  1. Well, you technically added another hidden paddle game, making it 43, so why not, was this also a time issue or would that have cost more, what?

    :)

Because an Atari Flashback 2+ with 50 games could've sounded so much better!

More could've, but the games were kept at 40, so the sports games were just to replace some of the games pulled out of the console.

So a new Menu section - Sports Arena has been added, Double Dunk, RS Boxing, RS Soccer, Super Baseball and Super Football have been added.

    Hey Curt,

Just curious, how come even more Atari owned sports games couldn't have been added?

    Bowling

    Golf

    Realsports Tennis

    Realsports Volleyball

    Thanks again,

  2. My question: Atari Climber was removed ... for LEGAL REASONS? Atari Climber was a renaming of Debro's game Climber 5. Care to explain the legal reasons?

Which was not Debro's game. He ported it from a game that appeared in Compute! magazine. There were licensing issues with the Compute! owners. This is one of the prime reasons I keep warning authors and others on here about not working with properties you don't own, or getting permission first. It always come back to bite you. In this case, it also bit us.

    Hence, no Atari Climber.

According to this guy, Compute! is now public domain, unless he is wrong or something has changed since March of 2008.

History on the COMPUTE! Gazette Series of Magazines: Compute Publications Formed on 1/8/1979

COMPUTE! Magazine, in May 1988 changed its focus to PC's and their clones. In the early 1990's COMPUTE! was sold to General Media. Ziff Davis bought COMPUTE!'s assets in 1994 and General Media had stopped publications before the sale. Compute!'s Gazette Magazine ceased publication entirely after 1995. Compute Publications International, Ltd. was administratively dissolved and suspended, and in March 2008, Ziff Davis Media, Inc. announced it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and subsequently dissolved. All contents of the COMPUTE! Gazette series have fallen into Public Domain.

  3. Yup, now that its up, we can now admit to that. Actually that was how we were originally approached, to do a very small run of consoles as give aways and then it grew into Target and from what I've heard, possibly Walmart now wanting them too, so keep your eyes open as I'm sure more previous retailers will want to jump back into carrying these again as they sold so well and so fast the first time.

    Curt

Just so people know, it's also being given away as part of the Atari related prizes through General Mills cereals -

    http://generalmills.promo.eprize.com/retrogamegiveaway/

    Thanks for everything Curt!

So who will get them first Atari.com or Target?

  4. It looks, to my understanding, exactly like the original FB2, and this time around it has Double Dunk, Realsports Boxing, Realsports Soccer, Super Baseball and Super Football. The two Activision games are no longer there and neither are Cavern of Mars and Atari Climber. Other than that its the exact same product as the FB2... except now you can order it and it comes with a Free T-shirt.

I'd think a cart port could be added to this as well. I imagine Curt can talk to us now and tell us more :) .

Wizard is also gone, wonder why, it was an Atari prototype, so no licensing issues would be apparent!

    :?

    Rick

  5. The pictures used on the site are wrong, it looks the same except for the logos which are now the new "old" Atari logos.

And yes, the Activision and several other games that had licensing issues have been replaced with sports games. I did the full box and pack-in manual this time around (as opposed to last time where we had to play the "keep the revision straight" game with the graphic arts company they insisted on using).

The board should be the same as the Rev. C's.

Sounds awesome, I will preorder one, just have three questions though...

So those graphics problems with Yars' Revenge and Lunar Lander are now the fixed ones?

Which version of Millipede is it?

Hidden "1972" Paddle games still there?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rick Vendl II

  6. Well, Super baseball and Super Football are just the same as there RealSports counterparts, so two of those games above can be crossed off the list.

While you are correct regarding Super Baseball, you're dead wrong about Super Football, it has 3-D graphics and an important transitional game for its time, Realsports Football is only 2D, thus inferior!

    Rick

  7. I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of someone who hasn't played Atari since the 80s. If I were walking down the toy aisle and I saw this product with games I knew and loved on it then turned the package over and saw all of these other great looking titles that never existed before 2001 I would be like "Where did these come from? Holy crap that looks cool!" and would most likely buy it. This is in contrast to the alternative: seeing a product that has games that I've already played on the FB2 or (worse) seeing the list at the top of this topic.

Renewing interest *and* memories should be what a flashback is about.

