  1. Didn't this thread get locked yesterday?

I guess there's always space for another thread where some folk can tell us how much CRTs suck and how anybody still using them is a stuck up snob.

And yes, RGB is a massive improvement over composite, but if you've only got s-video on your TV it's usually not that big a difference.

This is not really true, at least not on a CRT, though it depends here on personal definition of "massive". For me the difference can be, ahem, "substantial", but not as big as RF vs RGB for example. The point being, is that in the CRT "community" the received wisdom has it that using anything below S-Video is anathema, makes the games totally unplayable and will give you eye cancer or some such. This is just silly, because composite is perfectly functional, as long as you don't obsess over it and keep your nose further than few inches from the TV surface. Sure, it's good to try for the higher options but it's not always possible.

  2. It's almost a month after the campaign ended

Gee, time flies doesn't it? I kinda like how this thread turned out anyway, even in total absence of any real news related to the OP itself. It became kind of sarcastic meta-chat about crowdfunding, food, other tech and life in general :)

  3. The SSI games were my favorite games of all times. I recently managed to load up my party that finished Pool of Radiance, Hilsfar, and Curse of the Azure Bonds on the C64 some 30 years ago using a zoom floppy drive and used the Gold Box Companion to recreate them exactly on the PC version. Their adventure now continues in Secret of the Silver Blades - just with a few decades in between.

Hail a true connoisseur. GoldBox series is my all time c/jRPG favourite. The combat system is unmatched to this day, imo*. Would definitely play something in this vein. I think there's also bigger market for this particular combat style (top down 2D grid with freedom of movement) than the more static one used in Bard's Tale/Wizardry games.

*recommend Knights Of The Chalice for similar experience

  4. I'm glad I was there for the first one, it was really something special...a stab at an "Everything" game we dreamed about as kids. I've never played the sequel though: already moved on from Dreamcast when it was released, and when I had an Xbox I always thought "nah, I will play it one day properly with the save transfer". Suffice to say this never happened.

Did they say anything about some sort of save continuity from part 2 in the newest one?

  5. The C64 Mini itself is not that bad, I guess, if you're into the whole Mini thing. You can connect the keyboard and sideload (though only d64, no tapes? :/) so that's some pluses at least. Not for me though, I'm happy with Vice on the Pi atm, in the future maybe will get the FPGA one.

On the other hand, releasing this instead of the desktop/handheld C64 which the original fundraising was for is quite ridiculous. Spiced up by the fact it's by some of the people who left (but are sort of tangled in) the obnoxious Vega+ campaign.

Most of the backers seem happy though...I guess, I will never understand the mindset of a crowdfunder :ponder:

  6. Can't play it myself atm but the list of improvements in the new update looks impressive, especially the improved gfx and planet surface generator. Though, some are strictly MP related and so of no interest to me.

The lack of MP in the GOG version (which I own) is a bit disappointing in general, as in "it's a inferior platform/second class experience". Word is it was gog who dropped the ball on this, not sure though - must be a client issue or some such.

  7. This isn't the USSA (United Socialist States of America) where everything is freely and evenly distributed to the people. :)

I see no reason to be against Nintendo on this. What would your stance be if you had made a product (not necessarily a game) or had a company that did. Then some douche comes along, steals it, then sells it to make money. Would you be ok with this? Would any of you honestly say they don't give a damn and would do nothing to stop it? You're a socialist, a communist, an idiot, or in denial to be fine with it really.

Funny to see real 'Murica! zeal and ranting against pinkos in this topic. It's quite telling though. And the fact that you also sound like a junior copywriter on that classic "you wouldn't steal a car" ad or those PSAs telling us we'll get viruses from "bad sites" is added comedy value.

I don't give 2 $hits about loveroms or any other dishonest sites of its ilk. Them going down is not the point, the point is that Nintendo moves into next gear with their strongarm tactics and this might start another witchhunt, with other big playas joining in. And next time the casualties may be more significant, such as some decent repositories, emulators or archive.org.

Those who choose to live in a righteous bubble utilising tunnel-vision logic will of course continue to do so, but the rest of us might take note.

  8. Alley Cat was quite possibly the first PC game I've ever played. It was at some computer expo back in the 80s, I managed to dodge the booth girls and sneak in for a quick go . Still love it, it's totally awesome gameplay wise, and cute too.

Wiil also give Deflektor another chance.

