Yes, which is why we use Mame 2003 on RPi, for example, and which was my earlier point, about why it makes sense to use some earlier builds on weaker machines.

Same here, but how often people do first setups?

MAME takes few seconds to launch. This is #firstworldproblems territory, seeing as then you have aaccess to the entire history of arcade gaming (and more if you wish).

Granted, not everything is going to run at 60fps with 100% CPU speed - but that applies to pretty much any hardware running the emulator.
It does actually, because devices like Pi are extremely popular and the older versions really make a difference performance-wise on them. Besides, newer versions of MAME do not update everything across the board, so most games will perform exactly the same.

If only...the amount of juvenile behaviour I've seen on retro forums does not match COD multiplayer chat levels perhaps, but it's still quite amusing
Regarding the term retro here's an interesting discussion: apparently that term does not mean what we think ...
QuoteThe other day we had a couple of friends over for dinner, and our C64 and Amstrad were still set up from previous weekend's retrogaming.
So I of course say to them: "Those are our retro computers", which spawned a longer debate.
"But those aren't retro" the guy says.
"Err.. what?", I replied.
"Retro is when you create something new that revives or relates to a style in the past. Those computers there are originals, not retro", he explained while pointing to the C64 and Amstrad CPC.
After some discussion we googled for the definition, and it would seem that he is indeed right. All definitions we could find seems to confirm what he says.
We of course tried to argue that: "Ok, but can't something that looks retro look retro because it actually IS old?", but he didn't budge.
"No, it's still not retro. If anything, it's classic" he insisted.
Made me think of @ukmarkh who apparently then seems to be the only one with a correct YouTube channel name: "Classic Gaming".
In other words.... the new C64 mini is actually retro then, because it's a new thing with a retro design. It is reviving the C64 - ergo retro. But the original C64 is not retro. It is original. Can be called classic. -
It looks amazing, it's how all the retro remakes should be made. The perfect blend of the old CRT-style with the new effects and gameplay.
Only problem is, compared to this game everything else on Amico (with maybe exception of Night Stalker) looks pedestrian.

In context of the era, the best gfx of the time were deservedly jaw-dropping, because they were ahead of everything else. I'm quite certain that in 2051 some people will be having a chat about how awful-looking games from 2021 were, compared to their neural-link better-than-photorealistic ones.

Heh. The only reason I actually started messing with Redream is because it's possible to use CRT shaders via Reshade.
I forgot about MSR, fabulous game, spent a lot of time with it back then. And yeah, Tokyo Extreme Racer, introduced me to the Shutokou style, love it to bits. Need to get on them again...
I only use Dualshock4, no fancy wheels. Will try to tweak the settings and give Daytona another go.
Anybody knows how is the lag in Redream? Saturn emus are supposed to be quite laggy...

If Capcom did The Shining, it could be interesting...

Is Daytona USA a good game?
I don't usually ask this kind of questions and pass my own judgement, but this is an odd one. I like arcade racers a lot, but I'm not particularly good at them. I've just got Redream working recently and played Daytona for the first time ever. I remember that back in the day it was getting rave reviews, but I also seem to recall reading some negative opinions about it from modern gamers. I thought that it's very slick, but also that steering is somewhat clunky. So, is it just me, or is there something to it?

The "boutique system" claim would make sense if it was a VCS exclusive, and/or VCS was actually a unique system when it comes to the hardware. As it is, VCS is really a mini-PC, and you can play this game as f2p on iOS, plus he changed the name to URG and released it on Steam too (costs less: ~20 USD, but it's still silly for this kind of game

I was looking at some old computer yesterday on UK's ebay, the price was 200 GBP, and the "import charges" to Europe another 50 GBP. It's ridiculous. I'm glad I got most of what I wanted before covid and this new tax BS.

I do agree, to some extent. The early ones had plenty of limitations and hardware requirements. In fact, I still use Total Commander for the vast majority of my Windows operations.
But I do see how it could be alluring for most of the "casual" users, and of course indispensable for certain type of programs.

