HSC15 Round 17: Starquake Pong Bertyx
youxia replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
As awesome as the last round was, this one leaves me totally cold. Think I will just put some token scores up and be done with it. That is, need to figure out how to score in Pong at all -
Ouch. But the "TigerSuperman - good cop / Bubsy3000 - bad cop" act was going on pretty well. Seems a Jaguar(Vision) truly can't change its spots

To achieve 0 or super low latency you'd need a FPGA board or a strong PC combined with a decent panel. That would hike the price very considerably. I think 300$ for a low level arcade unit for somebody who mostly likes the looks and can tolerate reasonable low-keyiness is perhaps acceptable (aka not-too-outrageous). But details like the kerrazy Defender controls, the need to rebuild trackballs or the display glitchin out are not.

Seems the TN Panel Drama has pushed this thread into the B&W discussion template: something is either totally fine or the worst thing since sliced bread. I guess such defensive extremes obfuscate the real valid points which can be found on both sides. Personally I don't have any interest in buying one of these but also do not have a problem with their existence, even at that price point and with lower-quality components. On the other hand, real issues such as shoddy controls or glitching displays (mentioned on previous pages) do need highlighting. @mr_me: latency is a tricky yardstick in such cases since you'd need to conduct some advanced testing to pinpoint it and also people tend to either gloss over it (the owners) or exaggerate it (the naysayers).

RIP, a true legend - not only in the C64 world, he has also wrote heaps of marvelous music for Amstrad/Sinclair machines.

I believe there always will be people who appreciate how fun the old games actually are, gameplay wise. The old aesthetics can also be appreciated. There's no need for nostalgia or any other such crutches I love some old films, music, literature & art even though it was all before my time. It's still great stuff though.

HSC15 Round 16: Hi-Res Games II - The September Tourney

By any means necessary Nah, the man just had too much to process I guess. -
How have early 3D games aged in your opinion?
youxia replied to JaguarVision's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Not just fond memories, some absolutely groundbreaking titles you listed there. Especially Midwinter & Hunter. And if we go even earlier in time, there's stuff like Castle Master series on ZX Spectrum and other micros. Then there was also this brief window of time before 3D accelerators have taken over on PC where people tried new techniques such as voxels. Commanche blew me away. Or MDK from Shiny, it was a technical non-accelerated marvel. But, as I said before, I actually totally dig the early PSX 3D efforts. I've actually just dusted off my Playstation and hooked it up to a huge Trinitron. It amazes me what the devs were able to achieve despite its limited specs. And I quite like that particular "style": low-res, wonky polygons, everything coming apart at seams... And yet games such as Einhander, Covert Ops, Brave Fencer or Driver manage to look awesome (aside from being so much fun gameplay wise). -

Seems you missed my Threshold 65,100 score sir. -
Arcade/MAME HSC 2018 Round 5: Gravitar/Xybots
youxia replied to Leto27's topic in Arcade/MAME High Score Club
Now we're talking! Both are amazing games, pure arcade fun. Gravitar sure is a bit ridiculous when it comes to difficulty. You mean I have 20 secs to shoot the reactor (managed that) AND escape as well? Yeah right Plus, it's a vertical game, so on my CRT quite a pain to display properly. Still, I totally love this Lunar Lander-type games. Might consider remapping the buttons though. Xybots is awesome, like wild mash up of Doom and Berserk...can see getting into it no problem. -
HSC15 Round 16: Hi-Res Games II - The September Tourney

Can't say I'm thrilled about Starquake. Never liked it, even back in the day, plus it's more of an action-adventure than pure hi-score attack. Hopefully there will be some nice bonus game to gloss over it. -
Why did I single out Gex? Because I found it funny. Why did I link to your Gamespot profile at all? Because of course it's not only about Gex - some people might find the similarities with general style, hair splitting, systems "winning", holy grail of sales figures, etc, etc - as compared to other recent sock puppets quite amusing as well. Of course all this could be a cosmic coincidence. Stranger things happened, eh. But I'm sure that once you're ready to reveal your Mega Man/Out Run work all these doubs will be put to rest.

Arcade/MAME HSC 2018 Round 4: Hippodrome / Golden Axe
youxia replied to Leto27's topic in Arcade/MAME High Score Club
Golden Axe - 96.0 Hippodrome - 21,720 Glad this is over, it was quite a slog for me. GA is ok, but bit too slow to play for HS, it takes forever to get to later stages. -

Holy crap, only 3 days to the deadline? Time flies. @trbb: no, I have the Lunar Leeper from Atari Gamebase. Latest score 19,300. Game hangs on the Enter Your Initials screen. -
Suit yourself. Although I agree that the "divisive" posts would actually be just a slight nuisance, a lame attempt at flammery and I would not comment on these past an initial post or two. However, the real issue is that this is likely to be the person who already conducted a nasty campaign against AA and its owner and now is trying to worm its way back into the fold. This is a whole different ballgame and I think it's worth pointing out. I might of course be totally wrong and assorted JaguarVisions/SpikeDantons/Bubsy3000s/etc and the OP here are honest-to-god posters who got caught in a paranoid crossfire. If that's the case they may accept my sincere apologies.

Log entry #3393 So, a change of tactic, it has moved on from starting with divisive, flammable topics and posts to easily digestible and agreeable factoids and polls. The specimen is adapting after several early crude attempts at host infiltration. Its powers of mimicry and camouflage are evolving. The projected time of gestation will now probably be extended from the initial insta-burst to a few days or weeks. Proceed with extreme caution.

"Who goes there?"...I see a new post or thread and I think: is this by another sock puppet? Are we being assimilated? Is everyone Biff yet? Am I?