  9. The "f]]]" in the headline is a meaningless typo which wasn't supposed to be there at all. It's what happens when you try to eat and type at the same time :/ I don't know how to edit it out, it looks like lame attempt at a swearword, which it isn't.

    https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/07/nintendo-to-rom-sites-forget-cease-and-desist-now-were-suing/

Nintendo is seeking serious money as relief for alleged damages, with the biggest number coming from "$150,000 for the infringement of each Nintendo copyrighted work and up to $2,000,000 for the infringement of each Nintendo trademark."

While I'm one of those infringing scoundrels I've never had a problem with the big companies doing what they're doing as long as it was within some reasonable limit. Occasional C&Ds and such were within this limit. This is a whole differnt ball game though, a totally scorched earth tactic.

It's easy to see that they're riding the high wave of the retro-craze, what with the Mini success and all that. The sad, hypocritical bit is that of course without all the emulators and rom sites that craze would most likely had never happened, since that's what mostly kept the retro gaming hobby alive and popular. It happened before with gog and abandonware sites, but at least they had enough sense (or perhaps not enough legal clout) to cut deals with most of these sites and settle down for links and advertising.

Perhaps the Big N should follow suit, instead of going for a ridiculous, nuclear law-suit, a la music moguls back in the day. And as long as all these games are not available for sale or streaming, this thing will go on anyway.

  10. The VCS is quite awesome when you use this point of view. Lol

In cognitive science, choice-supportive bias or post-purchase rationalization is the tendency to retroactively ascribe positive attributes to an option one has selected

Of course, since nobody has received anything yet, here it's more of post-pre-purchase rationalization - or some such - VCS & crowdfunding in general creating an entirely new psychological phenomenon ;)

  11. Phew...thought I'm not gonna make it but I did manage to recreate my CRT gaming setup just in time, on the other side of the planet :)

WarGames is rather awesome, had a go yesterday and it's quite clever and addictive. The controls suck a bit though, lots of civilians die because of that.

I was wondering which skill level will count for final score, not sure I have time to hammer all of them.

  12. Nice. Starflight is an absolute stone cold classic, one of my all time favourites. Sadly the pinciples behind its design were largerly abandoned - well, the 1st Mass Effect at least tried, the latter ones, not so much.

Don't like much these pre alpha pics, think they should keep it 2D. Good thing that the main designer is still at the helm. Filed under "cautiously optimistic"

  13. I wanted to say something, but...what's the use. "Purists", my ass.

I'll leave you with a purist Picard instead and hit ignore on this self-convincing exercise.

  14. I think I already asked this question before and everyone answered one thing: you should definitely get either a PVM or BVM. After doing some research online, reading a bunch of articles on dedicated websites and watching some YouTube videos, the answer still is "get a PVM or BVM".

No, not everyone :) But yeah, the power of net-based groupthink can seem overwhelming, a sad side-effect of this medium.

Trinitrons are of course very good, but honestly, I suppose any non-HD set from a reputable manufacturer will do the trick. Sanyo, Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC and so on. IMO the differences between them regarding colours and such are minuscule and also often down to personal preference and settings tweaking. For example the RGB Trinitron colour does not look as vibrant as the one you can control on lesser inputs or other sets. It may be more "proper" one, but still. Overall, I don't think it's something worth dwelling on too much because you will just keep getting your head turned instead of enjoying the games.

I'm basically repeating what I said the last time but...yeah. Ask about inputs, S-Video to RGB are preferred but contrary to what most "experts" will say composite is perfectly workable too, it can actually benefit some games. Try to test before you buy if possible. Or, just gamble if the price/effort is low. Most of all, have fun and do not read/think about tech specs too much! :)

I've just moved to another country for a few months, I put an ad up, and within a week I got 2 Trinitrons (29"/21"), delivered to my 1st floor flat :) for about 20$ and an offer for another 24" one (considering getting it and putting in storage). It's all still possible, but not for many more years, so...

  15. There's no emulation rig like the one you build and configure yourself.

Yeah, sure but I still believe there is a market for a properly executed pre-made one. So far, all the attempt have fallen flat, not helped by the makers unrealistic promises, overreaching and some downright hubris, like in this case.

  16. I showed off my 87 Panasonic Color Pilot tv which is still my main tv but here is my other TVs Ive collected, they are all from the 1980s and work great. Ignore the horable Berzerk score, I was trying a The Boss joystick and had a bad game but I thought the pitiful score was amusing tho lol.

Looking good. It always puzzles me when some folk turn up their noses and say how "ugly" CRTs are, design wise. Admittedly the latest sets from the 2000s, especially the plasticky, silvery ones are rather bland, but the older ones can be quite beautiful, in an electro-punk kind of way.