I've tried a bunch of the slow down programs when I got that P4 (2.4Ghz) recently, Mo'slo included, but I can't say I was too impressed. They really struggled with really old (early Eighties) soft and also some Nineties stuff too. Then somebody pointed me to CpuSpd, a modern, free utility by some Vogons dude. It's rather powerful and I think it trumps the competition. So far I saw it can handle even the proto GW Basic games from 1982. But only just! So I'm wondering if that 2.4Ghz wouldn't be a threshold for slowing (unless it works in some other way).

You can now use Reshade to inject Retroarch shaders into any emulator using this pack: GitHub - Matsilagi/RSRetroArch: (Curated) Repository of RetroArch and related ports for ReShade

I like old PCs, but had to compromise due to lack of space and funds, so only have a non-period Pentium 4 + a few VGA monitors, with dual boot of 98SE and XP. This setup covers all the bases: from very early DOS (when slowed down) to Win games from the start of the 00s.
If I could get one classic PC it'd be probably something from the beginning (1982-84), seeing as some games from this period crash on my machine.

lmfao.
They don't seem restricted when dropping the mail on the ground and not picking it up, they don't seem restricted when throwing the packages 30 feet to a porch or up the steps they don't want to walk up, they don't seem restricted when throwing away the mail or packages, they seem to enjoy sleeping in their air conditioned postal vehicle though... I wonder what restrictions and resources are being denied them at this very basic level.
The above description is so clueless that it's clear that you have never held a menial job. And if you did, you got your mind poisoned by divisive garbage from the usual suspects. There is no other explanation for so much hate for fellow blue collar workers.
I don't live in the US and have never used USPS but I'm 99% sure that most of these accusations are vastly exaggerated. That's because they follow the same pattern certain people employ when whining about government services anywhere you go in the world. It's precisely what has helped to drive them to the ground in the UK, as it was observed on the previous page. That does not of course meant there are no bad apples, or logistic problems. But to bring it down to generalizing rants about some lazy tradesmen stereotype is pathetic.
Source: somebody who worked as a courier in UK for better part of a decade and knows this subject inside out. It was a tricky job then, thanks to natural obstacles, exploitative management and customers who'd do anything to unfairly blame the courier for failed delivery. I can't even imagine what's it like now, with that lil' Covid thing going on.

It's a real shame this thread has turned into a postal service bashing exercise. For those yearning for it to fail and be replaced by private companies: be careful what you wish for...

Extreme tweaking might be useful if you plan on using just one console. Otherwise, it's quite probable that the moment you connect some other source it'll require other settings and you'll have to adjust it all over again.
That's why I called it a rabbit hole earlier. I used to agonise about geometry, colour, convergence, etc, until the day when I realised that I spend more time with my nose 5 cm from the screen, chasing some non-existent ideal instead of playing games and enjoying this awesome ancient tech.

Hi @Atarimania I've been browsing the ST section recently and saw that there are a few dumps missing, which are otherwise available elsewhere (TOSEC, etc).
Was just wondering if that's deliberate (not sure what your dump submission rules are) or maybe an omission. I can provide the list and files if necessary. Thanks!

Amazing work on Model II archive, @pski, much appreciated! I'm a great fan of this underappreciated machine, have never seen this resource before.
One way to rustle up a I/III/4 one is to take TOSEC and organize it - get rid of duplicates sort them into a few categories (I have a very old torrent called "TRS-80 collection" which has attempted this to some degree, but it's very outdated). It would be a lot of work though, no doubt. I'm doing similar things in my spare time for some other platforms (eg trying to turn Total Dos Collection into 1G1R), but it's a glacial progress.

It's a pity that some people can't seem to understand that we currently are living in rather difficult times with numerous problems, the least of which is sending parcels across the globe. "Fraud"? Smh.

If MSR was "unplayable" it probably wouldn't get 9/10 from Edge and a bunch of others.
