  1. Dark Chambers - 332490 (Standard, level Y)

So I saw I'm not ranked in the Standard bracket and thought why not have a quick go, just to scrape a few points. To my great surprise 1hr later I was still playing....might have something to do with my headache mixing quite well with the general dullness of the gameplay :) But, the fact is I really wanted to die, yet the game kept throwing supplies at me. Later on, around Q level it actually got quite interesting and now I regret wasting a lot of stuff and being generally careless because I might have finished it otherwise.

It's also partially fault of the irritating bomb activation system - I wasted 2 or 3 thanks to the double fire-tap when not needed and also wasted lots of energy because of having to hunt for "1" on the keyboard in some supertight timing situations. Y u not SPACE or RETURN, ancient DC devs!? :P

  2. Ha, for sure point' n click (and some text) adventures could warrant their own thread regarding their madcap logic. I've played a helluva lot of them back in the day and don't recall finishing many...

Most of the aforementioned examples might be a bit crazy but are more or less fun still - here's one I absolutely hate: knee-high "walls" as an obstacle. Especially when your character is a super agile ninja-like. It's partially understandable at level boundaries - but sometimes these are found bang in the middle...

Side quest: the Fallout door ridiculousness :)

  3. The distinction is one is profiting the other is not.

Read his post: "You take stuff and profit off it or not and give it away for free without permission, it's theft". Clearly it covers all the bases. It's also quite mindboggling since during teh previous exchange I pictured this individual as somebody who's preaching from a pile of original carts and cds.Wow :) It's like those senators crusading against homosexuals, only to be caught with a rent boy in a cubicle. Amazing, what impossible constructs human mind can conjure. Suffice to say this is the last time I engage in any sort of exchange with Mr Tanooki...

Re: "profiting", yes it's bad, mmmkay, and they shouldn't be doing it, but...oh well. I don't see emuparadise and other lower-key ones making such mad loot from some ads, and server costs can be high too - nevermind the risks. It's a shame. They've been around since forever and provided useful service for the less internet savvy. And the balance between the big boys and such operators has also been kept in reasonable status quo for a loong time. Some of us who have "everything" may say they do not care, but it's just not good, not fair on the newcomers too.

No point in rehashing the old anti-piracy arguments, that leads nowhere fast - but the fact is that without the dirty rotten jolly roger scoundrels this hobby would be dead in the water during the decades when the big players didn't care a jot about retro gaming. It's a thing now, but some will remember the days when only newsgroups and Home Of The Underdogs (hail!x3) and some abandonware rings were the only ones who cared.

And a fun fact for the righteous-minded: Marcin Iwinski, the founder of CD Projekt (gog/The Witcher) started as a pirate, a profiteering one too. I think I actually bought some ZX Spectrum warez off them back in the day :)

  4. You take stuff and profit off it or not and give it away for free without permission, it's theft, and you're asking for it.

Mega is still around. I'm on a couple of those which have full everdrive sized sets of things, problem is you have to get the entire archive as they were kind of built up off of web.archive.org removing their indexes of the smokemonster packs.

I tried to read this in a few possible ways but I still struggle to understand. Now, I'm a known dumdum so perhaps you could clarify things a bit? I mean - these emuparadise guys are spineless thieves (nevermind all the other commies and idiots) but you are okay to leech whatever you please from elsewhere?

    How does this work exactly?

  5. Meanwhile, in China...

AMD has collaborated with hardware manufacturer Zhongshan Subor to create custom console hardware for the Chinese market - and first impressions suggest a hardware specification similar to PlayStation 4 Pro in terms of GPU compute power, but combined with next-gen Ryzen processor architecture. New hardware set for a Chinese launch in the next month actually takes the form of a Windows PC, with a dedicated console using a custom OS due later this year.

But this initial Windows PC release will have a hardware make-up quite unlike any other. The semi-custom silicon takes the form of a fully integrated SoC (system on chip) combining x86 Ryzen processor cores with AMD Radeon graphics - in this case RX Vega technology, with 24 compute units at 1.3GHz for 3.99 teraflops of GPU power. Combining Ryzen and Vega into a single chip is nothing new - AMD has already done it with its excellent 'Raven Ridge' Ryzen 3 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G APU products. However, the Subor project is much more console-like in its core hardware design and it will clearly be more capable.

