its going outside the UK its usually arrived at customs on my side within a day.- 90 replies

I bought one of these recently, actually my first device from retro HQ, I know it's the only SNK device James does, but I will be snapping up the others in time! The pocket has an awesome library, like a nicer gbc. Most of the games did get released here in Europe but some can be a bit pricey especially with the European boxing. This helps alleviate that price+rarity issue. If you don't have a pocket yet, try it out. They even have the clicky controls!

Awesome Guy Hooked Me Up With This Odyssey To Me Tonight
Mikebloke replied to widowsson's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hi there, if your hurting for the other cards, a user here called Boojackascha produced some 'multicard' designs, he helped me get a big bundle produced as well, and I'm selling them as people have interest. I am UK based so shipping might take awhile, but some people tell me they received it within 5-7 days. All the units are produced, so I send them out usually within 48 hours of payment. Its a nice set and I'd have bought that set even without the cards in a snap, unfortunately few are available this side of the pond, and many the other side are reluctant to send abroad. I also can't afford it XD. Thankfully though the multicards are cheap, so if you are interested check it out. https://atariage.com/forums/topic/306480-magnavox-odyssey-multicard-call-for-orders/ -
My butt clenches every time I see new posts in this thread but it's either people messaging because they didn't read the thread, or people memeing the fact that other people haven't read the thread. We shall all get a chance to buy one when the site to buy them is up, we can all fight to the death for one when the time comes.