Believe it or not, certain sport titles and some others from the list are among what popular culture remembers.

Intellivision didn't have any trouble selling their 10 unit with "poor sports games".

I have absolutely no interest to buy another Atari ROM chip system that includes games I already got on previous Flashbacks like what Jakk's Pacific does for its Namco TV Games line.

    3D Tic-Tac-Toe (Flashback 2)

    Adventure (Flashback 1 & 2)

    Air-Sea Battle (Flashback)

    Asteroids (Flashback 2)

    Battlezone (Flashback 1 & 2)

    Breakout (Flashback 1)

    Canyon Bomber (Flashback)

    Centipede (Flashback 2)

    Combat (Flashback 2)

    Crystal Castles (Flashback)

    Dodge 'Em (Flashback 2)

    Gravitar (Flashback)

    Hangman (Flashback 2)

    Haunted House (Flashback 1 & 2)

    Human Cannonball (Flashback 2)

    Maze Craze (Flashback 2)

    Millipede (Flashback 1 & 2)

    Missile Command (Flashback 2)

    Off the Wall (Flashback 2)

    Outlaw (Flashback 2)

    Quadrun (Flashback 2)

Radar Lock (Flashback 2, listed in my original message by mistake)

    Sky Diver (Flashback)

    Saboteur (Flashback 1 & 2)

    Secret Quest (Flashback 2)

    Solaris (Flashback)

    Space War (Flashback 2)

    Sprintmaster (Flashback)

    Warlords (Flashback 1 & 2)

    Yars' Revenge (Flashback 1 & 2)

    IF AKA NDA, right Curt?

  9. So you're saying that the Jakks Adventure is better then the FB1 Adventure??? Playing Circus Atari with a joystick is better then a paddle?

Many of the games on the FB1 have some sound and gameplay issues, but considering the 20 games were done in under 10 weeks while Jakks took 9 months through DC Studio's to make there and that the Jakks adventure there is a purple dragon instead, the dragons sometimes don't even die and that the secret room says "text here" instead of the Warren Robinette credit. Sorry, but I just don't get your decision.

    Curt

After playing it I decided against making an offer. The port of Adventure was too terrible and the game selection was pretty bad. Not happy about the joysticks either. Id rather have the JAX plug-In with Circus.

Maybe he means the jakks paddle version. It has circus atari (and arcade warlords) and is, IMO, the best of the Jakks games.

Could be, then, in addition to the Atari Paddle other great Jakk's Pacific TV Games are Namco Ms. Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Retro Arcade Pac-Man, Activision and The Price Is Right!

    Rick

  10. the-topdog, I was disappointed with Majesco's Konami TV Arcade unit. While better than the simultaneously released Frogger-only unit (same price, more games, after all; I still think it must have been some licensing requirement that resulted in a single-game unit alongside a multi-game unit that included that game), it contained the NES ports of 3 of the games, along with newly coded NES ports of the other 3 games. The system was, obviously, a NOAC. I had been expecting the arcade games, not the significantly different NES versions, so that, combined with the cheap (and ugly!) build of the hardware, led me to return what I had thought would be a definite keeper. It's also false advertising that the back of the box shows screen shots from the arcade versions.

    My sentiments exactly!

By the way, "DTV" was only from the Commodore 64 plug-n-play unit.

Indeed, that is a good one, the Commodore 64 on a chip similar to what Curt's Flashback 2 did with an Atari 2600 chipset.

    Signed,

    Rick

  11. So it sounds like it's going to be a Jakk's Pacific release then like the Paddles that Curt worked on?

No, never said that. Again, can't give out any details other than not to take the fact there's no announcement on Atari's site yet at face value.

Thanks for your responses, I understand and look forward to a Flashback 2 Plus in 2010 by whomever releases it!

    Rick

  12. And once again the newbie ass-wipe farts out more convoluted crap:

I think the whole FB3 thing is a farce. A pipedream that is never coming to pass. Atari/Infogrames has zero interest in hardware,

LOL, riiiight. That's why they did the Jakk's sticks (including the current new version), the paddles, the keychain plug and plays, the FB1, the FB2, and the previously mentioned 2+.....

    There is a new version?!

I have seen one and it's just the original 10 games by DC Studios in Jakk's new clear package with a white plastic handle.

Also, Atari has yet to announce any release date for Flashback 2 plus.