  6. Actually, the game's not THAT bad except the energy does not drain fast enough when you don't eat.

That, make it a bit faster overall and scratch the idea that even the basic enemies require a few hits to kill. It's not bad indeed but I just don't like to play it for HS since I have to slog through early boring stages first.

I played on advanced but I don't remember which stage I got to....E or F maybe?

  7. I also thought one other reason this game (DC) is not very well suited for HS is because of this spawn point farming possibility. But then...

-we're not Twin Galaxies, just playing for fun right?

-there's some sort of hunger clock built in so you lose health

    -the tedium of it! :)

  8. I wouldn't say call of duty, most fps games have those people that swear like second graders (I know all teh words, but not proper usage)

I would go further and say most online games, like that xckd comic proposes. It's a truism, but, well, a true one. Same with commenting, online dating, what have you. Guess in FPS games the adrenaline build up might be faster and more explosive than in a MMORPG but as we all know these games can also be full of obnoxious twerps.

And I find raging on COD rather boring, it's became the whipping boy of videogaming over the years. But in reality there's nothing especially wrong with this series than with any other long running one. Most their games are at least solid, the endless tweaking of the MP towards monetization just the sign of the times and general malady.

I also don't believe the obnoxiousness is a modern thing - I was a Quake 1/2 fanatic and things could get pretty hairy back then too, only texting takes more time, is nigh on impossible in-game and spamming few "u fag" kinda binds can be easily ignored. Remember the same watching the RTS Starcraft crowd too.

Later on I stopped playing MP altogether, only was addicted to Planetside 2 briefly recently. Then I simply played without the voice chat on. Could be a problem if you're a team-oriented player, but I guess there are some basic text binds for that too.

  9. The most disappointing to me was the 3D sequel, "Fade to Black."

I kind of liked it, maybe even more than Flashback itself, not quite sure why though. Maybe because I have great sentiment for early PSX 3D games? I liked the overall atmosphere too. Fun fact: even though it's by no means my favourite game , the original ended up in my suitcase by a weird string of coincidences and eneded up traveling to the other side of the globe with me.

Another World itself did actually have a direct sequel, called Heart Of The Alien, released for Sega CD, of all platforms. Mr Chahi was not involved though. He himself designded Heart Of Darkness - cool game I meant to play since forever but never got around to. Which reminds me - I do have an active PSX connected atm...

1235430. Advanced level. Thought it may be bit more fun on harder difficulty, but not really. I won't try again, it's just not my cup of tea. Not a totally bad game per se but perhaps not really suited for HS attacks.

Now, Chambers of Zorp, that's the real deal. Love it :) Intense from the get go, simple but clever design, in short - a classic. Got around ~13K atm but will try for more definitely.

  11. 54290. I literally died from tedium, just couldn't go on and did kamikaze things. I'm not sure I have your mental stamina to persevere and get to the more exciting levels (and higher scores). Start missing Computer War :P and also have a strange itch to play Gauntlet now....

How did this get voted in over Alley Cat is beyond me :D

  12. Doom came and conquered, of course, and rightly so, but for me it was Wolfenstein 3D which had a bit more impact in general, what with being my first real FPS. I had to convince my friend's gf, who owned a 286, that it's a good idea to install the thing and let me take over her PC. It was also the sad moment when I understood the glory days of Amiga are over...

Judging by all these recent beyond-silly campaigns, such as the Voltron/Opton/etc or whatever their stupid names I saw in the other thread were, I start thinking maybe an early-code rogue AI is responsible or maybe the people behind the Nigerian Princes wrote a generic script. The spammy non-human language and general vagueness/hopelessness definitely give off such vibes.

  14. Grrrhhh... I'm sulking.

    Computer War - 814 pts

    War Games - 115 270 000 (Skill 5)

Bot these games have proven extremely frustating in the end. WarGames is actually great and I really wanted to get into it, but for some reason playing with my Dualshock 4 is a chore. You need insta-precise responses in this game and struggling to choose the right weapon at the right time drove me mad.

Computer War's missile hunting is also a gameplay example wher I just never really feel in control. Chasing this doggone missile is rather tedious, the turret (?) is unresponsive and also a hit feels like it's down to luck not actuall aiming.

Yeah, I know, need to git gud and all that but not when I'm fighting the control schemes. Looking forward to the next round. Something simple perhaps, where pressing fire results in a shoot or jump action? ;)