I saw this box at Target today, one big difference from that blister pack version is there's now a big easily scratchable sticker around its actual joystick flat top instead of the premolded on artwork and printing with only one small Pac-Man label!

    Rick

and if I remember correctly, the texture of the plastic at the top of the base is different, but other than that, they look the same.

This is what I meant, that's not different texture, look very closely, there's a huge crappy black sticker now!

At a Target store, as well, I have seen the new trapezoid cross section box with handle on top for the Namco 5 TV Game (which came out last holiday season, so it's just a new package for an existing product). I never did like the previous blister-pack TV Games packaging, so I think this is a good change, though still not as good as the cardboard boxes they used to use.

I agree that these new boxes are way better than those nasty blister packs, also see my other reply right before this one and "The Price is Right" with Drew Carey as host is one of their 2009 TV Games.

    Rick

Thanks for the heads-up on the The Price Is Right TV Game. I haven't seen it at any of the Targets or Wal-Marts in my area (they don't have any of Jakks' new TV Games aside from that single Namco 5 in the new box at one Target). Would you be able to tell me who the developer is? If you have it yourself, you can look at the logos at the boot screens, or if you don't have it, I'd appreciate it if you would look at the back or bottom of the package next time you see it in a store. I track the developer info in my plug-n-play listing file.

  15. Commodore?

If it is then I hope they ditch microsoft. I remember firing up my old 128, and seeing "Copyright Microsoft" on the screen. It meant nothing then, but now.... I wanted to cry. At least the 64 mode was untainted (and that's where all the games resided)

    Well?

Biggest part is, it has NOTHING to do with Atari, it does however have to do with a video game company that was started back in the early 1980's and is making a comeback is a HUGE way.

    Stay tuned...

    Curt

Maybe an EA games, that way M.U.L.E. could be on there, mini C=64 replica, which was my all-time favorite right next to Atari!

Another guess, a miniaturized Intellivision 25-in-1?

    Rick

  16. The biggest turn off for me with these things, is the fact they keep using and re-using the same games over and over again. For example take Pac-Man. It's sad to think that Jak's spends money to see how many different sticks they can make with Pac-Man on them. There's literally hundreds of games out there that they can market, yet there's got to be at least a half dozen sticks with some form of Pac-Man on them! :x

This is true. You end up with overlapping titles among several tv games units. Ugh. The Nintendo pirates sometimes have better game variety, but still with bad games in their consoles. :)

Jakks did announce their license of the Williams and post-1984 Atari arcade games from Midway, but underutilized it by only producing an individual controller for Mortal Kombat, Gamestop even had its own Williams TV Games (Sinistar, Defender, etc) preorder link put up, but then, just like that, was taken down, what a waste :(

    JAKKS Pacific Secures

  17. I have the Super Pac-Man joystick and while its better, its not exactly the truest version. None of the tried and true Pacman patterns works on this version. Though the 'ol hiding place under the the T works. The black gamekey (from what I remember reading sometime in the past on some post I no longer can find) supposedly does do the ol' Pacman patterns. The gamekey DigDug version is definitely more accurate... though that means that the screen ends up scrolling because the original is more rectangular (height-wise) than ones normal TV.

Does the DigDug on the PacMan Gold do this?

Yes and Galaxian is finally more accurate on Pac-Man Arcade Gold as well!

  18. In any case, I'm currently looking for the Ms Pacman w/ 2 gamekeys... I actually have the one with the single DigDug gamekey... but would like the black key since its suppose to have the truest PacMan conversion.

Anybody know where I could find a Ms Pacman black key w/ Pacman on it?

That was a Wal-Mart exclusive, however, Jakk's Super Pac-Man and Pac-Man Arcade Gold joysticks, both in stores now, also include the same version you are looking for.

  19. Does anybody have a Jakks Ms. Pac-man with two game keys?? Specifically, does anyone have and willing to part with (for a price of course) with the black game key (which has the original Pacman) on it. I have a Ms. Pac-man thats gamekey compatible and I have the orange gamekey with DigDug on it... but not the black one. And I hear the black one is the only Pacman version in Jakks lineup that is true to the arcade version of Pacman. Can anybody help me? gmail me at lasloo. thanks.

Not true, the Jakk's Super Pac-Man and Pac-Man Arcade Gold joysticks also include that version.
